Overview

This single-page web app connects to DOSBox Staging through its Web Server API to scan and change emulated memory. The maker requires DOSBox Staging 0.83 or newer, and the API must be enabled in the emulator configuration. The API server runs at http://127.0.0.1:8086 by default. These requirements make compatibility the first consideration: if you cannot meet them, the app has no broader use as a general memory editor.

Key features

Memory scanning: Search for values, filter results, and add addresses to a Cheat Table. This gives players a way to narrow down candidates before changing memory, rather than making blind edits.
Editing and freezing: Double-click a table value to edit it, or freeze values such as health, ammunition, or coins so they do not decrease. These are useful controls for specific in-game values, but they remain tied to DOSBox Staging.
Live polling control: Pause memory polling during CPU-heavy game segments. That is a practical option when continuous updates are undesirable during demanding play.
JSON tables and range selection: Export and load Cheat Tables as JSON for sharing, and select ranges with Shift-click or Ctrl-click. The combination helps manage and reuse groups of addresses without requiring each one to be handled individually.
Source-run option: The project uses only Python’s standard library, so running the Python source does not require a pip installation. Precompiled executables are also offered for Windows and Linux.

The latest release says closing the browser tab signals the Python server to shut down gracefully. The project is MIT licensed and credits George Petrakis as its creator.

Pricing

DOSBox Cheat Engine costs 0.00 USD per free under the MIT license. There is no paid tier or free trial; the free plan is the product. It suits players who want these DOSBox Staging controls without a software charge, though the price does not remove the version and API requirements.

Platforms

The project offers precompiled executables for Windows and Linux, and also describes running its Python source directly. Its interface is a web application, but it still depends on a local DOSBox Staging API connection. The listed platform coverage includes Linux, macOS, web, and Windows; no separate macOS executable is described.

Who it's for

Choose it if you play DOS games through DOSBox Staging 0.83 or newer, can enable the Web Server API, and want to search, edit, freeze, or share memory values. Look elsewhere if you need an editor for a different emulator or cannot configure the required API.

Pros and cons

Pro: Scanning, filtering, editing, and freezing are combined in one focused workflow for DOSBox Staging.
Pro: JSON table export and loading make cheat sets shareable, while range selection supports working with multiple addresses.
Pro: It is free and MIT licensed, with source execution possible using Python’s standard library alone.
Con: DOSBox Staging 0.83 or newer and an enabled Web Server API are mandatory, sharply limiting compatibility.
Con: Precompiled executables are offered for Windows and Linux; users on other listed platforms may need to rely on the source-run option.

Alternatives

Game Memory Editors is a useful category starting point if DOSBox Cheat Engine’s emulator-specific requirement does not fit.

CoSMOS is another free option for Linux and Windows, with no registration required and no features locked or adware.
ReClass.NET is a free, open-source MIT-licensed choice for Linux and Windows, supplied without warranty.
scanmem is a free, open-source option for Android and Linux, licensed under GPLv3, with libscanmem under LGPLv3.
Bit Slicer is a free, open-source alternative for macOS 10.8 or later.
PINCE is a free, open-source Linux reverse engineering tool under GPLv3+.
MemDBG is an open-source option spanning Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Squalr is an open-source option with listed coverage for Android, API, Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Game Cheetah is an open-source option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

DOSBox Cheat Engine is a sensible pick for DOSBox Staging players who want free, focused controls for finding and holding memory values, especially if they value shareable JSON tables. Its main reason to choose it is that targeted workflow; its main reason to look elsewhere is equally clear: it requires DOSBox Staging 0.83 or newer with the Web Server API enabled.
