Overview

Duo Mobile is an authentication app for approving sign-ins and generating passcodes, with organizational controls that extend beyond the phone. It suits teams protecting access across a mix of apps and infrastructure; personal users who only want a standalone code generator may find its managed-account focus unnecessary. Its main appeal is breadth: mobile authentication sits alongside integration and policy options for administrators.

Key features

Duo Push lets users approve or deny a login with a tap, while time-based passcodes offer a code-entry alternative. The iOS and Android apps also support third-party TOTP accounts, which can make Duo Mobile useful alongside other authenticator entries. Biometrics are supported, as are platform authenticators, passkeys, FIDO2 security keys and Duo Push for passwordless sign-in. That range gives organizations options beyond push alone, although the app’s strongest capabilities depend on an organization configuring Duo.

Duo Restore backs up and restores Duo-protected accounts when users move to a new Android or iOS device. Security Checkup sends mobile-device security scores through notifications. These features address continuity and device awareness, but users needing enrollment, activation, reactivation or troubleshooting help must contact their organization’s Duo administrator.

Administrators can connect Duo to legacy infrastructure, major platforms, custom apps, VPNs, SaaS tools and offline devices. Integration methods include RADIUS, SAML/OIDC, Duo Authentication Proxy and direct API integrations. Adaptive policies can consider role, location, application, network and device health, giving teams a way to tailor access decisions rather than apply one rule to everyone. Duo describes a security design using asymmetric cryptography, private keys held on users’ devices in a tamper-proof secure element, and no password storage. It supports or aligns with a range of requirements including PCI-DSS 4.0, NIST 800-63 and 800-171, GDPR, HIPAA and PIPEDA.

Pricing

Duo is freemium, with a 30-day trial and paid plans from $3/user/mo. Duo Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, and supports 10 users. That makes it a practical starting point for a small group, but the user cap makes it unsuitable as a no-cost option for larger teams.

Duo Essentials costs 3.00 USD per month and adds Duo Directory, phishing-resistant MFA, passwordless authentication, SSO, Trusted Endpoints and unlimited applications. It is the entry paid tier for teams needing broad app coverage and core access controls. Duo Advantage costs 6.00 USD per month, adding Cisco Identity Intelligence, Duo Passport, session theft protection, Active Directory Defense and risk-based authentication; it suits organizations that need those additional identity and risk protections. Duo Premier costs 9.00 USD per month and adds Zero Trust access, VPN-less remote access and complete device trust with endpoint protection check, making it the tier for teams seeking those access and endpoint controls. The published plan prices do not state a billing term or seat allowance, so confirm those terms before selecting a tier.

Platforms

Duo Mobile supports Android and iOS phones and tablets, as well as many smart watches. The wider integration footprint spans infrastructure and application types, while the mobile app itself is limited to Apple and Google mobile platforms.

Who it's for

Duo Mobile is a strong fit for organizations that need mobile MFA across varied environments and want policy controls based on user and device context. Advanced administration, SSO, directory synchronization and audit logs reinforce its team-oriented role. A person looking only for personal TOTP codes may prefer a simpler authenticator; those who need help managing their Duo enrollment should expect to work through an organizational administrator.

Pros and cons

Pros: Push, passcodes, third-party TOTP and passwordless methods provide several authentication paths.
Pros: Broad integration methods and adaptive policies suit organizations with varied apps and infrastructure.
Pros: Duo Restore supports account migration between iOS and Android devices.
Cons: The free tier is capped at 10 users, limiting its usefulness for larger teams.
Cons: End-user enrollment and troubleshooting depend on the organization’s Duo administrator.
Cons: The plan prices lack a stated billing term and seat allowance, so buyers should confirm those commercial terms.

Alternatives

For teams comparing identity threat detection options, Identity Threat Detection and Response Software is a useful category to explore. Bitdefender Total Security is a paid multi-platform security product with a free plan and trial; its Total Security Individual plan is 59.99 USD per year for the first year, plus applicable sales tax, for 5 devices and 1 account. Consider it instead when that device-and-account package is a closer fit than Duo’s organizational MFA focus. Palo Alto Networks Cortex Cloud API Security is a paid option for API, Linux and web platforms. Varonis Data Discovery and Classification is a paid option for Linux, self-hosted and web environments, with quote-based pricing. AuthMind Advanced Identity Threat Detection and Response is a paid self-hosted and web option. Netwrix Password Secure is a paid option without a free plan; its self-service pricing starts at 60.00 USD per year with a one-year minimum commitment. Proofpoint Email DLP and Encryption is a paid option without a free plan for Android, iOS, web and Windows. Vectra AI Identity Threat Detection and Response is a paid API and web option with a free trial and contact-for-pricing model. Cayosoft Administrator is a freemium product with a free trial, available across Android, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms.

Verdict

Choose Duo Mobile if your organization needs flexible mobile approvals and passcodes tied to broad integrations and context-aware access policies. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of authentication methods and administrative reach; look elsewhere if you want a personal-only authenticator or need end-user support that does not run through an organization’s administrator.
