Overview

Profiles can switch on when an associated Linux or Windows application launches and restore settings when it exits. Manual profiles provide an override, taking precedence over automatic settings, though only one manual profile can be active at a time. Automatic profiles need a binary executable name, so scripts and interpreted-language applications cannot trigger them.

CoreCtrl is in maintenance mode, with development focused on bug fixes and upkeep rather than new features or hardware support. That makes it a better fit for someone whose current hardware and controls already meet their needs than for someone seeking a tool with a growing feature set.

Key features

AMD GPU controls

CoreCtrl exposes fan, frequency, and power controls, sensors, and hardware and software information for AMD GPUs. Custom voltage, fan-curve, power-limit, and tuning-profile controls give users substantial scope to tailor supported cards. The README says support extends through the RX 9000 series, although unresolved driver or firmware issues limit some series. Actual controls depend on the available hardware and Linux kernel version.

CPU controls and setup

CPU support is modest: users get a frequency-scaling governor control, a package maximum-frequency sensor, and CPU package information. It is useful alongside the GPU controls, but not a reason to choose CoreCtrl as a broad CPU-tuning tool. Full AMD GPU control with the amdgpu driver requires the boot parameter amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff and a reboot. CoreCtrl also uses a root-privileged helper; Polkit authorization can avoid repeated password prompts.

The project recommends installation through a distribution package manager and provides packages for Arch Linux, Fedora, Gentoo, openSUSE, Debian, and Ubuntu. This gives users of those distributions a direct installation route, while GPU functionality still depends on hardware and kernel support.

Pricing

CoreCtrl is free and open source. Its CoreCtrl plan costs 0.00 USD per free and covers the GNU/Linux application; no paid plans or free trial are offered. There is no paid tier to add capabilities, so users should choose it for the controls it provides rather than expect an upgrade path.

Platforms

CoreCtrl runs on Linux. Although profiles can be associated with Windows applications, that does not make CoreCtrl a Windows application.

Who it's for

CoreCtrl suits Linux users with supported AMD GPUs who want application-linked settings and control over fan behavior, frequencies, power, or voltage. It is less suitable for users who need extensive CPU tuning, depend on script-triggered profiles, or want planned new hardware coverage.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with substantial AMD GPU controls including fan curves, custom voltage, and power limits.
Pros: Automatic and manual profiles allow settings to follow applications or be overridden by the user.
Cons: CPU support is limited to a governor control, one sensor, and package information.
Cons: Automatic profiles do not support scripts or interpreted languages, and only one manual profile can be active.
Cons: Maintenance mode means no new features or hardware support are planned; some GPU series also face unresolved driver or firmware issues.

Alternatives

For a Windows option, ASUS GPU Tweak III is free and has no stated usage limits. Linux users looking specifically for NVIDIA GPU control can consider nvcontrol, free, MIT-licensed Linux software. LACT is another free Linux GPU configuration and monitoring tool.

TuxClocker is a free GNU/Linux alternative with hardware-specific GPU and CPU support. For newer AMD graphics cards on Windows, MoreClockTool is free and aimed at experienced users and evaluation, with overclocking at the user's risk. MSI Afterburner is a free option for GPU overclocking and undervolting, monitoring, custom fan control, and on-screen display. Green Curve is another free option for Linux and Windows.

Intel VTune Profiler is a free standalone tool or part of the Intel oneAPI Toolkit, with commercial and non-commercial use permitted and community support available. For category browsing, see GPU Overclocking Software, GPU Tuning Software, and PC Overclocking Software.

Verdict

Choose CoreCtrl if you use Linux with a supported AMD GPU and want rich controls tied to application profiles without paying for software. Look elsewhere if broad CPU tuning, script-based automation, or future hardware support is central to your decision.
