Overview

Diigo is a personal knowledge-management tool for saving, annotating and searching web material. It suits researchers, students and teams that need to keep context with the links they collect. Its combination of searchable web archives and shared annotations is useful, but the free plan’s caps and the sharp differences between tiers matter.

Key features

Diigo’s cloud library collects links, pages, notes and pictures, with full-text search across saved material. It can also archive webpages for later searching, a practical safeguard when a page changes or disappears. While browsing on a PC, tablet or mobile device, users can mark pages with digital highlights and sticky notes; group libraries let members search shared material and interact with annotations on the page.

Saving options extend beyond manual bookmarking: social-media items can be saved automatically, and Save by Email captures links and notes sent by email. Diigo supports importing browser bookmarks, Delicious and Pinboard libraries, and exporting the library and annotated PDFs. Its web services include an API, blog auto-publishing, tagrolls and linkrolls. These make it more adaptable than a simple bookmark folder, particularly for users who already organize research through tags, annotations or publishing workflows.

The limits are consequential. Free excludes PDF annotation and caps saved bookmarks and notes at 1,000, highlights at 200, and screenshots and images at 50. Standard and Professional remove many of those ceilings, while Teacher offers unusually expanded allowances at no charge but remains constrained compared with Professional.

Pricing

Free costs $0 and is best for trying Diigo or maintaining a small personal library. Its 1,000-item cap, 200-highlight limit, lack of PDF annotation and limited social bookmarking make it a poor fit for a growing research archive.

Teacher costs $0. It raises the allowances to unlimited bookmarks and notes, 5,000 highlights, 50 PDF annotations, 1,000 screenshots and images, and 20 outliners. It includes one public group with unlimited members and 20 private groups of up to 50 members each. Those group allowances and higher quotas make it compelling for classroom use, though PDF annotation and several personal-library features still have ceilings.

Standard is $5/month or $40/year. It includes unlimited bookmarks and notes, highlights, cached pages, and screenshots and images; 100 PDF annotations; 40 outliners; one public group with unlimited members; and three private groups of up to 10 members each. It is the sensible paid tier for an individual or small collaboration that needs an uncapped web archive but can work within PDF and group limits.

Professional is $6/month or $59/year. It makes bookmarks and notes, highlights, PDF annotations, cached pages, screenshots and images, outliners, and groups unlimited, and removes the social-bookmarking limit. The modest step up from Standard suits heavier users and teams that would otherwise run into annotation, group or social-saving caps.

Platforms

Diigo is available on the web, Android, iOS and macOS, with a browser extension. Its supported apps include Diigo Browser for iOS, Diigo for Android and Quick Note on Mac. The maker says it meets most WCAG 2.0 standards. It says browsing history is not recorded except for pages users specifically bookmark to its servers, which are located in the United States; accounts use member-created passwords and restricted employee access, though account security is not guaranteed.

Who it's for

Diigo is a strong match for people who need more than a list of URLs: researchers, students, teachers and professionals such as consultants, recruiters and law firms can preserve pages, mark them up and retrieve material through search. Teachers get a particularly broad free group setup. Choose another tool if your library is likely to outgrow Free and you do not want a paid plan, or if your work depends on more than 100 PDF annotations or more than three small private groups on Standard.

Pros and cons

Pros: Searchable webpage archives preserve context beyond a bare link, and on-page highlights and notes make research easier to revisit.
Pros: Shared libraries support group discovery and annotation, with substantial free group allowances on Teacher.
Pros: Email capture, social bookmarking, imports, exports and publishing tools provide several routes into and out of the library.
Cons: Free’s 1,000 saved-item cap and 200 highlights can constrain a serious personal archive, and PDF annotation is unavailable.
Cons: Standard still limits PDF annotations to 100 and private groups to three, so collaboration-heavy users may need Professional.

Verdict

Choose Diigo if your bookmarks need to function as a searchable, annotated research library, especially when a group must share findings and context. Teacher is a standout free choice for classroom groups, while Professional is the clearest fit for users who need uncapped annotations and groups. Look elsewhere if you want a simple, high-volume free bookmark collection without Diigo’s item and feature ceilings.
