Overview

Cryptee encrypts files on the device with AES-256 before upload, using keys it says it cannot access. Its software and cryptography are open source for independent review. The company also says it requires no personal information at signup, does not track or log activity, and serves no advertisements. Those choices make privacy central to the product rather than an optional extra.

Storage and writing tools live together: photos and videos sit alongside documents, journals, and notes. That breadth is useful if you want one encrypted home for both media and writing, but the smallest plan is too limited to treat as a lasting photo archive.

Key features

Photos supports hashtags, typo-tolerant search, EXIF data, RAW files, favorites, and encrypted sharing links. Ghost Albums and Ghost Folders add a concealment layer: selected folders disappear from the account view until their names are entered again. That may help keep sensitive folders out of casual view, but it is not a substitute for the underlying encryption.

The editor handles Markdown, tables, RTL languages, and KaTeX math, and can export encrypted PDFs. It also supports DOCX, PDF, and ODT files, as well as Evernote imports. Offline use is a practical advantage for writing without a connection; the trade-off is that the product is delivered as a progressive web app rather than through app stores.

Cryptee provides migration guides for Evernote, Bear Notes, iCloud Notes, Google Photos, and Amazon Photos. Its data is kept on its own servers and infrastructure in Europe, and the company is incorporated in Estonia. Help articles and forms cover questions, feedback, and bug reports.

Pricing

Plan	Price	Storage
Free	Free forever	100 MB
10 GB	€3/mo	10 GB
400 GB	€9/mo	400 GB
2000 GB	€27/mo	2000 GB

The free plan is enough to try the combined editor and storage, but 100 MB leaves little room for a photo collection. At €3/mo, 10 GB is a modest step up suited to notes and a limited selection of files. The €9/mo plan offers 400 GB for a substantial photo and video library; €27/mo raises the ceiling to 2000 GB for users with larger archives. All paid prices are monthly, and the free plan is free forever.

Platforms

Cryptee supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Desktop and mobile access uses a browser-based app that can be installed as a PWA, without app stores. That broad reach is useful across devices, though anyone who specifically wants a conventional app-store download should account for the browser-based delivery.

Who it's for

Cryptee is a strong fit for people who want encrypted photos and video alongside private notes and documents, and for users who value offline writing, open-source cryptography, or migration paths from popular note and photo services. It is less compelling for someone seeking a generous free photo archive: 100 MB is a tight cap, and substantial capacity begins at a monthly fee.

Pros and cons

Pros: On-device AES-256 encryption, open-source software and cryptography, and encrypted sharing links support a privacy-focused workflow.
Pros: Photo tools, a capable document editor, imports, and offline access bring varied personal files into one service.
Pros: The 400 GB plan costs €9/mo, offering a clear middle tier for a larger media collection.
Cons: The free plan's 100 MB is too small for most photo and video libraries.
Cons: Desktop and mobile access relies on browser-based PWA installation rather than app-store downloads.

Alternatives

Choose Ente Photos if photo storage is the priority: its free plan includes 10 GB, compared with Cryptee's 100 MB, though the supplied free-plan terms also cap it at one replica and 100 Locker items. For a broader secure-storage shortlist, see Secure Cloud Storage; for writing-first options, see Secure Notes Apps; for photo-focused services, browse Photo Storage Services.

Other options include Filen, Plient, Internxt Drive, PigCloud, Proton Drive, MEGA, and NordLocker.

Verdict

Choose Cryptee if you want private photo and video storage paired with an offline-capable encrypted editor and useful import routes. Its combination is the main reason to pick it; the 100 MB free cap is the main reason to look elsewhere, especially if you need a sizable library without paying.
