Overview

Middleware is an observability platform for teams that want infrastructure, application, and user-experience monitoring in one product range. Its breadth is the main draw; teams with narrow monitoring needs may find more coverage than they need.

It combines monitoring signals with OpsAI tools for issue detection and investigation. The trade-off is that free usage is capped and data retention is short, so teams should assess expected volume and retention needs before settling on a plan.

Key features

Broad observability coverage

Middleware spans infrastructure monitoring, logs, APM, metrics, distributed tracing, database monitoring, RUM, synthetic monitoring, browser testing, and LLM observability. Transaction tracing, dependency mapping, and log correlation add ways to connect activity across components. That breadth suits teams trying to bring several observability needs together; a team seeking only one monitoring function may have little reason to choose a platform with this range.

Issue investigation and integrations

OpsAI includes root cause analysis, automatic issue detection, faster issue solving, and automatic PR generation. These capabilities target investigation and follow-up as well as monitoring, which may be useful to teams looking to streamline incident work. Middleware also advertises more than 450 built-in integrations across areas including cloud, containers, databases, infrastructure, networking, and telemetry. A Public API is documented for teams that need API access.

Security and deployment

Middleware describes its deployment model as hybrid. It says customer data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2+ and at rest with AES-256, and that it conducts regular penetration testing and vulnerability assessments. Its stated safeguards also include network firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, and traffic filtering.

Pricing

Middleware has a free plan, usage-based paid pricing, and a custom-priced BYOC option. A 14-day trial is offered. The free tier gives unlimited users, community-based support, and up to 100GB of data, 1k RUM sessions, 20k synthetic checks, 10 browser test runs, and 2 million OpsAI tokens. Its 14-day retention is the key constraint for teams that need to investigate older events.

Pay As You Go costs 0.30 USD per month and charges only for usage. RUM sessions cost $1 per 1K, synthetic checks $1 per 5K, and browser test runs $10 per 1K. The plan has default 30-day retention, SSO and security features, and a dedicated Slack or MS Teams channel. Compared with Free Forever, it offers longer retention and paid usage rather than the stated free-tier caps; variable charges mean teams should account for their usage. Accounts can be cancelled anytime, and data is retained for 30 days after cancellation for download.

BYOC has custom pricing, with volume and multi-year contract discounts, custom data retention, bring-your-own-cloud deployment, 24x7 support, and a dedicated account team. It is aimed at organizations needing those deployment and support arrangements, rather than teams seeking a fixed public price.

Platforms

Middleware supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and web, and also lists API support. Its hybrid deployment model offers another option for organizations balancing cloud and other infrastructure needs.

Who it's for

Middleware is best suited to organizations that want a wide monitoring scope, from infrastructure and databases through application performance and real-user activity, with investigation capabilities alongside it. The free tier can suit an early evaluation or modest usage, while its per-use billing and BYOC option address different scaling and deployment needs. Teams with strict long-term retention requirements should weigh the free tier's 14-day window, and buyers seeking a single-purpose tool may prefer a narrower fit.

Pros and cons

Broad coverage: Infrastructure, APM, logs, tracing, RUM, synthetic monitoring, browser testing, and LLM observability sit within one product range.
Generous free-tier user access: Unlimited users avoid a seat cap, though data, session, check, test-run, token, and retention limits still apply.
Substantial integration breadth: More than 450 built-in integrations can help teams connect varied monitoring environments.
Free-tier retention is brief: Fourteen days may not suit investigations that need a longer history.
Usage charges can vary: RUM, synthetic checks, and browser testing have separate rates, so costs depend on activity.
BYOC price is custom: Teams must seek a tailored arrangement rather than compare it against a published fixed price.

Alternatives

Consider Elastic Observability if you want an alternative with a free plan and usage-based serverless pricing for logs and traces, starting at $0.09/.

Grafana Cloud Application Observability may suit teams comparing a free allowance of 2,232 host hours with a Pro plan priced at $0.025 per host hour and a $19 monthly platform fee.

New Relic Kubernetes Monitoring is worth considering for a Kubernetes-focused option with a free data-ingest allowance and a Pro annual commitment at 349.00 USD per year.

Uptrace offers a free cloud allowance of 50 GB per month, then $0.075 per GB, which may appeal to teams comparing volume-based cloud pricing.

groundcover is another freemium option, with a free plan that includes 12-hour retention and BYOC.

Honeycomb may fit teams evaluating event and metrics allowances, with its free plan covering up to 20M events per month and 100M metrics data points per month.

KloudMate offers a free plan with stated monthly log and trace quotas and seven-day retention, useful for comparing a more limited free-tier window.

SigNoz is an alternative to consider if you are comparing a self-hosted community option.

Verdict

Choose Middleware if your organization wants broad observability coverage, extensive integrations, and issue-investigation capabilities under one umbrella. Its free plan lowers the barrier to trying that range, but the retention window and usage quotas are real constraints. Look elsewhere if you need longer history on a free tier, a narrowly focused monitoring tool, or a fixed price that is easier to forecast.
