Overview

Elasticsearch provides distributed search and analytics, while Kibana supplies dashboards, visualizations, presentations, and deployment management. Elastic Agent, Beats, Logstash, and a web crawler help collect data from applications, infrastructure, and public content. Together, the components support centralized logging, monitoring, security analytics, and broader search needs.

Elasticsearch and Kibana build on an open-source foundation, and Elasticsearch can be downloaded and started for free. Teams can self-manage locally, with Kubernetes, or through custom orchestration, or use Elastic Cloud on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. That range suits organizations with different infrastructure preferences, but makes deployment and cost choices part of the evaluation. Browse our Log Management Software list for more options.

Key features

ELK Stack offers more than log collection: structured parsing, live tailing, pipelines, and archive export sit alongside clustering, high availability, cross-cluster search, vector search, machine learning, graph analytics, and data lifecycle management. This breadth can support teams consolidating search and operational workflows on one platform; it may be more than a logging-only use case requires.

Kibana dashboards help teams inspect and present data. Security capabilities include authentication integrations, role-based access controls, SSL/TLS encryption, IP filtering, audit logging, and field- and document-level controls. Security offerings also include alerting, detection rules, malware prevention, and cloud posture management. Elastic's Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, PCI, HIPAA, ISO 27001, and FedRAMP Moderate and High attestations and certifications.

Elastic offers over 300 turn-key integrations for Search, Security, Observability, and cloud providers. They connect to applications, infrastructure, public content, S3, MySQL, and other systems, reducing the work of assembling data sources. Enterprise adds SAML SSO; community support is available through Slack, GitHub, and other channels.

Pricing

Pricing is freemium, with a free 14-day Elastic Cloud trial and no credit card required. Free access is a practical way to begin with self-managed Elasticsearch, but does not establish the cost of a paid deployment.

Elastic Cloud Serverless is usage-based, with pay-as-you-go monthly or prepaid terms and custom pricing. Its 50 GB monthly data-transfer allowance is free; additional transfer costs $0.05 per GB. Logs Essentials is 0.07 USD per contact, billed Pay for usage, with ingest measured per GB. Complete and Observability Complete are 0.09 USD per contact; Observability Complete is described as starting at $0.09 per GB ingested for logs and traces. Both serverless entries include 50 GB free egress.

Hosted tiers are priced as low as, based on cloud production configuration, with 120 GB storage and two zones: Standard is 99.00 USD per month; Gold is 114.00 USD per month; Platinum is 131.00 USD per month; Enterprise is 184.00 USD per month. Standard is the entry point for hosted production configurations. Gold adds reporting, third-party alerting actions, Watcher, and multi-stack monitoring. Platinum adds advanced security, machine learning, cross-cluster replication, and enhanced support. Enterprise adds searchable snapshots, SAML SSO, Elastic Workflows, AI features, and premium support. Platinum and Enterprise hosted tiers list a 99.95% monthly uptime SLA.

These starting prices are not a fixed bill: instance usage is metered, and hosted charges can also include snapshot storage and data transfer. Serverless charges vary with usage, too. Self-managed paid subscriptions use node count and RAM for licensing and have custom pricing; Gold is discontinued and Platinum is for existing customers only. Compare actual workloads and deployment needs before choosing a tier.

Platforms

ELK Stack supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployments. Elasticsearch downloads include Windows packages, Linux package managers, Docker containers, and installation archives for Linux and macOS. Hosted Elastic Cloud is available on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud; self-managed deployments can run on-premises, public or private cloud, or in hybrid environments.

Who it's for

ELK Stack is a strong fit for organizations centralizing logs or combining search, monitoring, and security analytics, especially those that value deployment flexibility and a broad integration ecosystem. Teams with existing infrastructure expertise can choose self-management; those preferring hosted operation can use Elastic Cloud. A narrower logging need or a strict requirement for predictable hosted bills may favor a more focused alternative.

Pros and cons

Pros: Self-managed free access and hosted or self-managed deployment let teams choose their operating model.
Pros: Search, analytics, dashboards, ingestion, and security features span more than basic log storage.
Pros: Over 300 integrations and support for common sources such as S3 and MySQL help connect varied systems.
Cons: Hosted pricing depends on configuration and can add snapshot and data-transfer costs, making the starting monthly rates an incomplete budget.
Cons: Usage-based serverless costs depend on ingest and transfer, so they may be less predictable for variable workloads.
Cons: The breadth of deployment and capabilities may be unnecessary for teams seeking only a simple logging service.

Alternatives

Amazon CloudWatch Logs is worth considering for readers who want a paid log service with a free plan and published ingestion pricing; its stated rate is 0.50 USD per month for the first 10 TB in US East (N. Virginia), with rates varying by region and tier.

Sumo Logic is another freemium option with a free plan offering 20 daily credits for logs, metrics, and traces, seven-day log retention, and up to three users. That cap may suit a small team evaluating a hosted alternative.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Logging offers a free allowance of 10 GB log storage per month and usage pricing at 0.05 USD per month. It may suit readers comparing storage-based pricing.

Kiwi Syslog Server has a self-hosted free edition capped at five network devices, a 500-message buffer, and 10 display windows; consider it when those limits fit a focused syslog need.

Logmanager offers a free plan with no time limit, 100 GB storage, and unlimited users. That defined storage allowance may appeal to teams seeking a bounded free option.

OpenObserve has a free plan with 200 GB per day ingestion and 15-day retention, while its enterprise plan offers custom capacity and retention with commercial support. Consider it when those stated limits and terms suit the workload.

NXLog offers a free plan for 10 sources and supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and web platforms; it may suit readers seeking a source-capped alternative with broad platform coverage.

Grafana Cloud Application Observability has an always-free plan with 2,232 host hours and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and web. It is an option for readers whose application observability needs fit that allowance.

Verdict

Choose ELK Stack if your team needs a flexible platform that brings data ingestion, search, analytics, and visualization together, with the option to self-manage or use Elastic Cloud. Its broad capabilities and integrations are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a narrowly focused log tool or a more predictable hosted bill, since configuration, usage, snapshots, and transfer can all affect costs.
