Overview

DHIS2-Ed is an education management information system for collecting, analyzing, visualizing, and using data from schools and other educational institutions. It is best suited to ministries and institutions building coordinated, system-wide education data practices; organizations without the technical capacity to operate a secure central server should look elsewhere.

Key features

Its SEMIS app brings student, staff, and school records together, covering attendance, student progress, and staff registration. Attendance can be recorded on the web or Android in online and offline modes, which helps staff keep working when connectivity is intermittent. Periodic internet access is still needed to upload data, so offline support does not remove the need for connectivity altogether.

The Education Toolkit provides customizable annual school census forms, standardized data-collection metadata, dashboards, and analysis modules. Users can work with maps, charts, tables, and reports, and start from dashboards for SDG4 and CESA. Custom dashboards and API access are supported, giving institutions room to shape analysis and connect systems rather than relying only on fixed reports.

DHIS2-Ed can exchange data with public health programs and other sectors using DHIS2, and can integrate with existing software and data sources. Country-specific tools and forms can be built as custom applications; SEMIS can also be extended with features such as payroll management or timetable scheduling. These options suit institutions with distinct local requirements, but they imply design and implementation work rather than an out-of-the-box package for every need.

Controlled access to data and analytics at different levels of the education system supports differentiated access. HISP groups support implementation from pilot to national scale, including capacity building for national and district staff. Users can contact their closest HISP group or email emis@dhis2.org.

Pricing

DHIS2-Ed is free and open-source: its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There are no paid tiers to trade features against, and the plan includes custom dashboards and API access. The key cost to plan for is operational rather than a subscription: SEMIS requires a secure central server, computers and/or Android devices, and periodic internet connectivity for uploads. The free price makes it accessible to institutions, but does not make the infrastructure or implementation burden disappear.

Platforms

DHIS2-Ed is available on web and Android. SEMIS supports attendance in both online and offline modes on these platforms; periodic connectivity is necessary for uploading collected data.

Who it's for

Ministries and educational institutions seeking better education data use and evidence-based decision-making are the clearest fit. The combination of school records, configurable data collection, analytics, and cross-sector exchange is relevant when information must serve multiple levels of an education system. It is a weaker choice for a small organization seeking a self-contained service without server, device, connectivity, or implementation responsibilities.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open-source, with custom dashboards and API access, avoids a software subscription charge while supporting tailored analysis and integration.
Pros: Offline attendance on web and Android helps schools record data despite intermittent connectivity, with uploads possible when internet access returns.
Pros: Configurable census forms, standardized metadata, and SDG4 and CESA dashboards give institutions both local flexibility and established reporting starting points.
Cons: A secure central server, computers and/or Android devices, and periodic internet access are required, creating a meaningful infrastructure commitment.
Cons: Country-specific applications and extensions can address local needs, but institutions must account for the work of building and implementing them.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of options, see Learning Analytics Software.

Choose Enflux if a paid platform with a free trial is a better fit; its CompetencyGenie Chrome extension is free to try, while platform pricing is custom. EdOptimize is another free, self-hosted web option, with an Open source (GPLv3) plan whose modifications and copies must use GPLv3 and disclose source code.

Consider D2L Brightspace if customized pricing based on learner count, licenses, features, add-ons, and services suits your institution. PowerSchool Behavior Support, Civitas Learning Student Impact Platform, Ellucian Advising, Canvas Intelligent Insights, and Jisc Learning Analytics are paid alternatives with pricing not stated; Jisc Learning Analytics is an optional extra for Jisc members.

Verdict

DHIS2-Ed is a strong choice for ministries and education institutions that need configurable, connected data systems and can support the infrastructure behind them. Its free, open-source model and substantial reporting and integration capabilities are compelling; the central server, devices, connectivity, and implementation work are the main reasons to choose a less infrastructure-dependent option.
