Overview

The catalog spans individual courses, professional certificates, executive education, microcredentials, and degrees, drawing on edX, universities, and other institutions and partners. Learners can explore more than 3,500 courses. Courses mix video and text lessons with discussion forums, problems, and assessments; many are self-paced and individual courses generally take two to six weeks, though some have deadlines. Programs also include flexible, hybrid, and fully online formats.

For an individual learner, the key decision is whether exploration is enough or whether graded work, a certificate, and continuing access matter. Auditing offers a no-cost way to sample a course, but limits content and ends access when the course ends. Verified study adds assignments and a certificate, with continuing access to lectures, readings, and lessons.

Key features

Credentials at different levels: Standalone courses sit alongside professional certificates, executive education, microcredentials, and degrees. This gives learners room to pursue a short subject course or a longer credential without treating every option as the same commitment.
Verified certificates: The university or organization offering a course issues its verified certificate, which carries a link employers can check. That makes verified study more relevant to learners who want a credential they can share than an audit alone.
Mobile learning with a boundary: The free app supports enrollment, most assignments, video, handouts, announcements, discussions, and offline video downloads. Timed or proctored exams cannot be taken in the app, so learners whose courses require those assessments will need another way to complete them.
Institutional learning tools: Business and higher-education offerings include LMS and custom-platform integrations, SSO, grade pass-back, analytics, portals, and administrative tools. Enterprise plans add services such as dedicated support and tailored integrations, making edX more suitable for organizations that need learning administration than for a team seeking only a simple course list.
Accessibility commitment: edX aims to conform its website and course authoring tools to WCAG 2.1 AA and requires timed captions for course videos.

Pricing

edX is freemium, but the right price comparison depends on whether the learner wants one course, a credential, or access for a group. Prices for paid courses and programs are starting points, not a single subscription price for the whole catalog.

Audit track — 0.00 USD per free: Course access for exploration, with limited content, no graded assignments, and no certificate. Auditors lose course-material access when the course ends, so this suits sampling rather than retaining a course for later review.
Verified track — price not listed; starting at around $50: Adds unlimited access to course content, graded assignments, and a verified certificate. Verified learners can keep lectures, readings, and lessons after the course ends. Individual verified courses start at around $50, so this is the more appropriate route when assessment and proof of completion justify the cost.
Professional Certificate Programs — 500.00 USD per once: Multi-course programs start at $500, a larger commitment for learners seeking a sequence of courses rather than a single class.
Executive Education Programs — 2500.00 USD per once: Executive programs start at $2,500, positioning them for learners pursuing executive education rather than low-cost course exploration.
Starter — 349.00 USD per year: Per learner, per year, for a classroom or department, with unlimited catalog access and tools. It is aimed at organized group learning rather than an individual purchase.
Campus Plan — custom pricing: Institution-wide learning access with extended services and features; suited to institutions that need broader deployment.
Essentials — 150.00 USD per year: $150 per user, per year for one academy and 16 self-paced courses. Its defined catalog is a fit for users who do not need the broader Teams selection.
Teams — 396.00 USD per year: $396 per user, per year for eight academies, 2,300+ self-paced courses, and 300+ professional certificates. A 14 day free trial gives teams a chance to assess this broader catalog before committing.
Enterprise — custom pricing: For 50+ learners, with eight academies, 2,300+ self-paced courses, and 300+ professional certificates. This is the group option for larger deployments; enterprise services include advanced analytics, dedicated support, and tailored integrations.

Course deadlines may apply even when a course is largely self-paced. Verified learners retain materials after the course ends, but auditing does not. Those limits matter if a learner expects to revisit lessons or needs to complete assessed work.

Platforms

edX is available on web, Android, and iOS. The mobile app supports offline video downloads, but not timed or proctored exams. edX for Business supports SAML 2.0 single sign-on and an Enterprise API that returns course data in JSON or XML; its listed integrations include Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Workday, and LinkedIn Learning Hub, among others.

Who it's for

edX suits learners who want university-backed courses and a choice between informal exploration and a certificate-bearing path. It is particularly useful when a learner values verified course completion or needs to progress from individual courses into certificates or executive education. Organizations and higher-education institutions can also consider it for catalog access, learning administration, integrations, and employee development. It is a weaker fit for someone who only wants an unrestricted free course archive: the audit track excludes graded work and a certificate, and course materials disappear after the course ends.

Pros and cons

Pro: A broad catalog covers short courses through degrees and executive education, giving learners multiple levels of commitment within one provider.
Pro: Verified study combines graded assignments, a verifiable certificate, and continuing access to course lessons, which is a meaningful upgrade over auditing for credential-seekers.
Pro: Mobile support includes most assignments and offline video downloads, useful for learning away from a desktop when exams are not involved.
Con: Free auditing omits graded work and certificates and does not preserve materials after the course ends, limiting its usefulness for formal progress or later review.
Con: Verified courses start around $50, while professional certificates start around $500 and executive education can cost at least $2,500; learners should match the spend to the credential or program they need.
Con: Timed and proctored exams are unavailable in the mobile app, which can interrupt an otherwise mobile-first study routine.

Verdict

Choose edX if you want university-backed learning with a clear path from a free audit to a verified certificate or a longer program, or if your organization needs course access with learning tools and integrations. Look elsewhere if your priority is keeping free course materials, earning a certificate without paying, or taking every exam on a phone: edX's audit limits, paid credential costs, and mobile exam restriction are substantial considerations.
