Overview

Waterfox’s strongest case is the combination of default protections and the ability to tune them. On desktop it blocks ads, trackers, pop-ups and overlays, with configurable filter lists and site exceptions. That flexibility is useful when a site needs an exception, but the described built-in blocking applies to desktop; readers should not assume the same blocking on Android.

Waterfox encrypts DNS lookups and routes them through an Oblivious HTTP relay, separating the user’s identity from the query. Its default setup uses a Fastly-operated relay and Cloudflare-operated resolver, and users can change or disable it. Private tabs use a separate container, with site data cleared when the last private tab closes. Waterfox says telemetry, health reports and crash reports are disabled and locked off at build time.

Key features

Tabs, extensions and sync

Tree tabs nest pages beneath the page that opened them; users can collapse or move a whole branch. This is more useful for research or browsing sessions that branch into several pages than for readers who prefer a flat tab strip. Gecko supports Firefox WebExtensions, but Chrome-only extensions do not transfer automatically, so switching from a Chrome-based setup may mean giving up add-ons.

Sync remains off until the user signs in with a Mozilla account. Once enabled, synced data is end-to-end encrypted. This keeps synchronization optional, though users who want it must use a Mozilla account rather than enable it anonymously.

Pricing

The Waterfox browser costs 0.00 USD per free, with no premium tier or payment required. It is a straightforward choice for anyone seeking the browser’s features without a subscription.

Waterfox Private Search costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $5 a month, after a 3-day free trial. It includes unlimited web, image, video and news searches and can be set as the browser’s default search engine. This is a separate paid service, not a paid browser tier, and makes sense for users who specifically want Waterfox’s search service; others can use the free browser without it.

Platforms

Waterfox is available on Android, Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as an extension. The Gecko engine and Firefox WebExtensions support are central to its compatibility story; Chrome-only extensions require a different choice or a replacement.

Who it's for

Waterfox suits users who want configurable desktop blocking, encrypted DNS and private-tab data clearing without paying for the browser. Its tree tabs may also suit people who organize browsing around related branches of pages. It is less compelling for Chrome-only extension users, or for anyone who expects the desktop blocking behavior to apply equally on mobile.

Pros and cons

Pros: Desktop blocking covers ads, trackers, pop-ups and overlays, with filters and per-site exceptions to adjust it.
Pros: Encrypted DNS uses an Oblivious HTTP relay, and users can change or disable the default providers.
Pros: Private-tab site data clears when the last private tab closes; telemetry, health reports and crash reports are disabled at build time.
Cons: Chrome-only extensions do not transfer automatically, which can make migration inconvenient.
Cons: Sync requires signing in with a Mozilla account, and built-in blocking is described for desktop rather than Android.
Cons: Private Search is a separate $5-a-month service after a 3-day trial, so users wanting that search offering face a recurring charge.

Verdict

Waterfox is a strong fit for privacy-minded users who want tunable desktop blocking, encrypted DNS and private-tab cleanup at no browser cost. Its main drawback is compatibility: Firefox WebExtensions work, but Chrome-only add-ons do not move across automatically. Choose it for those controls and the open-source, free browser; look elsewhere if your existing Chrome extensions are essential or you need verified parity for mobile blocking.
