Overview

The editor brings prose, outline, and arcs views together, with optional panels for character lookups, voice consistency, beats, and unresolved threads. That keeps several revision checks close to the manuscript rather than in separate notes. The trade-off is a more elaborate workspace than many writers need for linear drafting.

Pendraic arranges planning and revision around eight areas: Promise, Engine, Nexus, Dynamics, Registry, Anchors, Iterations, and Closure. This framework can give novelists a repeatable way to work through a book, but may feel restrictive to writers who prefer to invent their own process.

Key features

The World Builder links maps, family trees, calendars, languages, timelines, and encyclopedia entries to prose. That interconnected reference set is especially useful when a novel’s setting or cast has many moving parts. Writers with little worldbuilding may get less from it.

AI options include Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and OpenRouter, through either a user’s own account or a Pendraic Managed AI wallet. When a writer starts a generation pass, Pendraic sends the prompt and necessary context to the selected provider under that provider’s terms. Pendraic says saved files are encrypted in transit and at rest, and that it neither trains models on users’ writing nor sells their content; writers should still weigh the provider terms before using AI with sensitive drafts.

The Free plan exports to Word, Markdown, and plain text. The broader format set includes Markdown, DOCX, and EPUB, though EPUB is not among the Free plan’s stated export formats. Email magic-link authentication means Pendraic does not handle account passwords. Deleted content is removed from the live database immediately and rotates out of backups within 30 days.

Pricing

Pendraic is freemium, with a 7-day trial and paid plans from $14.99/mo. Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed forever, and allows three active books, the full editor and worldbuilder, one AI cover per day, and one world map per day. That is a substantial starting point for a writer working on a small slate of projects, but the book cap and daily image limits will matter to prolific users.

Essentials costs 14.99 USD per month, billed per month. It raises the cap to ten active books, adds AI writing help using the writer’s own Claude or ChatGPT account, and allows up to 20 AI covers and 20 world maps per day. It suits authors who want more room and AI assistance without needing an unlimited library.

Premium costs 24.99 USD per month, billed per month, and includes unlimited active books, MCP connectivity from Claude or ChatGPT, up to 100 AI covers and 100 world maps per day, and priority support. It is the fit for high-volume project management or users who need MCP connectivity; co-writing with another person is described as planned for when it ships, not a current Premium feature.

The Pendraic Desktop plan costs 99.00 USD per once, billed once, for Mac and Windows, offline use, and one license for three computers, with a free 7-day trial and no card needed. It is a clear alternative for writers prioritizing offline desktop access over a subscription. A separate Desktop entry gives a price of 99.00 USD per month, billed No subscription, and up to 3 devices; prospective buyers should distinguish that from the one-time Pendraic Desktop offer.

Platforms

Pendraic is available on macOS, web, and Windows. Its one-time desktop plan adds offline use on Mac and Windows, while the free and subscription plans are not described as offline options.

Who it's for

Pendraic is best suited to novelists who want a connected drafting and planning system, especially those managing continuity across complicated stories. The free plan can accommodate a writer with up to three active books. Writers who need more concurrent books, frequent AI cover or map generation, or MCP connectivity have clear reasons to consider paid tiers. Those seeking a lightweight drafting app, or unwilling to send prompts and context to an AI provider, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Connected drafting and story references: prose, outline, arcs, and linked worldbuilding materials support work across manuscript and setting.
Usable free tier: the full editor and worldbuilder are included, with three active books and export to Word, Markdown, and plain text.
Flexible AI access: writers can choose among several providers and use their own accounts or a managed wallet.
AI privacy requires attention: generation prompts and context go to the selected provider under its terms.
Plan limits shape growth: Free caps active books and daily cover and map generation; higher allowances require monthly subscriptions.
Collaboration is not ready: co-writing is planned rather than included as a current feature.

Alternatives

Writers comparing fiction tools can also browse AI Book Writing Software and Writing Apps.

Jenova Creative Fiction Writer is a freemium option on Android, iOS, and web. Its free plan includes all core features with limited usage; Plus costs 20.00 USD per month and offers 30× Free usage, custom model selection, and no watermarks. Choose it when mobile access or custom model selection matters more than Pendraic’s connected worldbuilding framework.
AIWriteBook Audiobook Studio runs on web and as an extension. Its free tier provides 100 credits, about 12 pages, and an outline plus first chapter; Plus is 12.00 USD per month billed yearly for 1,000 credits/month and about 200 pages. It is a better fit for writers evaluating a credit-based, page-oriented workflow.
BookBud.ai is a web freemium tool whose free plan gives 25,000 signup credits to start a book, create a cover, and draft early chapters. Consider it when an initial credit allocation for getting a book underway is the priority.
Bookwiz is a web app with a free tier for up to three books, eight fast AI prompts, 30 inline autocompletes per day, and KDP-ready EPUB, print PDF, DOCX, and cover. Its free trial and export formats make it worth considering for authors prioritizing publishing-ready files.
Calliope offers a free unlimited-book editor and one-time credit packs. It may suit writers who want unlimited books in a free editor rather than Pendraic’s three-book free cap.
FireQuill has a web free plan with two projects and no AI; Companion costs 10.00 USD per month for three active projects and 750 chat conversations/month. It is an option for writers who want a small project limit and a defined monthly chat allowance.
Keter Labs is available via API and web. Its free plan includes 30 welcome credits, five requests per minute, and 50 requests per day; choose it when API access is central to the decision.
Manuscripts.ai is another freemium web option with a free trial; its free plan includes one active project, story templates, tokens, a Lore Book, Scene Beats, analysis reports, and AI editing and writing tools.

Verdict

Choose Pendraic if you are a novelist who wants drafting, planning, and world references connected in one workspace, and its three-book free limit or paid tiers suit your workload. Its main advantage is the breadth of continuity and worldbuilding tools around the prose. Look elsewhere if you want a simpler writing surface, need co-writing now, or do not want generation context sent to an external AI provider.
