Overview

Ceph is open-source software for building distributed storage across object, block, and file workloads. It is best suited to organizations with infrastructure staff who can operate storage on their own hardware. The breadth is a real advantage, but Ceph is a storage platform to run, not a managed service to hand off.

Founded in 2006, the project is stewarded by the Ceph Foundation under the Linux Foundation. Most of Ceph is dual-licensed under LGPL 2.1 or 3.0; some bundled components use other free software licenses.

Key features

Ceph brings three storage types into one system, which can simplify infrastructure for teams with mixed workloads. That consolidation comes with responsibility for hardware, deployment, and cluster operations.

Object storage: RGW supports the S3 API and Swift-compatible applications. Versioning, lifecycle rules, immutability, and cross-region replication make it a candidate for teams that need object storage with familiar application interfaces and data controls.
Block storage: RBD provides thin-provisioned disk images, snapshots, writable clones, and asynchronous mirroring to remote Ceph clusters. Integrations include Kubernetes, QEMU, libvirt, OpenStack, Nomad, and CloudStack, giving infrastructure teams options across virtualization and orchestration environments. Block storage does require a running Ceph cluster.
File storage: CephFS is a POSIX-compliant distributed filesystem with snapshots, quotas, and multi-cluster mirroring. Its metadata servers can scale to support higher-throughput workloads, making it relevant where shared file access and throughput matter.
Resilience: Ceph can replicate data across devices, racks, and geographic locations, then redistribute it after hardware or connectivity failures. This supports resilient designs, but does not remove the need to plan and operate the underlying cluster.
Kubernetes: The project recommends Rook to deploy Ceph in Kubernetes or connect an existing cluster; the Ceph CSI driver can provision block and file volumes. This is a strong fit for Kubernetes infrastructure teams, not a substitute for cluster administration.

Pricing

Ceph is free open-source software. The Ceph plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the distributed storage software; block storage requires a running Ceph cluster. There is no free trial because the software itself is free. The cost tradeoff is operational: organizations choose and manage the commodity hardware and cluster.

Platforms

Ceph supports API use, Linux, Windows, and self-hosted deployment. Installation options include packages, container images, GitHub source clones, and tarballs. For cephadm, the requirements include Python 3, systemd, and Podman or Docker. Production guidance calls for at least three monitors, two managers, and three OSDs, with at least 10 Gb/s networking between hosts; those requirements make it a more substantial undertaking than a lightweight file server.

For release planning, Ceph publishes a stable release each year, supports each release series for approximately 24 months, and issues point releases every 4 to 6 weeks. Security vulnerabilities can be reported to the project's closed security mailing list at security@ceph.io. For other help, the project directs users to documentation, the ceph-users mailing list, community channels, and its bug tracker.

Who it's for

Ceph is aimed at SMEs, global organizations, academic institutions, startups, and developers; its users also include businesses, cloud providers, universities, and research institutions. It makes the most sense for teams that need multiple storage types, control over their hardware, and the capacity to maintain distributed infrastructure. Organizations looking for managed storage or without staff to handle cluster operations should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Object, block, and file storage share one system, which can reduce the need to assemble separate storage products for different workloads.
Pro: Replication across devices, racks, and locations, plus recovery redistribution after failures, gives operators tools for resilient deployments.
Pro: S3 and Swift compatibility, broad block integrations, and Kubernetes support help connect Ceph to established applications and infrastructure.
Con: Organizations must select and manage hardware and operate the cluster themselves; production guidance includes multiple monitors, managers, OSDs, and fast host networking.
Con: Block storage is not standalone: it depends on a running Ceph cluster.
Con: Support routes center on documentation, community channels, mailing lists, and a bug tracker, so teams seeking a managed operational experience may prefer another approach.

Alternatives

For a different open-source distributed filesystem, consider MooseFS: its free Community plan has a single active master and single-parity erasure coding. SeaweedFS is another option, with a free Community support plan for any cluster size and support through GitHub issues, discussions, and public documentation without a guaranteed response time.

Hadoop Distributed File System is a free, self-hosted Apache-licensed cluster option. JuiceFS offers a self-hosted Community Edition with community support via GitHub and Discord. OpenAFS is a free open-source distributed filesystem.

OrangeFS offers downloadable open-source software, while Quobyte has a free edition capped at 150 TB. XtreemFS is a free open-source option under the BSD license.

Verdict

Choose Ceph if your organization needs object, block, and file storage in one distributed system and has the expertise to run it on its own hardware. Its broad interfaces, replication capabilities, and Kubernetes integration are compelling reasons to adopt it. Look elsewhere if you want storage without responsibility for cluster deployment, hardware, and ongoing operations.
