Overview

Lark’s appeal is breadth: teams can communicate, schedule work, create documents, and store files in the same environment. Meetings have a practical collaboration feature, letting participants edit shared Docs without leaving the video call. That makes Lark a stronger fit for teams coordinating around shared work than for organizations seeking chat alone.

Its scope extends beyond core collaboration. AnyCross offers drag-and-drop workflow automation and integrations, while the App Directory covers third-party tools for functions such as recruitment, expense control, CRM, and ERP. The Open Platform adds custom bots, web apps, blocks, and more than 2,500 APIs. These capabilities give teams room to connect processes, though they matter most to organizations prepared to make use of that breadth.

Key features

Communication and collaboration

Lark combines chat, calendars, document creation, and cloud storage. Shared-document editing during meetings can keep discussion and the work being discussed together. The Starter plan has one-on-one video meetings, however, so teams needing group calls must look at higher tiers.

Automation and extensibility

AnyCross pairs visual workflow building with integrations and ready-to-use solutions. The App Directory spans collaboration and business systems, and the developer platform offers more than 2,500 APIs alongside custom bots, web apps, and blocks. This is a meaningful advantage for teams connecting Lark to broader workflows; those wanting only basic messaging may not need the added scope.

Translation, security, and support

Starter includes unlimited real-time translation, useful for teams working across languages. Lark says it uses industry-standard encryption and continuous system monitoring, and that employees do not have access to user data by default. Its stated compliance systems cover EU GDPR, US CCPA/CPRA, Japan APPI, and Singapore PDPA. Help-desk email support is available on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Singapore Time, with an intended initial response within one business day.

Pricing

Lark has a free Starter plan, but prices for the paid plans are custom pricing. The plan differences are consequential: user caps, storage, message history, meeting capacity, and monthly automation quotas all change by tier.

Plan	Limits and inclusions	Best fit
Starter	20 users, 100 GB storage, 18 months of message history, 1,000 automations per month, and one-on-one video meetings	Small teams with simple communication needs
Basic	500 users, 5 TB storage, unlimited message history, and 1,000 automations per month	Teams needing greater scale, storage, and persistent history without a larger automation quota
Pro	500 users, 15 TB storage, meetings for up to 500 participants, and 50,000 automations per month	Organizations with larger meetings or substantial automation needs
Enterprise	Unlimited users, 15 TB plus 30 GB per user, meetings for up to 500 participants, and 500,000 automations per month	Large companies with advanced security and organizational management needs

Starter is generous in translation and its included toolset, but the 20-user ceiling, 100 GB storage cap, 18-month history, and one-to-one calls constrain its use as a growing team hub. Basic removes the history limit and raises capacity sharply, but keeps the same 1,000 monthly automations as Starter. Pro and Enterprise are the relevant tiers for teams whose workflows need more automation or whose meetings exceed one-on-one calls; Enterprise also removes the user cap.

Platforms

Lark supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, giving teams desktop and mobile access across major operating systems. Its platform list also includes an API, which suits teams looking to build integrations rather than rely only on ready-made tools.

Who it's for

Lark is a strong candidate for teams that want messaging, meetings, documents, calendars, and cloud storage together, especially when translation, workflow automation, or custom integrations are part of the job. Starter suits small teams with straightforward communication needs. Larger organizations should compare the paid tiers against their required meeting size, storage, user count, and automation volume. Teams that need only a focused knowledge base or wiki may be better served by a more specialized option.

Pros and cons

Pro: Chat, calendars, documents, and storage share one platform, with shared Docs editable during meetings.
Pro: AnyCross, a broad app directory, and an Open Platform with more than 2,500 APIs support workflow connections and customization.
Pro: Starter includes unlimited real-time translation, while the supported desktop and mobile platforms cover major operating systems.
Con: Starter is capped at 20 users, 100 GB, 18 months of message history, and one-on-one meetings, limiting its headroom for expanding teams.
Con: Basic retains Starter's 1,000-automation monthly limit, so teams needing much more automation must move to Pro or Enterprise.
Con: Paid-plan pricing is custom, making cost comparison less direct.

Alternatives

For a narrower knowledge-management need, Nuclino has a free plan capped at 50 items, three canvases, and 2 GB of storage. ProProfs Knowledge Base offers a free plan with one author and up to 25 pages. Confluence is worth considering for a small wiki-oriented team: its free plan covers 10 users, 2 GB of file storage, and three active whiteboards per user.

MediaWiki is free, self-hosted software under GNU GPL version 2 or later, a fit for teams that want that deployment model. Scribe offers a free Basic plan that works with any web app and supports quick customization and shareable links or embeds. Stonly has a Basic plan with 400 guide views per month, five published guides, one language, and one team member. TiddlyWiki is another free option. Wiki.js is free, AGPL-licensed, and self-hosted.

Verdict

Choose Lark if your team wants one workplace platform that reaches from chat and shared documents into meetings, automation, and custom integrations. Its broad feature set and cross-platform support are the case for it; the main reasons to look elsewhere are Starter’s tight capacity limits and the need to get custom pricing for paid tiers.
