Overview

Planning Center brings together church tools for member records, worship, events, donations, groups, and church apps. It suits congregations looking to coordinate several ministry functions in one platform, though the cost of Services rises with the number of people who access it.

Its breadth is the main draw: churches can start with free product plans and add paid access as their needs grow. Churches focused on a single workflow may prefer a more specialized option.

Key features

People and ministry records

People combines membership information with attendance, giving, and volunteering activity. That shared record can help a church keep track of participation alongside its member data. The free People plan includes an unlimited database and reporting, making it a substantial starting point for recordkeeping.

Worship planning and volunteer coordination

Services brings worship planning together with volunteer scheduling, team communication, and rehearsal tools. Its plans include unlimited features, teams, service types, and plans; the price depends instead on how many people access the system. This structure suits churches that need broad Services functionality, but the access-based pricing makes the number of users an important budgeting consideration.

Connected tools and safeguards

Listed integrations include SongSelect, PraiseCharts, Checkr, Mailchimp, and Zapier, alongside third-party tools; an open API provides another route for connecting systems. Planning Center says it is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and PCI Level One compliant, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and uses a multilayered backup strategy.

Support is free for customers and noncustomers, with a stated response time of about one business hour on weekdays and weekend coverage for emergencies. Accounts continue working after exceeding a plan limit; if the organization exceeds it more than once, it receives an upgrade suggestion. That avoids an immediate interruption, though recurring overages may call for a plan change.

Pricing

Planning Center uses a freemium model: its pricing note says paid plans start at $5/mo, and a 30-day trial is available. Free options are split across products rather than presented as one all-inclusive tier:

Calendar: 0.00 USD per free for one room. The room cap makes this a limited fit for churches that need to coordinate multiple spaces.
People: 0.00 USD per free, with an unlimited database and reporting. This is the strongest free option for churches prioritizing member records.
Services: 0.00 USD per free, with five team members and 100MB of storage. Those caps make it a useful entry point, but churches needing more people or storage should account for paid access.

Services plans retain unlimited access to features, teams, service types, and plans, while pricing varies with the number of people accessing the system. Churches should therefore estimate their user count rather than assume the starting paid price will cover every team. The broader pricing note gives a 30-day trial, but does not define its product coverage or renewal terms.

Platforms

Planning Center supports web, iOS, Android, and an API. The Services mobile app works on iOS and Android phones and tablets, but not Windows devices. Churches relying on Windows tablets for worship teams should look elsewhere or plan to use another supported device.

Who it's for

Planning Center is aimed at churches of any size, from neighborhood congregations to multi-campus organizations. Its mix of people management, groups, event registration, child check-in, SMS messaging, and volunteer scheduling makes it most relevant to churches seeking several ministry workflows in one system. Smaller churches can start with separate free plans; organizations with more Services users should weigh the access-based pricing before expanding.

Pros and cons

Pro: People includes an unlimited database and reporting at no cost, a meaningful advantage for churches building a central membership record.
Pro: Services includes unlimited features, teams, service types, and plans, so its paid tiers are not described as limiting those functions.
Pro: Free customer and noncustomer support, with a stated weekday response time of about one business hour, gives churches a clear support channel.
Con: The free Services plan caps teams at five members and storage at 100MB, which may constrain wider use.
Con: Services pricing depends on the number of people accessing it, so growing participation can affect the bill.
Con: Services mobile support excludes Windows devices, limiting its fit for teams using Windows tablets.

Alternatives

For churches seeking alternatives, AltarDesk has a free plan for up to 15 people with 500 MB storage and a paid plan at 17.00 GBP per month for up to 75 people; it may suit a small congregation that values a stated people cap and storage allowance. POINT offers a free tier with unlimited volunteers and admins plus signups, scheduling, event, contact, and group management, making it worth considering when volunteer coordination is the priority. VolunteerBadge provides free management tools with unlimited admin users, while background checks cost extra, so it may be a better fit when those tools are the focus.

VolunteerReady has a free plan with no volunteer, opportunity, or seat cap, which could suit organizations prioritizing uncapped volunteer management. AlignMint is web-only and free for eligible organizations with up to $100K in annual donations, one user, and 10 GB storage; it is a narrower option for eligible groups centered on donations. ChurchSoftware.com Groups offers a free-forever church plan for eligible 501(c)(3) organizations, making it an option for eligible churches seeking core church management tools without a trial. Faith Teams has a free account for up to 100 active people, so it may suit churches whose active roster fits that cap. GLAD has a web-only free Starter plan for up to 50 people, with 10 AI credits per month, 500 MB storage, one location or floor plan, a 1% giving fee, and a subdomain; it may suit users for whom those particular limits work.

Verdict

Choose Planning Center if your church wants connected tools for records, worship planning, volunteer scheduling, and other ministry operations, with meaningful free entry points and Services plans that keep features and teams unlimited. Look elsewhere if Windows compatibility is essential or if user-count-based Services pricing makes budgeting difficult.
