Overview

Mod Organizer 2 is a free, open-source mod manager for Windows players who like to experiment with supported PC games. Its virtual deployment and separate profiles make it a compelling way to keep mod setups organized, but Windows Store and Game Pass installations are out of reach.

Key features

Profiles and virtual deployment

MO2 supports mod profiles and virtual deployment, so users can manage distinct setups without deploying mods directly into a game's files. Conflict detection adds a useful check when collections overlap. The tool is designed for collections of arbitrary size, which suits ongoing experimentation better than a small, one-off set of changes.

Installing mods and finding games

MO2 provides installation and removal of mods, with built-in access to mod sources. Its basic games plugin detects installations from Steam, GOG, Origin, Epic Games or Legendary, and EA Desktop. A mod data checker can inspect archive layouts and fix supported layout problems for automatic installation, reducing manual sorting at import.

Recent releases added BSA archive previews when the relevant plugin supports them.

Setup and community

The installer is generally the easier route and can also create a portable installation. Downloads are available through GitHub Releases and Nexus Mods. MO2 is maintained as an open community project; users can report issues through GitHub or Discord, where contributors also test development builds, investigate bugs, discuss suggestions, and work on translations.

That openness brings a trade-off: the project remains unfinished and has many issues, while its documentation is sparse. The Mod Organizer 1 wiki offers general guidance, but users should account for differences between versions.

Pricing

MO2 is free, with no free trial because the software is free. There are no paid tiers or billing terms to weigh. Its GPL-3.0 license and community-maintained development suit users comfortable with an open project rather than a commercial support model.

Platforms

MO2 is for Windows. Version 2.5.0 requires Windows 10 1809 or newer, or Windows 11. It supports 64-bit games including Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4, as well as the 32-bit games supported by the original Mod Organizer. The virtual filesystem cannot work with Windows Store or Game Pass versions of supported games, so players using those editions should choose another route.

Who it's for

MO2 is best suited to Windows players who experiment with mods, want separate profiles, and value virtual management of supported games. It is a poor fit for Windows Store or Game Pass users, and the sparse documentation and unfinished state may frustrate anyone who expects a polished, fully guided experience.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with profiles, conflict detection, and virtual deployment for organizing varied mod setups.
Pros: Broad launcher detection and archive-layout checking can make importing mods more convenient.
Cons: Windows Store and Game Pass game editions are unsupported because of the virtual filesystem.
Cons: The project is unfinished, has many issues, and offers sparse documentation.

Alternatives

Game Mod Managers is the broader category to browse if MO2's Windows and game-store constraints rule it out.

Limo is a free, open-source option for Linux users who need a different platform.
Modrinth is worth considering for readers seeking a freemium option spanning Windows, Linux, macOS, web, and API access.
CurseForge offers a free web catalog for Minecraft mods and modpacks.
Vortex is a free Windows mod manager and an alternative for readers considering another open-source manager.
Corkscrew is a free option for Linux and macOS users.
HumanitZ Mod Manager is a free portable desktop app for HumanitZ mod management on Linux or Windows.
Alternative Mod Launcher is a free Windows choice for players with XCOM 2 (WotC) or XCOM Chimera Squad and its stated Steam and .NET requirements.
PalMods Desktop App offers a free Windows download with no account requirement or download paywalls.

Verdict

Choose Mod Organizer 2 if you want a free, open-source Windows tool for maintaining profiles and managing mods through virtual deployment. Its core approach is well suited to experimentation, but unsupported Store and Game Pass editions are a firm barrier, and its unfinished state calls for patience. Look elsewhere if either limitation conflicts with how you play.
