Overview

Checkmk combines server, service and VM monitoring with cloud and network coverage. Its server checks span web, mail and database systems, while automatic discovery and network mapping help teams build visibility across an infrastructure. That range is useful when a single monitoring approach would leave gaps, though the breadth may be unnecessary for organizations seeking only a narrow endpoint or help-desk tool.

Deployment can be on customer hardware or virtualized, with packages for major Linux distributions, Docker and a Virtual Appliance. One instance can monitor thousands of servers, and distributed monitoring supports horizontal growth. Community, however, is aimed at small infrastructures and scales to approximately 100 hosts, so larger deployments should assess paid plans.

Key features

Multiple collection methods: Native agents support Windows, Linux and other operating systems; agentless SNMP and TCP/UDP monitoring suit systems where installing an agent is impractical. API-based checks using HTTP/XML, SSH or TELNET add options for mixed environments.
Server and network monitoring: More than 2,000 smart checks, automatic discovery and network mapping cover web, mail and database servers. This is a substantial starting toolkit for teams responsible for several infrastructure layers.
Cloud coverage: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform monitoring includes automatic detection of cloud components and Quick Setup, reducing the effort of bringing those environments into the same monitoring scope.
Scale and automation: A single instance can monitor thousands of servers, with distributed monitoring for horizontal scaling. Community includes more than 2,000 built-in integrations and supports REST APIs and custom automation scripts.
Security and support options: Ultimate provides zero-inbound, fully encrypted monitoring through push agents and Checkmk Relay. The Trust Center lists ISO 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type I, GDPR, SIG, EU AI Act and DORA badges. Pro support runs 8h x 5d; Ultimate provides 10h x 5d, with an option to upgrade to 24h x 5d.

Pricing

Community is free forever and includes more than 2,000 pre-built integrations, community support and a limit of approximately 100 hosts. It is the sensible entry point for smaller environments, but its host scope and community-only support make it a less suitable basis for a large or support-dependent operation.

Pro starts at $275/month, billed annually, with pricing as low as ~$2.75/host per month. It is equivalent to ~3,000 services and includes 8h x 5d professional support, making it a fit for teams that need formal help and more service capacity. Ultimate starts at $400/month, billed annually, as low as ~$4.00/host per month, also equivalent to ~3,000 services; it adds 10h x 5d professional support and the option to upgrade to 24h x 5d. Its zero-inbound encrypted monitoring is relevant where that security architecture matters, but it costs more than Pro.

Cloud is $290/month with monthly billing, priced at ~$8.70/host per month for 1K–50K services, with 99.5% availability. Its monthly term may suit teams preferring monthly billing, while the stated service range and availability provide useful planning parameters. Synthetic Monitoring costs $0.00/test, with 3 free tests, and is available with Pro and Ultimate; it is an add-on capability rather than a standalone plan. The overall pricing note gives paid plans from €190/mo (annual), and a 30-day trial is available.

Platforms

Checkmk supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Combined with hybrid deployment and multiple-OS coverage, that makes it relevant to teams monitoring infrastructure across operating systems and hosting arrangements.

Who it's for

Checkmk is best suited to infrastructure teams managing mixed server, cloud and network environments that need flexible monitoring methods and room to scale. Community fits smaller installations willing to rely on community support; Pro or Ultimate make more sense when professional support is a requirement. It is less compelling for a team that needs only endpoint management or service-desk workflows rather than infrastructure monitoring.

Pros and cons

Pro: Agents, agentless checks and API-based monitoring accommodate varied systems and constraints.
Pro: Cloud monitoring, discovery, network mapping and thousands of integrations cover several infrastructure layers in one product.
Pro: Distributed monitoring supports growth beyond a single instance's deployment footprint.
Con: Community is capped at approximately 100 hosts and includes community support, limiting its fit for larger or support-critical environments.
Con: Professional support and larger service capacity sit in paid plans, with annual billing for Pro and Ultimate.

Alternatives

For broader infrastructure monitoring options, compare Infrastructure Monitoring, Cloud Monitoring and Metrics Monitoring Tools. Teams focused on hardware or network performance can also browse Hardware Monitoring Software and Network Performance Monitoring Software; managed service providers can consult Managed Service Provider Software.

Breeze is a freemium alternative with a forever-free self-hosted Community plan offering unlimited devices and all 64 modules, but it requires users to bring their own Anthropic key. ManageEngine Endpoint Central may fit teams focused on endpoint management, with a free edition for 25 endpoints or a Professional on-premises annual option at $795.00 USD per year for 50 endpoints and one technician. SherpaDesk offers a free Single Agent plan for one agent and a $45.00 USD per month Base Camp plan with multiple technicians, making it an alternative for teams whose needs center on a help desk.

Tactical RMM offers a self-hosted Tier 1 Starter plan at $55.00 USD per month for 0 to 199 endpoints, with unlimited technicians and community support; consider it when that endpoint scope and self-hosted approach fit better. Datto Endpoint Backup for Windows uses consumption-based pricing for storage used, so it is a different option for readers seeking endpoint backup rather than broad infrastructure monitoring. ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus has a Standard plan at $13.00 USD per month for IT help desk and a Professional plan at $27.00 USD per month for IT help desk and asset management; choose it when those service-desk functions are the priority. ITarian Remote Desktop is a free option for readers seeking remote desktop software. Atera is a paid alternative with a free trial, unlimited endpoints on its Pro plan and one month of audit-log retention.

Verdict

Choose Checkmk if you need broad monitoring across servers, cloud, networks and containers, with collection methods suited to mixed infrastructure and a path from a small free deployment to distributed scale. The main reason to look elsewhere is if your need is narrower—such as endpoint management, backup or service-desk work—or if Community's approximately 100-host scope and community support do not meet your operational requirements.
