Overview

Dexed is a DX7-inspired software synthesizer and MIDI cartridge librarian for musicians who want to work with classic DX7/TX7 program data as well as synth sounds. Its combination of broad DAW automation and SysEx handling is compelling for DX7-focused workflows, but it is not a guaranteed replica of the original instrument.

Key features

Dexed exposes 144 DX7 parameters for DAW automation from one panel, making detailed control accessible within a project rather than limiting users to a small set of mapped controls. Real-time VU meters for each operator add useful feedback while shaping sounds.

As a librarian, it can send and receive DX7 SysEx messages, including controller change, and load or save DX7/TX7 SysEx programs. It can also save an individual program to its own SysEx file, a practical option for keeping sounds portable. The three engine types—Modern, Mark I and OPL Series—provide alternatives within its DX7-oriented design, while microtuning and MPE support extend its usefulness beyond a strict hardware-style workflow.

VST, AU and LV2 formats, along with a standalone app, give it several routes into a music setup. The sound engine follows DX7 characteristics, but the project cautions that Dexed should not be expected to reproduce a DX7 perfectly. Minimal documentation on the Dexed Wiki means newcomers may need to work things out without much guidance.

Pricing

Dexed is free under the GPL v3 license. The free software includes the synth, standalone app and librarian capabilities, with no paid tier described. That makes it an easy choice for anyone seeking a no-cost DX7-focused instrument, though users who need more extensive documentation or a dependable hardware replica should consider other options.

Platforms

Dexed supports Linux, macOS and Windows, with VST, AU and LV2 plugin formats. Its standalone option is useful when a host is not part of the workflow; plugin support makes it viable inside a DAW. Release 1.0.1 fixes scaling issues and rebuilds the Linux binary for older glibc versions.

Who it's for

Choose Dexed if you want a free synth with substantial DX7 parameter automation and direct handling of DX7/TX7 SysEx programs. It is particularly relevant to musicians managing legacy patches or exploring DX7-style sounds across Linux, macOS and Windows. It is less suited to users who expect a perfect DX7 clone or need detailed documentation.

Pros and cons

Pro: 144 automatable parameters and operator meters support detailed control and feedback in a DAW.
Pro: SysEx input/output and DX7/TX7 program-file management give it a useful librarian role as well as a synth role.
Pro: GPL v3 licensing, standalone use and support for three desktop operating systems make it accessible without a purchase.
Con: The project warns that the sound is not a perfect DX7 clone, so exact hardware reproduction is not its promise.
Con: Documentation is minimal, which can make learning its functions harder for less experienced users.

Alternatives

Surge XT is another free, open-source virtual instrument plugin for Linux, macOS and Windows; choose it if you want a broader alternative to Dexed's DX7-centered focus.

Vital offers a free Basic plan with 75 presets, 25 wavetables and full synth features, plus a $5.00 USD per month subscription. It may suit readers who want a preset- and wavetable-oriented option rather than Dexed's DX7 librarian workflow.

BBC Symphony Orchestra has a free Discover plan with 34 instruments, 47 techniques, one mix signal and a 240MB footprint; choose it for an orchestral instrument set instead of a DX7-style synth.

IK Multimedia ReSing has a free plan with two voices, two instruments and one RVC import, but no model generation; consider it for voice-oriented work rather than DX7 synthesis.

Pianoteq is a paid instrument with a free trial, while Repro is a paid synth package with a free trial. PREMIER SOUND FACTORY and Voltage Modular are other options to compare.

Verdict

Dexed is a strong free choice for musicians who want a DX7-oriented synth and a capable SysEx librarian in one cross-platform package. Its automation and program management are the main reasons to choose it; the limited documentation and explicit caveat about clone accuracy are reasons to look elsewhere if guidance or faithful hardware reproduction matters more.
