Overview

Decent Sampler is a free player for sample libraries built in its own DecentSampler format, best suited to musicians using compatible libraries and creators making them. Its mix of plugin and standalone versions across desktop systems and iOS is unusually broad for a no-cost player, but the format restriction is decisive: this is not a general-purpose sampler for arbitrary libraries.

Key features

The player loads .dspreset and .dslibrary files and supports WAV, AIFF, and FLAC samples, with sample mapping and round-robin playback for constructing playable instruments. It can run as a plugin or standalone app, though plugin formats differ by operating system. The maker provides usage guides for Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic, and GarageBand, which should help users in those environments get started.

Creators can build libraries from WAV or AIFF files using a text editor, with format documentation, a Q&A page, and the Pianobook Discord help channel for guidance. For libraries submitted to the Decent Samples store, the company handles hosting, copy protection, and platform maintenance for a 30% commission, paid monthly through PayPal. That removes some distribution work but costs creators a share of sales.

Version 1.34.0 includes shelf EQ, darker delay repeats, and the ability to switch modulators on and off. Downloads require an email address. Bug reports can go through a contact form or bug tracker; the tracker requires a separate account.

Pricing

Decent Sampler: 0.00 USD per free. The plan plays sample libraries in DecentSampler format (.dspreset and .dslibrary). It is a straightforward fit for users who already have compatible libraries or want to create them without paying for the player. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh against it.

Platforms

Windows 10 and later are supported in 32-bit and 64-bit VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone versions. On Mac, Intel and Apple Silicon systems have VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone options. Linux support covers x64 and ARM64, with VST, VST3, and standalone versions. An iOS AUv3 and standalone version is also linked from the product page. Check the format you need before choosing: AU is listed for Mac and AUv3 for iOS, while Linux has no AAX option.

Who it's for

Decent Sampler makes sense for musicians whose libraries use its format, especially those who want a free player on desktop or iOS, and for creators who want to build compatible instruments. It is a poor match if you need to load libraries in other formats. Creators considering the store should also decide whether its managed hosting and maintenance justify giving up 30% commission.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free use with both plugin and standalone options across Windows, Mac, Linux, and iOS makes it accessible on a wide range of setups.
Pro: Sample mapping, round-robin playback, and support for WAV, AIFF, and FLAC cover useful building blocks for compatible libraries.
Con: Playback is limited to .dspreset and .dslibrary, so it will not serve as a universal sampler for libraries in other formats.
Con: Downloading requires an email address, and the bug tracker adds a separate account requirement.

Alternatives

Sampler Software is the broader category to browse if you are still comparing sampler tools. Consider sfizz for a free alternative with Linux, Mac, Windows, web, and API platforms; TX16Wx Software Sampler if you want a free sampler plugin with a free trial and an unrestricted licence option; or Vaporizer 2 for free GPL-3.0 software with standalone and plugin formats on desktop systems. LinuxSampler is another free option, though commercial hardware or software use requires prior written permission. Ami Sampler, Just a Sample, Momentum, and Sample Dicer are also alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Decent Sampler if you want a free, widely available player for DecentSampler-format libraries or need a player and creation route within that format. Its platform reach and plugin-plus-standalone setup are compelling; look elsewhere if your libraries are not compatible or you need a general-purpose sampler.
