Overview

Founded in 2015, CodeSignal spans pre-hire assessment, AI-led and live interviews, skills development, and workforce insights. Its assessments simulate real work and job requirements, while AI Interviewer agents adapt questions and return structured results. Live Tech Interviews combine collaborative coding with candidate-interviewer communication. This breadth can serve several stages of hiring and development; it is less compelling for teams that only need occasional coding tests.

Skills validation, analytics, and benchmarking are intended to help organizations identify strengths and gaps. Assessment types include skills, cognitive, behavioral, and job-fit measures. Custom assessments, API access, proctoring, and advanced reporting extend the platform beyond a basic test library.

Key features

Individuals can use Cosmo, personalized paths, bite-sized modules, and a skills profile for free. Cosmo+ keeps the tutor, paths, and practice-based learning, but costs $24.99 per month; it is a paid step for learners who want those tools without an organizational plan.

Build includes AI proctoring and ID verification, while Pro adds advanced fraud prevention and role-based access controls. That distinction matters for employers: Build may suit routine screening, but organizations with stricter identity, access, or integrity requirements should assess whether Pro is necessary.

Integrations include Greenhouse, Ashby, Workday, Absorb LMS, Docebo, Okta, and Slack. CodeSignal says it is hosted on AWS and undergoes an annual independent SOC 2 examination. These provisions can matter to organizations connecting hiring or learning systems and assessing security requirements.

Pricing

CodeSignal uses a freemium model. Individuals is free and includes Cosmo, personalized skills paths, practice-based learning, bite-sized modules, and a skills profile. It provides a no-cost route to practice, but does not include the additional employer-focused assessment and interview features in paid organization plans.

Cosmo+ costs $24.99 per month for individuals and includes Cosmo, personalized skills paths, and practice-based learning. It is a narrower paid option than an organization plan, and its stated features do not include the free plan’s bite-sized modules or skills profile.

Build costs $99.00 per month when billed monthly, with 5 monthly credits. It includes Universal and Core Tech Assessments, access to 2,000 questions, AI proctoring, and ID verification. For teams seeking technical assessment and verification, the question bank is substantial, but five credits a month may constrain hiring volume. Build also offers weekday 9–5 PT email support.

Grow costs $599.00 per month when billed monthly, with 35 monthly credits. It adds Go-To-Market Assessments, Sales, CS, and Marketing AI Interviewers, and basic ATS integrations. The higher allowance and nontechnical hiring coverage suit organizations assessing more roles, though its support is still weekday 9–5 PT email support.

Pro has custom pricing and credits based on need. It includes all assessments and AI Interviewers, advanced fraud prevention and RBAC, enterprise ATS integrations, a dedicated CSM, and QBRs, with 24/7/365 email support. It is the plan for organizations needing the broadest scope and service; custom pricing makes it harder to compare directly with fixed monthly plans.

The pricing note says paid plans start at $79/mo (annual), while Build is shown at $99.00 per month when billed monthly. Build also has 60 annual credits when billed annually, compared with 5 monthly credits when billed monthly. Annual billing therefore changes the credit allowance; teams should compare that quota and term with their expected assessment volume.

Platforms

CodeSignal supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. Mobile apps extend access beyond browsers, while API availability may suit organizations integrating the platform into their systems.

Who it's for

CodeSignal is a strong fit for organizations that hire, assess, and develop skills across technical and nontechnical roles, particularly when they value structured AI interviews, analytics, benchmarking, or connections to existing HR and learning tools. Individual learners get a free practice option, with Cosmo+ as a paid upgrade. Teams with low hiring volume or only a narrow testing need may find the platform’s wider scope and plan credits unnecessary.

Pros and cons

Pros: Assessments, AI and live interviews, and skills development sit in one platform, supporting more than candidate screening alone.
Pros: Build and Grow state monthly credit allowances, and the plans differentiate technical assessment from broader go-to-market hiring.
Pros: Pro includes enterprise security controls, dedicated account support, and 24/7/365 email support for organizations that need them.
Cons: Build’s five monthly credits may be limiting for frequent assessment use; the annual allowance is 60 credits.
Cons: Pro has custom pricing, making costs less predictable than the fixed monthly Build and Grow plans.
Cons: Build and Grow support is limited to weekday 9–5 PT email, unlike Pro’s round-the-clock coverage.

Alternatives

For a wider comparison, browse Coding Assessment Platforms, Talent Assessment Software, Pre-Employment Assessment Software, Coding Challenge Platforms, or Assessment Software.

HackerEarth Assessments offers a free plan with five test invites, three interview invites, and two admins; consider it if those caps suit your needs. HackerRank has a Starter plan at $165.00 per month, billed $1,990 annually, for one user and 120 attempts a year; it may suit a buyer comparing a fixed annual attempt allowance. CoderScreen offers a free Basic plan with three live interviews and five assessment invites renewing monthly, for one team member. Hirevoult charges $6.00 per assessment for its Assessment Only plan, making it an option to consider when a per-assessment price fits better. Savyre has a free IDE-extension plan with limited assessment invites. TalentsAccess offers a free Starter plan with up to 50 assessments per month, coding challenges in 40+ languages, and basic webcam AI proctoring. Geektastic and CodeInterview are other freemium options to compare.

Verdict

Choose CodeSignal if your organization wants assessments, interviews, and skills development in one platform, especially across multiple role types. Its main advantage is that breadth, backed by analytics and integrations; the main reasons to look elsewhere are limited Build credits and custom Pro pricing.
