Overview

TurboTax is tax-preparation software with web and mobile access as well as desktop software. It is a strong fit for filers who want a guided route from simple returns to more involved income, with expert assistance available when they need it. Choose it for the range of filing and help options; look carefully at plan eligibility and state charges before starting.

Key features

TurboTax supports self-employment, investment, and rental income, giving filers with those sources a route beyond basic wage returns. Those forms are excluded from the free simple-return offer, however, so broader coverage means moving to a paid tier. Deluxe searches more than 350 deductions and credits and includes AI-powered Intuit Assist; Premium and Expert Assist Premium cover more than 450. The larger search counts may matter to filers with more deductions to consider, but they come at higher federal prices.

Users can import, upload, or photograph tax documents, and information can be imported automatically from more than one million participating employers and financial institutions. That can reduce manual entry when a filer’s providers participate. Customers can get unlimited expert advice or have an expert prepare the return from start to finish, which is useful for people who want support without doing every step themselves.

TurboTax’s accuracy guarantee covers IRS or state penalties and interest caused by a calculation error, subject to terms. Mobile use requires internet access, and downloading or using the app may incur standard data rates. TurboTax says security is built into everything it does.

Pricing

TurboTax uses a freemium model, but free filing is narrowly aimed at simple Form 1040 returns; about 37% of taxpayers qualify. Itemized deductions, business income, stock sales, rental income, and other schedules are excluded. The Free Edition is free, with $0 federal, $0 state, and $0 to file for eligible simple returns. A separate TurboTax Free Edition offer also includes federal and state filing for simple Form 1040 returns only.

Do It Yourself Deluxe is $79.00 USD per month, billed at the federal price, with state additional; it includes 350+ deductions and credits. A separate Do It Yourself Deluxe offer is $79.00 USD per once, billed $79 federal with state additional, and says to file by March 31 to save and pay only when filing. Deluxe is the step up for people whose deductions or forms disqualify them from free filing.

Do It Yourself Premium is $139.00 USD per month, billed at the federal price with state additional, and includes 450+ deductions and credits. Expert Assist Premium is $209.00 USD per month on the same federal-price basis, with state additional and 450+ deductions and credits; its appeal is the combination of broader coverage and expert assistance. TurboTax Expert Full Service has custom pricing based on tax situation and forms used.

The TurboTax Mobile Free Offer is free, but requires starting in the TurboTax or Credit Karma mobile app by February 28, 2026, and eligibility restrictions apply. Most paid online and mobile products allow payment when filing, printing, mailing, or buying add-ons. Printing or electronically filing indicates satisfaction and generally waives the right to a refund.

Platforms

TurboTax is available online, as a mobile app, and as desktop software. Mobile use depends on an internet connection, so it is not an offline filing option.

Who it's for

Choose TurboTax if you have a simple Form 1040 and qualify for free filing, or if you need support for self-employment, investment, or rental income and are prepared to pay for a more suitable plan. It also suits filers who value document imports or the choice between expert advice and full-service preparation. It is less compelling for someone whose return falls outside the free tier and who wants to avoid federal plan fees plus possible state charges.

Pros and cons

Pros: Support for self-employment, investment, and rental income broadens its use beyond simple returns.
Pros: Document uploads and imports from participating institutions can cut down on manual entry.
Pros: Unlimited expert advice and full-service filing give users different levels of human support.
Cons: Free filing excludes itemized deductions and several common income types, and only about 37% of taxpayers qualify.
Cons: State filing is an additional cost on several paid plans, and paid federal prices rise from $79.00 USD per month for Deluxe to $209.00 USD per month for Expert Assist Premium.
Cons: Printing or filing generally waives the right to a refund.

Alternatives

For another US web-based option with a free tier, compare H&R Block Online: its Free Online plan is free, billed per state filed, for simple Form 1040 situations. TaxAct is another web-based freemium choice; its free federal filing is for eligible standard returns, state is additional, and its Deluxe plan is $59.99.

For other options, browse Personal Tax Software, Small Business Tax Software, AI Tax Software, or Tax Preparation Software. Readers considering the other listed products can also compare CloudTax, TaxDown, WISO Steuer, ClearTax, TurboTax Canada, and H&R Block Tax Software Canada.

Verdict

TurboTax is a good choice for eligible simple-return filers and for people with more involved income who want a path to expert advice or full-service preparation. Its document-import options and range of support are the strongest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if your return is too complex for the free tier and the paid federal price plus state costs outweighs that convenience.
