Overview

The curriculum uses complex, grade-level texts by diverse authors alongside science and social studies learning. That pairing gives reading and writing a substantive knowledge base, rather than treating literacy as a set of isolated exercises. Original research and interdisciplinary investigations extend the work into inquiry, analysis, critical thinking, and craftsmanship; schools seeking a knowledge-building approach to language arts have a coherent fit.

Its design draws on the science of reading and the science of learning and development. It also connects learning to students’ communities, encouraging compassionate leadership and thoughtful citizenship. These aims broaden the curriculum beyond academic skills, though educators should expect to make choices about which materials and opportunities best fit their students.

Key features

Grade-level texts and knowledge building: Diverse texts are paired with science and social studies content. This is useful for educators who want literacy lessons to develop background knowledge as well as reading skills.
Inquiry across subjects: Research and interdisciplinary investigations give students opportunities to analyze questions and produce considered work. This can support a more active approach to learning than text study alone.
Inclusive and differentiated opportunities: The curriculum is designed to include English language learners, economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, and advanced learners. That breadth is relevant to varied classrooms, although the curriculum does not eliminate the need for teacher judgment in adapting instruction.
Downloadable teacher and student materials: Grade-level index pages link to Teacher’s Guide PDFs and Teacher Supporting Materials or Student Workbook Word documents. Educators can work with downloadable materials, while some resources require an account.
Coaching and planning: EL Education offers aligned coaching and strategic planning for guided curriculum pilots, which may help schools considering a structured adoption.
Built-in assessments and teacher tools: Both are part of the curriculum, adding instructional support beyond the core text materials.

Pricing

EL Education Language Arts Curriculum digital resources: free. The plan includes hundreds of free resources, with an account required for some. This is the natural starting point for educators who need curriculum materials without a software subscription cost.

K-5 Language Arts Curriculum 2025 Edition professional learning course: 350.00 USD per once. The self-paced course costs $350, provides 365-day access, and takes 2–6 hours. Purchase orders require a minimum of 4 licenses. It suits teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders seeking course-based professional learning, but it is an added expense rather than a requirement for accessing the free curriculum resources.

Grade 5 required and recommended texts include a “Texts to Buy” section; those materials must be procured. That is a separate practical consideration for schools planning to use the Grade 5 materials.

Platforms

The curriculum is available on the web. Its downloadable PDFs and Word documents can also be used outside the curriculum index pages, while account access is needed for some resources.

Who it's for

Teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders are the intended audience for the 2025 K–5 curriculum course. More broadly, the K–8 scope and standards alignment suit schools building a language arts program around grade-level texts, cross-subject knowledge, and differentiated opportunities. It is less compelling for schools seeking a single-subject reading resource without inquiry or broader knowledge-building work.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free core digital resources: Hundreds of resources are available at no charge, making the curriculum accessible to educators who can work within its account requirements.
Literacy tied to subject knowledge: Science and social studies content gives reading and writing a broader instructional context.
Multiple kinds of support: Teacher tools, built-in assessments, downloadable materials, and optional coaching and strategic planning support use beyond the student-facing lessons.
Explicit attention to varied learners: Differentiated and inclusive opportunities address several learner groups rather than assuming a uniform classroom.

Cons

Some resources require an account: Users cannot assume every free resource is available without registration.
Grade 5 texts may need procurement: Materials in the “Texts to Buy” section must be obtained separately.
Professional learning has a separate fee: The $350 course is not included with the free digital resources, and purchase orders have a four-license minimum.
Web platform: The curriculum is web-based, so it is not suited to schools looking specifically for a dedicated mobile app.

Alternatives

K-12 Curriculum Platforms is a useful place to compare broader curriculum options. Choose MobyMax if you want a freemium option available on Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows; its free educator version has limited access compared with licensed features.

Khan Academy may fit U.S. schools and districts seeking an enterprise option priced at $10/student/year for 1,000 or fewer student licenses. For a free, customizable online textbook whose content varies by subject and book, consider CK-12 FlexBook 2.0.

Amplify Classroom is worth considering for individual educators who want free interactive K–12 math, literacy, and science lessons, a Teacher Dashboard, Polypad virtual manipulatives, and partial content customization. Eureka Math offers free PreK–12 PDF curriculum with Student and Teacher Editions, curriculum maps, and overviews, making it the more relevant choice for schools focused on mathematics.

Choose Illustrative Mathematics for a full TK–12 math curriculum online at no cost, with downloadable and printable teacher and student PDFs and no time limit. Oak National Academy is another free option, with no paywalls, package tiers, or hidden costs. For science curriculum, OpenSciEd offers resources free to download, with registration required for educators or parents.

Verdict

EL Education Curriculum is a strong choice for K–8 educators and school teams who want language arts grounded in grade-level texts, subject knowledge, inquiry, and inclusive opportunities. Its free digital resources make it practical to explore, and the downloadable materials and teacher supports add substance. Look elsewhere if your priority is a mobile app, a narrower reading-only program, or avoiding account access and separate procurement of Grade 5 texts; budget separately if the paid professional learning course is part of your plan.
