Overview

Turtl combines a personal notebook with shared Spaces, letting users organize material and grant collaborators permissions from read-only to full ownership. Notes can hold text, bookmarks, passwords, images, and files or documents, making it useful for more than conventional prose notes. Offline access broadens its usefulness when a connection is unavailable.

The app encrypts data on the device before it is sent, using keys derived from the user's email and password. Turtl is open source, and users can install its server to host their own data. Those are meaningful options for privacy-conscious users, though they do not remove the need to handle sharing securely.

Key features

Organization and writing

Full-text search and tag filtering help users retrieve material as a notebook grows. Markdown notes and TeX math rendering make Turtl suitable for formatted writing and mathematical notation as well as saved reference items. Its Chrome and Firefox bookmarking extensions and Android sharing support capture from those channels; it is a narrower fit for workflows that depend on other integrations.

Spaces and sharing

Users can choose collaborators for a Space and set their access level. Turtl generates a separate random key for each shared object, so a recipient can unlock the item shared with them rather than all of a user's content. However, Turtl warns that an email invitation sent without a separately communicated shared secret could expose a Space if intercepted. That caveat matters for sensitive material: invitation handling is part of the security decision, not an afterthought.

Attachments, backup and hosting

Photos, files, and documents can be attached to notes, and a full profile can be imported or exported for backup or transfer between servers. Self-hosting gives technically capable users control over where their data resides, while profile export helps avoid being locked to one server. Users who want a managed notebook without operating server software may prefer not to take on that hosting responsibility.

Privacy and compliance

Turtl says its security model encrypts data before it leaves the device. Its FAQ says it likely is not HIPAA compliant, citing the absence of access logs, fine-grained access controls, and physical access safeguards. Organizations with HIPAA obligations should choose a product that meets those requirements rather than treating Turtl's encryption as sufficient.

Pricing

Turtl uses a freemium model, with a free plan, paid plans from $3/mo, and a 30-day trial. The Basic plan has a 3-collaborator limit per Space and 50MB of storage. That can suit a small personal notebook or a modest shared collection, but the storage ceiling is a substantial constraint for users attaching many files.

Premium costs 3.00 USD per month, billed $3/mo, and includes 10GB of note data, up to 10 collaborators per Space, and community support. It fits individuals or small groups that need more room and broader collaboration. Business costs 8.00 USD per month, billed $8/mo, and raises the allowance to 50GB of note data and 50 collaborators per Space, with dedicated support; it is the more suitable tier for larger teams that need that support channel. Custom plans use custom pricing, with terms arranged by contacting Turtl.

Basic and Premium include community support, while Business includes dedicated support. The free plan's 50MB and three-person Space cap are the clearest trade-offs against paid tiers; choose based on storage and collaborator needs rather than assuming the free allowance will cover an attachment-heavy archive.

Platforms

Turtl supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and Chrome extension use. Offline access is supported. Chrome and Firefox bookmarking extensions are described, alongside Android sharing.

Who it's for

Turtl is a strong fit for individuals and small groups who want one place for varied private notes, searchable organization, and controlled sharing. It also suits users who value open-source software, offline access, or the ability to self-host. It is not the right choice for teams that need HIPAA compliance, rely on integrations beyond its described capture options, or cannot safely manage shared-space invitations.

Pros and cons

Pros

Varied note types: Text, bookmarks, passwords, images, and documents can live in one notebook.
Granular sharing: Space permissions range from read-only to full ownership, with separate keys for shared objects.
Data portability and hosting: Profile import/export and an installable open-source server give users options for backup and self-hosting.
Offline use: Notes remain useful without a network connection.

Cons

Invitation risk: An intercepted email invitation without a separately communicated secret can expose a shared Space.
Limited entry tier: Basic allows only 50MB and three collaborators per Space.
Not suited to HIPAA workflows: Turtl identifies missing safeguards that make compliance unlikely.
Narrower integration reach: The described integrations focus on Chrome and Firefox bookmarking and Android sharing.

Alternatives

For personal secure note-taking, compare Turtl with Secure Notes Apps; for a broader selection centered on note-taking, see Note-taking apps. Turtl is also categorized alongside Account-Based Marketing Software.

Abmatic AI is an alternative for account-based marketing, with a free tier that includes website visitor company reveals, one personalization campaign, basic intent signals, and community support. AdRoll offers a no-fee-to-start account-based retargeting plan where users pay for media. Hushly has a free plan with PageSherpa access and 50 starting credits. Ploy offers a free plan with daily credits, custom domains, Google Workspace integrations, and GitHub sync. Factors.ai is a paid option with a free plan and a Basic tier for up to 10,000 monthly tracked users, up to 3,000 identified companies per month, and five seats. Propensity is aimed at teams seeking account and contact-level website de-anonymization, intent data, unlimited campaigns and users, and Salesforce and HubSpot CRM integrations; its Essential plan is $2,000/mo. Metadata offers a custom-scoped proposal, while Folloze is another paid web-based alternative.

Verdict

Choose Turtl if you want a flexible notebook that combines on-device encryption, selective collaboration, offline access, and the option to self-host. Its appeal is strongest for privacy-minded individuals and small teams who can work within the Basic storage cap or justify a paid tier. Look elsewhere for HIPAA-regulated work, broader integrations, or sharing practices that cannot accommodate its invitation-security warning.
