Overview

The service handles promotional campaigns, transactional texts such as reminders and delivery updates, and one-time-password verification. Its API can send and manage SMS, check sending costs, and show message history; delivery status, webhooks, and two-way messaging support follow-up and operational tracking. Inbound replies are free, a useful point for teams expecting customers to respond.

Recurring workflows can use no-code integrations or full-code builds, so ClickSend can serve both operations teams and developers. One important constraint: ClickSend is pausing URL-containing SMS for new customers unless support approves it. Teams whose messages rely on links should settle that issue before choosing the service.

Key features

API and developer tools: SDKs cover PHP, Node.js, Ruby, Swift, Objective-C, Python, C#, Java, Go, and Perl. Along with message history and cost checks, this gives developers a broad set of starting points for integrating SMS into existing systems.
Workflow integrations: Listed connections include Zapier, Microsoft Power Automate, Make, GoHighLevel, ActiveCampaign, Salesforce, Bubble.io, and IFTTT. This is a practical strength for teams that want recurring messages triggered by other business tools rather than built as a standalone process.
Security and support: ClickSend says connections use TLS 1.2 with AES ciphers and sensitive data is encrypted at rest and in transit. API keys are managed in the web portal; staff access uses role-based controls and multi-factor authentication. The SMS page advertises human-staffed chat support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, plus a 99.95% uptime SLA guarantee.
Message costs and restrictions: Carrier fees may apply, and messages longer than 160 characters are billed as multiple parts. Free inbound replies help with conversational use, but teams should account for those additional outbound costs and the URL approval rule.

Pricing

ClickSend has no free plan, but offers a 14-day trial and pay-as-you-go billing. The four SMS tiers all show 0.00 USD per free, with top-ups rather than a subscription: Boost starts at $20 and has no subscription; Growth starts at $500 and saves 7%; Scale starts at $3,000 and saves 14%; Enterprise starts at $10,000 and saves 21%.

Boost is the least demanding entry point for low-volume use, while Growth, Scale, and Enterprise trade increasingly large upfront top-ups for higher stated savings. Those minimums make the upper tiers a poor fit for teams that need occasional texts or want to limit prepaid commitment. No seat or message quota is given for these tiers. Carrier fees and multiple message parts for texts over 160 characters can also affect spend.

Platforms

ClickSend supports API, iOS, macOS, and web platforms. The mix suits teams building direct integrations as well as users who want browser access or mobile and desktop access.

Who it's for

ClickSend is a strong fit for businesses sending recurring promotional or operational texts, especially when replies, delivery tracking, webhooks, or integrations matter. Developers benefit from the range of SDKs, while teams without a full engineering build can use workflow integrations. It is less suitable for link-dependent messaging until URL approval is resolved, or for buyers unwilling to make the minimum top-up.

Pros and cons

Pros

Flexible workflow options: No-code integrations and SDKs across ten programming languages accommodate different levels of technical capacity.
Operational messaging coverage: API management, history, cost checks, delivery status, webhooks, and two-way replies address more than one-way campaign sending.
Free inbound replies: This supports conversational use without a separate charge for incoming SMS replies.
Year-round human chat: The advertised 24/365 chat and 99.95% uptime SLA are useful assurances for business messaging operations.

Cons

High entry commitments beyond Boost: Growth, Scale, and Enterprise require top-ups of $500, $3,000, and $10,000, respectively.
Uncertain final message cost: Carrier fees may apply, and long texts incur multiple message-part charges.
URL approval hurdle: New customers cannot send SMS containing URLs unless support approves it.
No ongoing free plan: The 14-day trial offers a short evaluation window, not a continuing free allowance.

Alternatives

Compare transactional SMS software if you want to review services across the category.

Mailchimp is the better fit for an email-led audience: its free plan includes 250 contacts, 500 emails per month, 250 per day, one audience, and one seat.
Bandwidth Messaging API is worth comparing for U.S. outbound SMS pricing: its listed 10DLC outbound plan is 0.00 USD per message, while short-code outbound is 0.01 USD per message.
Telnyx SMS API is another paid API option with published pay-as-you-go rates before volume tiers; carrier passthrough and taxes vary.
Bird Verify may suit verification-focused buyers: verification is included, with charges for the channel messages sent.
Clickatell SMS API offers prepaid outgoing messages whose prices vary by destination and message type.
Gupshup is another messaging option; its listed fee is 0.001 USD per message, with WhatsApp fees billed at actuals.
Infobip SMS API offers pay-as-you-go messaging with country- and network-dependent rates and volume discounts for large campaigns.
Telnyx Text-to-Speech API is the alternative to consider when text-to-speech, rather than SMS, is the requirement.

Verdict

Choose ClickSend if your business needs recurring SMS across campaigns, alerts, or verification flows and values multiple integration routes, delivery tracking, and two-way replies. Its main advantage is the breadth of ways to build and manage messaging; its main drawbacks are top-up commitments, variable carrier and message-part costs, and URL approval for new customers.
