Overview

Descript is a video and audio editor for people who want to shape recordings by working with their transcripts. It is best suited to podcast and video creators who need recording, cleanup and collaboration in one workflow. Its transcript-first approach is a strong fit for spoken content, though frequent production can run into monthly usage limits.

Key features

Editing, transcription and AI

Descript automatically transcribes recordings, then lets users edit the text to change the underlying audio or video. That makes cutting dialogue and removing filler words or silence more direct than locating each passage on a timeline. Automatic captions, translation and transcription in 25 languages broaden its use for publishing to different audiences.

Studio Sound reduces background noise and enhances voices; other editing tools include green screen, eye contact and AI speech. Underlord, the built-in AI co-editor, can write, edit, design, and generate visuals or voiceovers under the user’s direction. The range is useful for creators who want assistance inside the editing workflow, but the monthly AI-credit allowances mean heavier use requires a higher tier.

Recording and collaboration

Rooms records up to 10 participants with separate camera, microphone and screen tracks, making it a practical option for remote interviews and group recordings. Shared projects, live collaboration, comments and version history support team workflows. Users can also share a link to collect comments on a video.

Admin controls cover users, permissions and separate drives. Descript supports timeline export to Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools and other tools, so a transcript-led draft can fit into a broader production process. It also integrates with services including Zoom, Google Drive, YouTube, Slack, HubSpot and DaVinci Resolve.

Pricing

Descript has a free plan and paid plans priced per person. The free tier is useful for trying the transcript-based workflow, but its 60 minutes per month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p local export and 5GB of cloud storage make it a limited choice for ongoing production. There is no free trial.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	60 minutes per month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p local export and 5GB cloud storage.
Hobbyist	1624.00 USD per month	10 media hours and 400 AI credits per month, watermark-free 1080p export and one person included.
Creator	2435.00 USD per month	30 media hours and 800 AI credits per month, watermark-free 4K export; team of three billed separately.
Business	5065.00 USD per month	40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits per month, team of five billed separately and priority support with an SLA.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Team-sized AI credits and media hours, training opt-out, custom retention, SSO, SCIM, audit logs and a dedicated customer success manager.

Hobbyist suits an individual who needs more monthly capacity and watermark-free 1080p output, but it does not include 4K export. Creator is the step up for higher-volume work or 4K delivery; its team of three is billed separately. Business raises the allowances and adds priority support, while its five-person team is also billed separately. Enterprise is aimed at larger teams that need administrative and onboarding support, with custom pricing.

Platforms

Descript is available on macOS, Windows and the web. The desktop app supports macOS 14 Sonoma and Windows 11 or newer. Maximum export resolution is 4K on eligible plans.

Who it's for

Descript makes the most sense for creators and teams producing podcasts, interviews, social clips, screen recordings, product demos, training videos or internal communications. Transcript-led editing is especially useful when spoken content is central, and the collaboration and remote-recording tools help when several people contribute. A creator who needs unrestricted free use or a workflow centered on conventional timeline editing should weigh those limits before choosing it.

Pros and cons

Pro: Editing through a transcript makes spoken-word cuts and cleanup straightforward.
Pro: Rooms, shared projects, comments and version history bring recording and team review into the same workflow.
Pro: Timeline export and integrations with major editing and publishing tools support handoff to other parts of a production workflow.
Con: Free use is capped at 60 minutes monthly and 720p local export, with only 100 one-time AI credits.
Con: The included team sizes on Creator and Business are billed separately, so their per-person plans are not simple flat team prices.
Con: The desktop app requires macOS 14 Sonoma or Windows 11 or newer.

Alternatives

Choose Restream instead if you need a free plan that works across more platforms, including Android, iOS and Linux; its free plan includes two simultaneous channels and Restream branding. For a free recording option without usage limits or watermarks, OBS Studio is worth considering, though its supported platforms are Linux, macOS and Windows.

Riverside Magic Audio, Async, Iris.fm, Podbean, VDO.Ninja and Vimeo are also alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose Descript if you make spoken-word video or audio and want transcript-led editing, recording and team review together. Its main advantage is the close fit between transcripts and editing; its main drawback is that monthly media hours and AI credits, plus separately billed teammates on some plans, can constrain or complicate scaling.
