Overview

Duolingo is a learning app for people who want to study a language in short sessions, with chess and math as additional subjects. It suits independent learners who value varied practice and prompts to keep a routine; its main trade-off is a free plan whose limits are not defined here.

Language study spans 40 listed languages and covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The format is designed to build real-world communication skills, but Duolingo’s claims about research-backed teaching do not establish a particular outcome for an individual learner.

Key features

Language, chess, and math: The mix gives curious learners more than a language course, though those choosing Duolingo specifically for language study may find the extra subjects beside the point.
Adaptive lessons and review: Lessons adjust to a learner’s level and pace, with placement tests and personalized review to help guide practice. This is useful for self-directed study, but it does not replace a stated personal tutor or instructor.
Four language skills and speech practice: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are all covered, with speech practice providing a way to work on spoken language as well as comprehension.
Short lessons and motivation features: Bite-sized lessons, game-like features, challenges, and reminders are suited to learners fitting practice around other commitments. The emphasis on prompts and game mechanics may be less appealing to readers who prefer a more formal course structure.
Offline lessons: Offline study is supported, a practical advantage when a learner cannot rely on a connection.
English test: The Duolingo English Test is described as AI-enabled and usable wherever and whenever a test taker performs best. It is a separate offering from the learning lessons.

Duolingo also lists offerings for schools and businesses, plus subscriptions named Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max. FAQs and status information are available for support.

Pricing

Duolingo uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, making it a straightforward starting point for learners who want to try the app without a paid commitment. The free-plan caps and any differences in features from paid subscriptions are not established here, so learners who need a particular allowance or feature should not assume it is included.

A Free trial is shown as 1 week, but no price is given for it. The broader pricing note says 14-day trial, so the trial length is inconsistent; check the terms before relying on a trial period. Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max are named subscription products, but no prices, included features, seat counts, renewal terms, or quotas are stated. Duolingo for Business is also listed, with custom pricing.

Platforms

Duolingo is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web, with cloud and mobile deployment. Its mobile apps are available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Offline lessons broaden its usefulness for mobile learners, though the offline scope is not defined.

Who it's for

Choose Duolingo if you want flexible, self-paced language practice across the core skills, a choice of 40 languages, and short lessons supported by adaptive pacing and reminders. It also makes sense for learners who want chess or math content in the same learning service. Look elsewhere if you need clearly stated free-plan limits, transparent subscription terms, or a quantified learning outcome before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad language choice: 40 listed languages give learners a wide range of starting points.
Practice across four skills: Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are covered, alongside speech practice.
Flexible study: Bite-sized lessons, adaptive pacing, and offline support suit practice around a learner’s schedule.
Free entry point: The 0.00 USD per free plan lets learners begin without paying.

Cons

Unclear trial terms: The trial is described as both 1 week and 14 days, and no trial price is given.
Effectiveness is not quantified: The company says its methods are research-backed, but no specific learning outcome is established.

Alternatives

Memrise is another freemium language-learning option, with a Monthly plan at 21.99 EUR per month and an Annual plan at 69.99 EUR per year. Pick it when you want a paid language-learning plan with prices stated in euros; Duolingo is the better fit if chess and math alongside language lessons matter.
Gametize is a freemium option with Android, iOS, API, self-hosted, and web platforms. Its Basic plan is 0.00 USD per free for up to 10 players. Consider it instead if you are looking for a player-based gamification offering rather than language courses.
Kahoot! 360 offers a free plan and paid plans, including Kahoot! 360 Pro Start at 19.00 USD per month, billed $228 billed annually, for up to 50 participants, polls and quizzes, and AI presentation creation. Choose it when participant activities and presentation tools matter more than personal language study.
Khan Academy is a freemium learning service with Android, iOS, and web platforms. It may suit readers looking for a different learning service; the plan details available for comparison include Enterprise Starter at 10.00 USD per year for 1,000 or fewer U.S. school and district student licenses.

Browse Language learning apps for more options, or compare Learning Gamification Software if the game-like approach is the priority.

Verdict

Duolingo is a strong fit for independent learners who want flexible, bite-sized practice across a broad range of languages, with adaptive lessons and offline support. Its free plan makes it easy to start, but unclear plan limits and inconsistent trial length make it a weaker choice for anyone who needs predictable subscription terms or a defined learning result.
