Overview

D&D Beyond Maps is a browser-based virtual tabletop for shared maps and tactical D&D sessions. It is a natural fit for groups already using D&D Beyond, especially those who want to bring library content into encounters. The free tier makes it easy to start, but Beta status and a mobile interface that may display incorrectly make it a less certain choice for groups that need a dependable, polished table on every device.

Key features

Maps combines combat encounters and initiative tracking with practical scene tools: fog of war, overlays, drawing, pings, stickers, and a distance ruler. Those tools cover the essentials for coordinating a tactical map, while shared dice rolls from Maps or a character sheet appear in the Game Log for everyone at the table.

Players can use maps and monster tokens from their D&D Beyond library, a useful advantage for groups already building their game there. Quickplay maps come prepared with monster tokens, fog of war, and stickers, reducing setup when a group wants to get into an encounter quickly. Master Tier subscribers can upload and scale custom maps, including animated maps, with up to 10gb of storage; that is the relevant upgrade for groups with their own map assets.

The maker labels Maps Beta and warns that bugs and performance issues are to be expected. It can be played in a browser on a device with an internet connection, but the maker says phones and tablets are not initially optimized and some menus or interface areas may display incorrectly. Groups planning to run sessions primarily on mobile should look elsewhere.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes up to 6 character slots, hosting games on Maps, inviting friends, and access to purchased content. It is a sensible starting point for a small group, but the six-slot ceiling may constrain players managing more characters.

Hero Tier costs 2.17 USD per month, with annual, semi-annual, and monthly billing offered. It adds unlimited character slots, 250+ Maps VTT components, weekly drop-in encounters, and community Homebrew. Groups that want more room for characters and additional ready-made resources should consider it; it does not include the custom map uploads and content sharing reserved for Master Tier.

Master Tier costs 4.58 USD per month, with annual, semi-annual, and monthly billing offered. It adds Homebrew monster tokens in Maps, custom map uploads, up to 10gb of map storage, and content sharing. Choose it if bringing your own maps or sharing content is central to the game. Hero and Master subscriptions offer a 30-day free trial, but trials cannot be started through the mobile app. Books are not included with subscriptions and must be purchased through the D&D Beyond Marketplace to access their digital features.

Platforms

Maps runs in a browser and is listed for Android, iOS, and web. The browser-based reach is convenient for groups using different devices, but phone and tablet users should account for the interface limitations before choosing it. D&D Beyond provides a Help Portal, Support Forum, and system status page. Wizards says it uses administrative, physical, and technical safeguards, while cautioning that internet transmission is not completely secure and security cannot be guaranteed.

Who it's for

Maps suits D&D groups that already use D&D Beyond libraries and want encounters, initiative, map tools, and shared dice in one tabletop. The free plan works for a group within its character-slot limit; Hero makes sense for groups that need unlimited character slots, while Master is aimed at those who need custom maps, Homebrew monster tokens, or content sharing. It is a weaker fit for mobile-first groups or anyone who needs a mature experience without expected Beta bugs and performance issues.

Pros and cons

Pro: Library maps and monster tokens can be used in the VTT, giving existing D&D Beyond users a direct route from their content to play.
Pro: Combat, initiative tracking, scene tools, and a shared dice Game Log keep several parts of tactical play together.
Pro: A free hosting tier allows groups to try shared map play without a subscription.
Con: The maker says bugs and performance issues are to be expected while Maps is in Beta.
Con: Phones and tablets are not initially optimized, and some interface areas may display incorrectly.
Con: Custom map uploads and content sharing require Master Tier, and books remain separate purchases.

Alternatives

If Maps' Beta status or mobile limitations are a concern, consider Virtual Tabletop Software to compare other options. Alchemy RPG is an alternative with a free plan and Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows support. Roll20 offers a free plan with base game-running tools, 100MB storage, and ads, and has Linux, macOS, web, and Windows support. Fantasy Grounds has a free-to-play plan with full Game Master and player functionality, unlimited campaigns, cloud connectivity, and free rulesets across Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Let's Role has a free Basic plan with all features and 125MB storage, plus Android, iOS, and web support. Owlbear Rodeo has a free Nestling plan limited to two rooms and supports Android, iOS, and web. Battlegrounds: RPG Edition is a macOS and Windows alternative with a free demo and no free trial. GameScape is a free option for Android, iOS, and web. Quest Portal has a free plan, a free trial, and Android, iOS, and web support.

Verdict

Choose D&D Beyond Maps if your group already uses D&D Beyond and wants library content, encounter tracking, and shared table tools in one browser-based VTT. Its accessible free tier and deeper custom-map options at Master Tier are compelling for that audience. Look elsewhere if mobile polish or a more dependable experience is a priority while Maps remains in Beta.
