Overview

Datto Endpoint Backup for Windows is a cloud backup and recovery service covering Windows PCs, servers, virtual machines, and cloud instances. It is aimed at MSPs and IT departments managing remote devices. Its strongest appeal is appliance-free cloud backup paired with centralized oversight and several recovery paths; compatibility constraints and storage-based custom pricing narrow the fit.

Key features

Backups go directly to Datto Cloud, without a local appliance. Administrators can set what data is selected, how often jobs run, how long backups are retained, and how much bandwidth they use. Schedules range from hourly to every 24 hours, with retention choices of 90 days, 1 year, 3 years, or 7 years. Hourly scheduling supports frequent recovery points, while longer retention may increase storage use under the consumption-based model.

Recovery spans file and folder restores, restoring file versions to another location or downloading them directly, and bare metal recovery to the same or different hardware. Point-in-time restoration, ransomware recovery, failover and failback orchestration, and test failover broaden the recovery options for organizations that need more than individual-file retrieval.

A unified portal gives remote visibility into backup status, history, storage use, and policy settings across Windows and Mac endpoints, with alerts for backup activity. Listed integrations connect Autotask PSA with ticketing, Datto RMM and Kaseya VSA with deployment, IT Glue with backup-status syncing, and Compliance Manager GRC with compliance evidence. These connections make it more relevant to managed-service workflows than to a standalone home backup setup.

Backups are encrypted in transit and at rest, with optional customer-managed keys. Security options also include forced MFA, KaseyaOne single sign-on, and immutable Datto Cloud storage. Customers can choose a storage region, and Datto says using multiple available regions provides geo-redundancy.

Pricing

The Usage-based pricing plan is paid, with custom pricing billed based on storage used. There is no free plan. Storage-based billing ties cost to consumption rather than a stated per-seat price, which may suit teams whose backup footprint changes, but prospective buyers must request pricing from Datto to establish a budget. No lower-priced tier or seat allowance is described.

Platforms

The product supports Windows 10 and 11, Windows Server 2012 R2 through 2025, and macOS. Windows 10/11 Enterprise multi-session is incompatible. Datto Endpoint Backup v2 also does not support REFS, Windows deduplication or compression, or backup of external, removable, or network drives. Those exclusions can rule it out where such systems or storage are part of the backup scope.

Who it's for

MSPs and IT departments responsible for distributed endpoints are the clearest fit: the service combines direct-to-cloud backup, remote status monitoring, policy management, and integrations for deployment, ticketing, and compliance evidence. Teams needing an appliance-free route to backup and hardware-independent bare metal recovery should also consider it. It is a poor fit for organizations that rely on unsupported file systems, deduplicated or compressed Windows volumes, or external, removable, or network drives.

Pros and cons

Pro: Direct-to-cloud backup removes the need to deploy a backup appliance.
Pro: File-level and bare metal recovery cover both routine file loss and full-device restoration.
Pro: Centralized Windows and Mac endpoint visibility, policy controls, and MSP-oriented integrations support remote administration.
Pro: Encryption, optional customer-managed keys, MFA, immutable storage, and selectable cloud regions provide several layers of protection and placement control.
Con: Storage-based custom pricing requires a quote before teams can judge cost.
Con: The exclusions for REFS, Windows deduplication and compression, and external, removable, or network drives limit coverage for some environments.
Con: Windows 10/11 Enterprise multi-session is unsupported.

Alternatives

For a broader disaster-recovery comparison, start with Disaster Recovery Software; for products focused on endpoint protection and restore, see Endpoint Backup Software. Teams evaluating SaaS coverage can compare SaaS Backup Software or Microsoft 365 Backup Software. The Professional Services Accounting Software and Professional Services Automation Software directories address different software categories.

Beyond Software is a paid subscription with Android, iOS, web, and Windows platforms and a subscription adjustable for growth; consider it if that platform mix or adjustable subscription matters more than Datto's backup and recovery focus. Acumatica Professional Services Edition offers paid custom pricing based on applications, expected use, resource needs, and deployment preferences, with unlimited capacity; it is a different option for buyers seeking that kind of configurable edition. Unanet ERP AE is paid and asks prospective users to schedule a demo. Accounting Seed is paid and requires a pricing request. BST11 ERP is paid and invites buyers to request a demo. Certinia Professional Services Cloud is a paid offering centered on resources, projects, and financials. ConnectWise PSA has paid Basic and Standard plans covering project management, ticketing, resource management, and a customer portal. Deltek Maconomy is a paid enterprise ERP for professional services firms, with pricing by demo request.

Verdict

Datto Endpoint Backup for Windows is a strong candidate for MSPs and IT teams that want appliance-free cloud backup, centralized endpoint oversight, and both file-level and bare metal recovery. Its security controls and recovery orchestration add useful depth. Choose another product if unsupported drive types or Windows configurations are essential, or if you need a firm price before engaging with the vendor.
