Overview

UniTime treats academic scheduling as a shared institutional operation, not just a timetable builder. Course and exam planning, event requests, room sharing, and student placement sit within the same system, which can suit institutions that need departments to coordinate interdependent schedules. It is less compelling for an individual educator seeking a lightweight, standalone timetable.

The system can operate independently or interface with an existing student information system. XML imports and exports cover academic, student, course, and timetable data, with additional RESTful interfaces. That flexibility can help it fit into established institutional workflows, though it also makes deployment and administration part of the decision.

Key features

Course and exam scheduling

Course timetables can account for demand, curricula, historical patterns, faculty and room preferences, and relationships between classes. Automatic timetable creation and room and teacher constraints make UniTime relevant where planners must reconcile many requirements rather than simply assign open periods.

The exam module builds term schedules intended to minimize student conflicts and supports midterm and final exams. Conflict detection is useful for spotting clashes, but the student scheduling module explicitly cannot guarantee that every conflict will be resolved. Institutions should treat automation as planning support, not a promise of conflict-free assignments.

Events and student assignments

Staff and students can request events or search for available times and locations through the web-based Events interface; organizers receive notices. Student scheduling assigns learners to available class spaces using course requirements, historical requests, and timetable information. Together these tools extend UniTime beyond timetable creation into day-to-day coordination, though institutions still need to account for unresolved student conflicts.

Deployment, security, and support

UniTime uses a server-client design with a web interface and platform-independent distributions. Installation documentation covers Linux, Windows, and Mac; administrators can configure SSL access through Tomcat and LDAP authentication integration. Educational institutions can receive a reasonable amount of free email support, usually within a day or two, with additional services available for a fee. This is a capable institutional deployment model, but not a turnkey hosted service.

Pricing

UniTime — 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free open-source software, with commercial support available for a fee. The UniTime 4.x application is distributed under the Apache License, Version 2.0. No seat or usage cap is stated, making the zero license price attractive to institutions that can handle deployment and administration themselves; organizations needing additional support should budget for paid services.

The installation guidance recommends version 4.8 for production because version 4.9 remains in development. That distinction matters: institutions prioritizing production stability should follow the stated recommendation rather than adopt the development version.

Platforms

UniTime supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Its web interface and platform-independent distributions offer deployment flexibility, while the server-client architecture means institutions must plan for installation and operation rather than assume a simple desktop app.

Who it's for

UniTime is best suited to schools, colleges, and universities where multiple university or departmental schedule managers coordinate courses, exams, rooms, and student placements. Institutions with an existing student information system may value its integration and data-exchange options. It is a weaker fit for organizations seeking guaranteed conflict-free student schedules or a managed service without local administration.

Pros and cons

Pros: Course, exam, event, room, and student scheduling in one system can support connected institutional planning.
Pros: Automated timetabling can account for demand, curricula, historical patterns, faculty and room preferences, and class relationships.
Pros: XML exchange, RESTful interfaces, and student information system integration give institutions options for fitting UniTime into existing systems.
Pros: The software has a zero license price and an Apache 2.0 license, with free email support available to educational institutions.
Cons: Student scheduling cannot guarantee that all conflicts will be resolved, so institutions should not treat assignments as assured conflict-free outcomes.
Cons: Production use is directed to version 4.8 while 4.9 remains in development, limiting the case for adopting the newest version in production.
Cons: The server-client model and installation options place deployment and administration responsibilities on the institution.

Alternatives

For focused exam planning, FET is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows with no stated usage limits. SchoolKit Exam Timetable Builder is a web alternative for smaller exam schedules, with its free plan capped at 20 subjects, 10 rooms, and two time slots per day. For a broader school platform, OpenEduCat has a free Community Edition and a 15-day trial that requires no credit card; its platform support includes Android, API, iOS, Linux, and self-hosted.

Institutions considering paid exam or academic scheduling can also compare EMS Academic Scheduling, GNWebSoft Exam Management System, Optime Exam, and Sonet Examination Management System. UniversiTools Schedulers is another paid web option.

Browse Exam Scheduling Software for more exam-focused choices or School Scheduling Software for broader school scheduling options.

Verdict

Choose UniTime if your school, college, or university needs a no-license-cost system spanning academic timetables, exams, events, and student assignments, and can manage its own deployment. Its breadth and integration options are the strongest reasons to adopt it. Look elsewhere if you require guaranteed conflict-free student placement or do not want to administer a server-client system.
