Overview

Unlimited members across the plans means a growing audience does not by itself require a more expensive tier. The more immediate constraints are operational: staff seats, storage, monthly page views, and email sends. Discourse lets organizations self-host or use managed hosting, and says customers own their community and data and can export everything at any time.

The full codebase is freely available on GitHub, while integrations include GitHub, chat providers, Zendesk, and authentication providers. Discourse powers more than 22,000 communities. That breadth of deployment choice suits groups that want ownership and flexibility, but self-hosting is the option for teams prepared to operate the software themselves.

Key features

Moderation tools, private spaces, event hosting, and custom domains cover the core needs of an organized member community. Mobile apps are available for both major mobile platforms, so members have a mobile option as well as the community site. These tools make Discourse a stronger fit for structured, actively moderated communities than for organizations seeking only a support desk or a lightweight social network.

Plan quotas still matter even with unlimited members. The free and Pro plans both allow 500k monthly page views; Pro adds storage and email capacity, not more page views. Enterprise is the tier for communities whose traffic exceeds that ceiling and that need enterprise authentication, deeper customization, or a 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Pricing

Discourse is freemium. Free is a hosted plan with no charge: unlimited members, two staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 20k monthly emails, 10 categories, and 5GB of storage. It is a practical starting point for a community with a small admin and moderator team, but the category limit and modest storage can become constraints as its structure and uploads grow.

Pro costs 100.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It keeps unlimited members and the 500k page-view allowance while raising the limits to five staff seats, 100k monthly emails, unlimited categories, and 20GB storage. This is the straightforward upgrade for a small team that needs more room for content and communication without increasing page-view capacity.

Business costs 500.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 15 staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 300k monthly emails, unlimited categories, 100GB storage, priority support, and standard migration services. The higher price is most defensible for a larger operating team that can use those expanded email and storage allowances and values priority support and migration help; the page-view cap remains the same as Pro.

Enterprise uses custom pricing and includes unlimited members and staff seats, 1M+ monthly page views, 1.5M+ monthly emails, unlimited categories, and 200GB+ storage. It also includes SSO, SAML, enterprise authentication, and a 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Paid plans can be tried free for 14 days, with no credit card required up front for hosting plans. A free plan is also available, so organizations can begin without committing to a paid tier.

Platforms

Discourse can be self-hosted or run on managed hosting. Its mobile apps cover both major mobile platforms. The self-hosted route pairs well with the freely available codebase and data ownership, while managed hosting avoids having to run the software directly.

Who it's for

Discourse is a strong fit for organizations, member groups, and customer communities that need moderation, private areas, events, and room for unlimited members. Free works for a small staff team with moderate resource needs; Pro and Business suit teams that need more seats, storage, email capacity, or operational support. Look elsewhere if the main need is a help desk rather than a community, or if a team needs more than 500k monthly page views but does not need Enterprise's higher-tier services.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited members on every plan means growth in audience size does not force a tier change.
Pro: Free hosting includes 500k monthly page views and 20k monthly emails, making it useful for a community that can work within two staff seats and 5GB of storage.
Pro: Self-hosting, open-source code, and the ability to export community data give organizations meaningful control over deployment and ownership.
Con: Pro and Business retain the same 500k monthly page-view limit as Free, so paying more does not solve a traffic ceiling until Enterprise.
Con: Business costs 500.00 USD per month, a substantial step up from Pro's 100.00 USD per month for teams that need its additional staff, storage, email, migration, or support allowances.

Alternatives

Apache Answer is worth considering when free, self-hosted, Apache-licensed software is the priority. Flarum is another free community option for readers comparing web-based alternatives.

Circle suits teams that want a paid platform with apps across Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows; its Professional plan is 89.00 USD per month with annual billing, unlimited members, 3 admins, 10 moderators, and 20 spaces. Sugester may fit a smaller operation looking for a freemium option with a free plan for 3 users, 100 monthly email sends, 3 projects, and 1 GB storage.

Freshdesk is the alternative to weigh when the team wants a support-oriented product: its free program covers 1–2 agents for 6 months, and it also offers paid plans. Zoho Desk is another option to compare for desk software, with a free tier for 3 users and paid plans priced in INR.

Higher Logic Thrive is another paid community-platform alternative. Zapnito is worth comparing for teams seeking freemium access, with a Starter plan that includes free platform access, unlimited data, email automation, and 24/7 customer support.

Verdict

Choose Discourse if you want a community platform with unlimited members, meaningful moderation and privacy tools, and the option to own and self-host the software or pay for managed hosting. Its free tier is capable for a small team, and paid plans add staff, storage, email, and support capacity. Look elsewhere if the unchanged 500k page-view ceiling on Pro and Business is too restrictive or if the monthly cost of Business does not match the resources your team needs.
