Overview

Created to automate legal practice, Docassemble also supports applications in other fields. An interview can produce a downloadable or emailed document, submit an application, interact with an API, or simply provide information. Conditional logic can tailor questions to what a respondent still needs to supply, making it useful for complex intake and application processes.

This is a platform to build and operate, not a ready-made workflow service. Interviews are authored with YAML, Markdown, and Python, and the maker recommends Docker for deployment. Teams without development capacity or server administration should consider a hosted alternative instead.

Key features

Interviews and document assembly

Templates can be composed in DOCX or PDF, with a Word add-in for DOCX workflows. Completed interviews can generate PDF, RTF, or DOCX files for download or email, as well as submit applications or pass information to APIs. That range suits organizations handling different outputs from a common interview; the authoring model favors people comfortable with structured content and code over users seeking a purely visual questionnaire builder.

Integrations and extensions

Files can be synchronized with a server through Google Drive, OneDrive, or a command-line utility. Developers can extend interviews with Python and connect third-party applications through the API. Listed capabilities also include touchscreen signatures, live chat, screen sharing, remote screen control, AI, SMS, email, fax, OCR, multilingual interviews, and multiuser applications. The breadth creates room for varied workflows, though teams need to assess which capabilities fit their use case and deployment.

Deployment and security

Docker is the recommended deployment route, with Docker Compose, Helm, and installation without Docker also described. A single machine is sufficient for most deployments, while clusters can support high performance. Answers are encrypted in the SQL database unless the multi_user variable is True; uploaded and assembled documents are stored without encryption. The maker recommends HTTPS and warns that developer accounts can run arbitrary code on the server. Those choices make security review and account governance essential, particularly for sensitive legal or personal data.

Documentation, a community Slack group, and GitHub issues provide routes for questions and bug reports. That support is useful for a self-managed platform, but it does not remove the work of maintaining its server and applications.

Pricing

The self-hosted Docassemble software plan costs 0.00 USD per free and has no software usage fees. Hosting an internet-accessible server typically costs $10–$40 per month or more, depending on performance, availability, and support needs. The free plan is therefore a strong fit for teams able to supply infrastructure and technical oversight; it is not a zero-cost hosted service.

There are no paid software tiers described here, so the main cost trade-off is operational: teams that need more performance, availability, or support may spend more on hosting. No software seat or interview quota is specified.

Platforms

Docassemble supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and web deployments. Its self-hosted and Linux options suit organizations that want control over their environment, while the API supports integrations. It is not presented as a native mobile application.

Who it's for

Choose Docassemble if your organization needs tailored interviews and document generation, can author workflows with YAML, Markdown, and Python, and is prepared to host and secure the service. It is particularly relevant to legal automation, though its general-purpose design supports other application workflows. Look elsewhere if you need a managed product or want to avoid responsibility for server security and document storage.

Pros and cons

Pros

No software usage fees: the self-hosted software is free, leaving hosting as the principal stated cost.
Flexible interview outcomes: conditional interviews can produce documents, submit applications, use APIs, or provide information.
Extensible deployment: Python extensions, API integrations, and options from a single machine to a cluster accommodate different technical needs.

Cons

Hosting is yours to arrange: an internet-hosted server typically costs $10–$40 per month or more, and deployment requires technical ownership.
Storage needs scrutiny: uploaded and assembled documents are unencrypted, and answer encryption depends on the multi_user setting.
Developer access carries risk: developer accounts can run arbitrary code on the server, making permissions and HTTPS important operational concerns.

Alternatives

For legal document automation, compare legal document automation software; for broader process automation, see legal workflow automation software. Teams focused on creating legal forms can browse legal forms software, while those seeking a wider document-generation category can compare document automation software or document template management software.

Legito is worth considering if you want document lifecycle management, customizable workflows and approvals, and electronic signatures, with a free plan and a Starter plan at 6.90 EUR per month. Clio Draft offers AI-powered Word templates, court forms, questionnaires, and document sets for web users. WealthCounsel is a paid option for teams seeking a trusts-and-estates-focused product suite across desktop, mobile, and web platforms.

ClauseBase may suit teams seeking advanced drafting and questionnaires, with pricing by contact. Gavel offers a free trial with 25 free queries per user and shared Workspace collaboration during the trial; choose it if those trial terms fit your evaluation needs. Lawgic is another paid option for Windows and macOS. Mitratech CaseCloud is a paid web and mobile option with personalized demos. Neota Logic is a paid web-based alternative.

Verdict

Docassemble is a strong choice for technically capable organizations that want fine control over interview logic and document workflows without software usage charges. Choose it when you can host the platform and govern access and storage carefully; look elsewhere if you need managed hosting or encrypted storage for uploaded and assembled documents.
