Overview

Gradescope is an assessment and grading platform for instructors handling work online or in class. It is best suited to courses that combine written assessments, problem sets or programming work and need structured feedback across many submissions. Its broad assessment toolkit is a strong draw, but the split between Basic and Institutional features matters: the free plan is not a route to every assignment format or integration.

Key features

Assignment formats and rubrics

Gradescope supports both variable-length work, such as projects and problem sets, and fixed-template worksheets, quizzes, bubble sheets and exams. Flexible rubrics let instructors give detailed feedback, and rubric changes can be applied to work already graded. That is useful when a scoring rule needs adjusting across a batch, rather than correcting submissions one at a time.

Code, analytics and assisted grading

Students can submit code through GitHub or Bitbucket. Instructors can use programming autograders or mark code manually with inline comments; math autograding and written-work OCR are also supported. Per-question and per-rubric statistics help instructors examine results, while grade and data exports support work beyond the platform.

For some question types, Gradescope AI can group similar answers for instructor review. Answer Groups and AI-assisted grading are Institutional features, so instructors who want those workflows should factor in the license rather than assume they are part of the free plan.

LMS workflows and student records

Institutional users can integrate Gradescope with Blackboard, Brightspace (D2L), Canvas, Moodle and Sakai. Without a supported LMS or institutional license, instructors can import course rosters by CSV and download grades as spreadsheets for upload to an LMS. That fallback is workable, but it leaves the transfer steps with the instructor.

Gradescope says it does not claim rights to assignments or rubrics beyond what is needed to display them, and student records can be deleted on request. Turnitin says its safeguards include SSL encryption, redundant servers, firewalls, multiple data centers, and privacy and security audits.

Pricing

Gradescope uses a freemium model. Gradescope Basic costs 0.00 USD per free and includes Basic assignment types, dynamic rubrics, question-by-question grading, assignment statistics, regrade requests, data export and the student mobile app. It is a practical starting point for instructors whose courses fit those assignment types; programming, online and bubble-sheet assignments, LMS integration and other institutional workflows sit outside that package.

Gradescope Institutional has custom pricing. Its features include collaborative grading, AI-powered grading and roster matching, programming, online and bubble-sheet assignments, LMS integration, SSO, an administrator dashboard, and dedicated onboarding and training. Institutions that need these capabilities should weigh the expanded workflow against the need for an institutional arrangement.

An Institutional Trial runs for one term, after which users can continue with the Basic plan for free. The student app is included with Basic, but it does not provide instructor workflows.

Platforms

Gradescope is available on the web and through iOS and Android apps. The mobile app is for students to submit assignments and view grades, not for instructors to manage grading. It requires iOS 13 or later or Android 15 or later.

Who it's for

Gradescope is a good fit for instructors and institutions that handle several kinds of assessments and want rubric-led marking, regrade requests, analytics or code-grading workflows in one platform. It is less compelling for instructors who need mobile grading, or whose priority is an institutional LMS-linked workflow but who do not have access to the Institutional license.

Pros and cons

Pros: Variable-length and fixed-template assessments accommodate courses that mix projects, problem sets and exams.
Pros: Rubric revisions can be applied to already-graded work, helping instructors carry a changed scoring rule across submissions.
Pros: Code submission, autograding, inline comments, analytics and exports cover more than conventional written marking.
Cons: AI-assisted grading, Answer Groups, several assignment formats and LMS integrations require the Institutional license.
Cons: The mobile app serves students only, so instructors need another workflow for grading and course administration.
Cons: Without an institutional integration, roster import and grade transfer rely on CSV and spreadsheet steps.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of Rubric Software or Automated Grading Software, compare the workflows that matter to your course before choosing a platform.

GradeBoard is worth considering for web-based rubric workflows with a free plan capped at 10 learner submissions per month, limited rubric uploads and 30-day data retention; it includes DOCX annotated downloads and basic analytics.
OpenRubric offers a self-hosted and web option, with one event at no cost in exchange for sponsor recognition and permission for an anonymized case study.
UniRubric may suit a lecturer who wants to try one marking job: its free lifetime job includes rubric-anchored output, approval before release and PDF export, with no credit card.
Rubrical is an alternative for readers who want to contact the provider about demos, pricing and pilots.
ComPAIR is a free, self-hosted and web-based alternative.
iRubric is a freemium web-based alternative.
Rubric IQ offers an individual-teacher option starting at 40.00 AUD per once for 40 credits, with no recurring fees and credits that do not expire.
Pawtograder is a free web-based alternative.

Verdict

Choose Gradescope if your teaching needs span different assessment formats and you value rubric-based feedback, exports and code-grading options. Its main limitation is that several of its more advanced formats and institutional workflows depend on the Institutional license; instructors who need mobile grading should look elsewhere.
