Overview

LUNA is Universal Audio’s digital audio workstation for recording, producing, and mixing music. It suits musicians who want a full recording environment without an upfront subscription, and Apollo owners seeking a closely integrated workflow. Its free tier is a credible starting point; the choice to pay depends on whether Studio’s extensions and plug-ins justify the recurring cost.

Key features

LUNA combines tempo and instrument detection with voice control, stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, lyric transcription, and chord extraction. Some smart tools require Studio, so the breadth of the feature set should not be mistaken for access to every tool on Free. LUNA Play detects an instrument, sets levels, and suggests presets, making it oriented toward capturing an idea quickly rather than requiring a preset hunt first.

Any audio interface can be used, which keeps LUNA open to users without Universal Audio hardware. Apollo brings a deeper workflow: real-time tracking with UAD plug-ins, Unison preamp technology, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring. The software hosts VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments, while Studio adds API, Studer, and Ampex console or tape extensions, hardware inserts, and six ARA plug-ins. Those additions are most relevant to producers who specifically need those tools.

Setup has several account and licensing steps: installation and authorization require a free Universal Audio account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and a free iLok account. A license supports activation at up to three simultaneous locations, and an existing activation can be deauthorized to free a location. Sessions can move between macOS and Windows, but AU plug-ins will not load when a session is opened on Windows, a material constraint for cross-platform collaborators using that format.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
LUNA Free	0.00 USD per free	Unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape
LUNA Studio	199.00 USD per month	30 UAD plug-ins and instruments, six ARA plug-ins, console and tape extensions, advanced smart features, and hardware inserts
UAD Spark Studio	149.00 USD per year, billed annually	LUNA Studio included, 70 UAD plug-ins, and new plug-ins added regularly

Free is the practical choice for recording and mixing with unlimited tracks and a base set of plug-ins, without a paid commitment. LUNA Studio is a steep monthly step up, best reserved for users who need its extensions, hardware inserts, ARA plug-ins, or advanced smart tools. UAD Spark Studio is the lower-cost paid route for those who want Studio plus a larger plug-in collection; its annual billing is the key commitment. Both paid plans add more than the free tier, but Free gives up the named Studio production tools and Spark’s broader collection.

Platforms

LUNA supports macOS Big Sur 11 through Tahoe 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, and requires 600 MB of available system storage. The cross-platform session support is useful for teams or users switching operating systems, with the AU-on-Windows limitation worth checking before relying on an AU-based session. Universal Audio provides a Knowledge Base with an online manual and downloadable PDF manual.

Who it's for

LUNA is a strong fit for musicians who want a free DAW with unlimited tracks and built-in idea-capture tools, especially Apollo owners who can use the deeper tracking integration. It also suits producers willing to pay for the specific console, tape, ARA, hardware-insert, and UAD plug-in additions. It is less compelling for someone who needs to avoid multiple account and licensing components, or whose Windows sessions depend on AU plug-ins.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape, giving a substantial no-cost base for recording and production.
Pros: Any audio interface works, while Apollo owners gain real-time UAD tracking, Unison, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring.
Pros: LUNA supports both macOS and Windows sessions, with broad system-version coverage and modest storage needs.
Cons: Installation and authorization require separate UA and iLok accounts plus two management applications.
Cons: AU plug-ins do not load when a session is opened on Windows, which can disrupt a cross-platform workflow built around AU.
Cons: Studio costs 199.00 USD per month; users who only need the free recording feature set may not benefit enough from its extensions and extra tools.

Verdict

Choose LUNA if you want a free, unlimited-track DAW and value its built-in idea-capture tools, with particular appeal for Apollo owners. Its clearest reason to upgrade is access to Studio’s extensions, hardware inserts, and expanded plug-ins; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the monthly Studio price or a Windows workflow dependent on AU plug-ins.
