Overview

ERPNext is an open-source ERP built to bring finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing and people operations into one system. It suits organizations that need broad operational coverage and can make use of configurable workflows or self-hosting. Its breadth and deployment flexibility are compelling, but buyers should account for setup and support needs.

Made by ERPNext, founded in 2008 and headquartered in Mumbai, India, the product is positioned for businesses across industries and countries. Hybrid deployment lets an organization run it on its own server or use Frappe Cloud.

Key features

Broad operational coverage

Accounts, invoicing, sales, procurement and stock sit alongside manufacturing, projects, point of sale, HR and payroll. Finance, inventory, order management, manufacturing tools and multi-entity support are included. That range makes ERPNext a credible candidate when several teams need a shared operational system; organizations seeking only a narrow finance or inventory tool may find its scope more than they need.

Customization and global operations

A low-code and no-code builder supports changes to forms, reports, print formats, dashboards and workflows. This gives businesses room to adapt the system without treating every process change as a separate software project, though configuration still needs ownership. Support for subsidiaries, branches and multiple currencies, with consolidated reports and configurable tax compliance, is useful for organizations operating across entities or borders.

Integrations, API and controls

Official integration categories include payment services such as Stripe, Razorpay and Paytm; commerce platforms including Shopify and WooCommerce; storage services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and Amazon S3; and Google services, LDAP and Plaid. Frappe exposes ERPNext DocTypes through REST endpoints for reading, creating, updating and deleting records subject to permissions, giving technical teams a route to connect other systems.

ERPNext and Frappe Framework provide OTP or two-factor authentication, IP restrictions, field-level roles and permissions, and an audit trail. Frappe says its quality and information security systems are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 27001:2013; Frappe Cloud is GDPR compliant. Product Warranty covers Frappe engineer help with bug fixes, not functional support. Frappe also works with a network of more than 200 trained and certified implementation partners, a practical option for organizations that need help with implementation, customizations or integrations.

Pricing

ERPNext is freemium. Self-hosted ERPNext costs 0.00 USD per free, is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and carries no product charge; a separate self-host option is also 0.00 USD per free and includes installation scripts. These options suit teams able to provide their own server and manage deployment. They avoid a product fee, not the work of running the system.

Frappe Cloud Sites starts at 5.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for a single site with managed upgrades and backups on shared-server hosting. The Sites plan is 5.00 USD per month onwards and includes a single site, managed upgrades and backups, scripting and custom apps, Product Warranty, and shared-server hosting. It fits a small deployment that wants managed hosting, but the single-site scope and shared infrastructure are important trade-offs.

Frappe Cloud Servers costs 20.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for virtual machine hosting that supports multiple sites and benches. The separate Servers plan starts at 125.00 USD per month onwards and offers dedicated-server isolation, snapshots, autoscaling, stronger reliability guarantees, global data centre locations and Product Warranty. The first is relevant when multiple sites or benches are needed; the higher starting price is aimed at buyers who want more isolation and hosting features. ERPNext also advertises a 14-day trial.

Platforms

ERPNext supports web access, API use, Linux and macOS, as well as self-hosting. This mix suits organizations that want a browser-based system with the option to manage their own infrastructure or integrate through the API.

Who it's for

ERPNext is a strong fit for small and medium businesses, enterprises and other operators that need several functions in one ERP, especially those with multiple entities or a need to tailor workflows. Freelancers and DIY users are also among its intended audiences, but the breadth of the system is most valuable when there are real processes to coordinate. Buyers who want a managed service should weigh cloud hosting against self-hosting and plan for implementation support if their configuration is complex.

Pros and cons

Broad module set: Finance, inventory, orders, manufacturing, projects, point of sale, HR and payroll can share one ERP environment.
Flexible ownership: AGPL-3.0 self-hosting has no product charge, while Frappe Cloud offers managed hosting choices.
Adaptable and connectable: Builders for forms and workflows, REST API access and a wide range of integration categories help accommodate distinct operations.
Hosting tiers differ substantially: the low-cost Sites option is limited to one site on shared servers, while dedicated isolation and advanced hosting features start with the much higher-priced Servers plan.
Support has boundaries: Product Warranty fixes bugs but does not provide functional support, so implementation partners may matter for process-level help.

Alternatives

Consider Odoo ERP if a freemium web ERP with a one-app free plan and unlimited users is a better starting point; its Standard and Custom plans include all apps, with Custom also offering Odoo Online. Choose Dolibarr for a free ERP available on web, Windows, macOS and Linux. Trimble Viewpoint Vista is an alternative for buyers considering cloud-hosted or on-premises deployment and willing to contact sales for pricing. Apache OFBiz is another free ERP option, available on web and Windows. Axelor Open Suite is worth comparing if a self-hosted, web-based freemium product with a free AGPL community edition fits better. Tryton is a free self-hosted alternative. Comarch ERP Enterprise is a paid web-based option. WP ERP may suit buyers seeking a web-based freemium option with a free plan and paid annual pricing.

Verdict

Choose ERPNext if your business needs a wide-ranging ERP, wants to customize processes, and values the choice between self-hosting and managed cloud hosting. Its chief advantage is the combination of functional breadth and control over deployment; look elsewhere if you need functional support included with bug fixes or a simpler system with less hosting and implementation responsibility.
