Overview

Essay is a writing workspace for shaping projects from early planning through revision and sharing. It suits writers managing research-heavy or developing work; occasional writers may find its free allowance restrictive. Its strongest case is the way it connects notes, drafts, feedback, and academic references.

Outlines and linked research notes help organize a piece before drafting, while rewriting and reordering tools support revision. Writers can share work with friends, teachers, or peers and use feedback categories to guide responses. The workflow can serve creative writing and proposals as well as dissertations and research papers.

Key features

Planning and drafting: Outlines provide structure before writing, and a distraction-free drafting environment keeps attention on composition.
Research and revision: Notes can be organized and connected to an essay or outline. Rewriting and reordering tools help reshape drafts, making the combination more useful for ongoing projects than a one-off text generator.
Feedback: Sharing and review categories can make responses more focused, but this part of the workflow depends on having people available to read the work.
Academic writing: Citation and reference management, bibliography formatting, and academic exports support scholarly work. Pro adds Zotero integration for syncing references.
Exports: The plans page lists PDF, Word, Docs, and Markdown exports, providing several ways to move finished work into other formats.

Pricing

Essay has a free tier and two paid plans. Free costs 0.00 USD per free (billed $0) and caps use at 3 essays, 5,000 words, and 12 notes; it also includes 10 personalized topic recommendations. Those limits make it a way to try the workflow or manage a small project, not a comfortable home for multiple substantial essays.

Core costs 8.00 USD per month (billed $96 billed annually). It removes essay, word-count, and note limits and includes writing and feedback tools, document import, and exports. Core is aimed at everyday writers who need room for ongoing work but do not need the academic citation and reference features in Pro.

Pro costs 12.00 USD per month (billed $145 billed annually). It also offers unlimited essays, words, and notes, adding citations and footnotes, reference management, Zotero integration, and academic export. That makes it the better fit for academics and researchers; writers who do not need those tools can save by choosing Core. Both paid prices are stated with annual billing, so the annual totals matter when comparing them with a monthly budget.

Platforms

Essay is available on iOS and the web. Its roadmap lists a native Android app as planned, so Android users should not count on a native app today. Working offline is listed as a live feature. The privacy policy says personal information is collected and used with consent to provide services, identifies PIPEDA and the Canadian Standards Association Model Code as its basis, and describes safeguards, audits, and investigations to monitor privacy compliance.

Who it's for

Essay is best suited to writers who want planning, research notes, drafting, revision, and feedback in one process. Core fits everyday writing; Pro is more compelling for researchers who need citation and reference management or Zotero syncing. Writers who need only a narrowly focused citation tool, or who rely on Android, may be better served elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Notes connect to essays and outlines, keeping research close to the work it informs.
Pro: Feedback categories and sharing support a review loop with peers, teachers, or friends.
Pro: Pro combines reference management, academic exports, and Zotero integration for research workflows.
Con: Free allows only 3 essays and 5,000 words, which limits its usefulness for sustained writing.
Con: The native platform footprint is iOS and web; Android is only planned.
Con: Annual billing is attached to the stated paid-plan totals, which may not suit writers avoiding an annual commitment.

Alternatives

Jenni AI is an alternative if its free plan's daily autocomplete, PDF upload, editing, chat, review, and page allowances better match your needs.
SciSpace is worth comparing if you prefer a credit-based plan, with 100 monthly credits on Basic and 1,200 monthly credits on Premium.
Aithor may suit writers seeking content generation and AI editing, with a free tier that also includes humanizer, detector, and paraphraser tools.
Conch AI Citation Generator is a more focused option for free APA, MLA, or Chicago citations for websites, books, and academic journals.
EssayBot is an alternative if a free starter plan limited to one paper with sources, an AI detection score, and citations is sufficient.
EssayGenius may fit writers who want unlimited essays on its free tier, alongside monthly AI-message and inline-suggestion limits.
Kahubi is an alternative if its free allowance of AI messages, projects, library papers, and drafts aligns better with your workflow.
Paperpal is another option for research and writing needs, with Prime and Pro plans.

Verdict

Choose Essay if you want a connected workspace for planning, notes, drafting, feedback, and academic references, especially for work that develops over time. Pro's citation tools and Zotero integration give researchers the clearest reason to pay; Core is the more sensible paid choice for everyday writing. Look elsewhere if the free essay and word caps are too tight, or if you need a native Android app.
