Overview

Define nodes, links, and lab settings in topology files, then use the CLI to deploy, destroy, save, inspect, or graph the lab. Keeping that setup in code helps teams recreate environments and use them in CI workflows, including GitLab CI and GitHub Actions. Containerlab can also be paired with telemetry stacks to validate collection, transport, and visualization workflows.

This is lab orchestration, not a general-purpose network management interface. Its self-hosted approach gives engineers control over their lab environment, but also means they must provide and administer the Linux host and Docker environment it depends on.

Key features

Topology-as-code lifecycle: Declarative files define the lab, while a consistent set of commands manages it from deployment through inspection and teardown. That makes repeatable lab setups a better fit than manually assembled environments, particularly when configurations need to be exercised in CI.

Wide node selection: Containerlab supports container and VM-based network operating systems from Nokia, Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and other vendors and projects. The range includes Nokia SR Linux, SR OS, and SR-SIM; Cisco XRd, XRv, XRv9k, Nexus 9000v, and other listed platforms; Juniper cRPD, cSRX, vMX, vQFX, vSRX, and vJunos; as well as SONiC, Cumulus VX, VyOS, FRR, VPP, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OpenWRT, Linux containers, and generic VMs. This breadth is valuable for mixed-vendor labs, though the supported node types do not remove the need to supply the underlying host and Docker setup.

Extensions to the core workflow: vrnetlab and boxen can launch VM-based routers, while Clabernetes can run Containerlab-style topologies on Kubernetes. A VS Code extension, desktop app, and web app provide graphical options; the desktop and web clients connect to a reachable clab-api-server. That server exposes lab lifecycle, file, terminal, capture, image, and inspection operations on the Linux host.

Host access and security: The documented prerequisites include a Linux server or VM, Docker, and sudo privileges to run Containerlab. An installer option configures sudo-less operation using a SUID binary and the clab_admins group, whose members effectively receive root-level privileges. That can change how users invoke the tool, but it is not a way to avoid treating access to the lab host as a security-sensitive permission.

Pricing

Containerlab is open source under the BSD-3-Clause license and is free to use. Its Containerlab plan costs 0.00 USD per free and requires a Linux server or VM and Docker; sudo privileges are required for some operations. There is no separate paid tier or free trial in this model. The cost advantage is clear for teams able to provide their own infrastructure, while the host and privilege requirements remain operational costs in time and administration.

Platforms

Containerlab is self-hosted and requires a Linux server or VM with Docker. The desktop and web GUI options connect to a reachable clab-api-server on the Linux host. Although platform categories include API, macOS, web, and Windows, the documented runtime prerequisites are Linux and Docker; those categories should not be taken to mean the lab itself runs natively across all of them.

Who it's for

Containerlab is best suited to network engineers and teams building repeatable, code-defined labs for configuration work, network testing, CI workflows, or telemetry validation. It is especially compelling when a lab needs nodes from several vendors or projects. It is a weaker fit for users who need a managed service, cannot provide Linux and Docker, or want network administration without operating a lab host.

Pros and cons

Pro: Topology files and lifecycle commands make labs reproducible, including when used in CI.
Pro: Support for a broad mix of container and VM-based network operating systems enables varied lab designs.
Pro: Free, open-source licensing avoids a software subscription for teams that can self-host.
Con: A Linux host or VM and Docker are prerequisites, so users without that environment cannot run the documented setup.
Con: Some operations require sudo, and the sudo-less configuration grants members of clab_admins effective root-level privileges.
Con: The desktop and web GUI depend on a reachable clab-api-server, adding a host-side service to the graphical workflow.

Alternatives

Choose Cisco pyATS if a free, Apache 2.0-licensed testing framework on Linux, macOS, or self-hosted systems better suits the job than topology orchestration. ManageEngine Network Configuration Manager is an alternative for network configuration management across web, mobile, desktop, and self-hosted platforms; its free edition covers 2 devices, while the Professional Edition is 238.00 USD per year.

Nautobot may suit users seeking a self-managed network automation platform: its free Community plan is intended for exploration, initial workflows, and limited production deployments. ONAP is another free, open-source platform for readers comparing self-hosted API and web options. OpenDaylight is a free open-source SDN platform, distributed as tar or zip downloads and Docker images.

Arista NG Firewall is a web-based alternative with a free tier for basic security and connectivity features. For Python-based device access rather than lab orchestration, consider NAPALM, an open-source library whose device and driver support varies, or Netmiko, an open-source Python library.

Browse Network Automation Software and Network Simulation Software for more options in those categories.

Verdict

Choose Containerlab if you need a free, code-defined way to build repeatable network labs across a broad range of container and VM-based systems, and can run them on Linux with Docker. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of topology-driven lifecycle management and broad node support. Look elsewhere if the host requirements, privileged operations, or responsibility for self-hosting outweigh that flexibility.
