Overview

Community combines stateful firewall protection with SSL and IPsec VPN, email and web protection, intrusion prevention, traffic management, and reporting. That breadth is useful when a small environment needs several network functions in one self-hosted system. It is less compelling for organizations that need application-specific policies or to manage multiple installations centrally.

The edition uses an open-source GPL license. Its installation image supports UEFI and legacy boot options, offering flexibility when setting up compatible hardware.

Key features

Firewall controls: Stateful protection and advanced outbound control, with rules in both directions, give administrators control over traffic entering and leaving the network. Application rules are not supported, so it cannot enforce policies based on individual applications.
VPN: SSL and IPsec VPN support covers remote access and connections between locations. This suits households or small teams connecting remote users or sites.
Email and web security: Email protection targets spam, phishing, and other malicious messages; antivirus covers web and email traffic. Community filtering is limited to 1.8 million URLs and uses a single anti-spam engine and a single antivirus engine, which may constrain environments seeking broader filtering or multiple engines.
Intrusion prevention: IPS analyzes traffic flows for internal and external threats, adding a layer of monitoring beyond basic firewall rules.
WAN and traffic management: Multi-WAN can provide failover or simultaneous connections, while QoS can prioritize traffic such as VoIP, web, and email. These controls can help a small network manage connectivity and service priorities.
Reporting: Real-time and historical network traffic reports, plus daily, weekly, and monthly web-usage reports, help administrators review activity over time.
Security inspection: SSL inspection and site-to-site VPN are supported, extending its usefulness for inspecting encrypted traffic and linking locations.

Pricing

Endian Firewall Community — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is an open-source Linux firewall with no professional support, and some reference-manual features are unavailable in the Community Version. It is a sensible fit for home networks, small networks, home labs, and learning or testing environments where users can rely on community resources. The absence of professional support and the edition's feature limits make it a weaker choice where dependable vendor assistance or advanced operational features are essential. There is no free trial; the Community edition itself is free.

Platforms

Endian Community runs on Linux and is self-hosted. The installation image supports both UEFI and legacy boot, so deployment requires suitable hardware or a self-hosted environment rather than a hosted web service.

Who it's for

Choose it for a home or small network, a home lab, or a learning and testing setup that benefits from VPN, traffic controls, security features, and reporting in one system. Look elsewhere if you need application-level rules, high availability, centralized management, or professional support.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad functionality at no software cost: Firewall, VPN, email and web security, IPS, WAN management, QoS, and reporting are included in the free Community edition.
Useful small-network controls: Multi-WAN failover or simultaneous connections, QoS prioritization, and reporting support practical network administration.
Open-source GPL license: The Community edition is suitable for users who specifically want open-source firewall software.

Cons

No application rules: Policies cannot be tailored to individual applications.
No central management or high availability: These missing capabilities limit its fit for managed fleets and deployments that require redundancy.
Constrained security engines and filtering: Community web filtering is capped at 1.8 million URLs, with one anti-spam engine and one antivirus engine.
No professional support: Users are directed to documentation, bug-tracker information, mailing lists, and forums instead.

Verdict

Endian Firewall Community is a strong fit for technically capable users securing a home network, small site, or lab who want a free, open-source system with VPN, security, traffic management, and reporting together. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; seek another option if application-level control, central administration, high availability, or professional support is a requirement.
