Overview

Khan Academy is a nonprofit learning platform with more than 840 free courses in core K–12 and early-college subjects. It suits students, families, and teachers looking for academic practice and classroom support without a platform fee. Its breadth and free core are compelling, but it is not a route to certificates or degrees.

Personalized coursework is designed to help learners master concepts and fill gaps, while the mobile apps add exercises, synced progress, and offline video downloads. Separate Khanmigo subscriptions add AI tutoring, but those paid options are restricted to eligible U.S. subscribers.

Key features

Coursework and practice

The catalog covers core academic subjects for K–12 and early college. Personalized learning makes it useful for reinforcing instruction or working through missed concepts at an individual pace. There are no completion certificates, so learners who need formal proof of completion should look elsewhere.

Khanmigo and classroom tools

Khanmigo guides learners toward answers across subjects from elementary school through college, favoring supported problem-solving over a conventional answer key. Teacher tools support lesson planning, feedback, summaries of student work, rubrics, and exit tickets. Khan Academy for Teachers combines standards-aligned practice, progress tracking, and AI support; teachers can also import Google Classroom rosters.

Mobile and early learning

The Android and iOS apps, as well as the web platform, support interactive exercises, mastery levels, and synced progress. Offline video downloads make the mobile app more useful where connectivity is intermittent, though the offline feature is specifically for video. Khan Academy Kids is a free, ad-free app for ages 2–8, with interactive books, games, and creative lessons.

Privacy and support

Khan Academy says it uses reasonable organizational and technical safeguards to protect personal information. District plans state that student privacy and security are SOC-audited and FERPA- and COPPA-compliant, and include a VPAT for WCAG 2.1AA. A Help Center and Community Support links provide assistance.

Pricing

Khan Academy uses a freemium model. Its core learning platform is free for independent learners, teachers, and parents, making it the natural starting point for individuals who need coursework and practice rather than paid tutoring or district administration.

Khanmigo Teacher Tools: Free. The free teacher subscription adds planning and classroom supports, but availability depends on educator locale.
Khanmigo Parent Subscription: $4.00 USD per month, billed $4 / month for an individual subscription. It is available only in the United States.
Khanmigo Learner Subscription: $4.00 USD per month, billed $4 / month for an individual subscription. It is available only in the United States.
Enterprise Starter: 10.00 USD per year, billed $10/student/year for 1,000 or fewer student licenses at U.S. schools and districts. This is aimed at smaller school deployments, not individual learners.
Enterprise: custom pricing for more than 1,000 student licenses. It adds administrator reporting and data insights, single sign-on, automated rostering through Clever or ClassLink, and live professional learning and implementation support.

Paid Khanmigo subscriptions require the subscriber to be at least 18, live in the United States, and have a U.S. billing address. That rules out many international families and younger subscribers buying directly, even though the free learning platform serves a broader audience.

Platforms

Khan Academy is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Mobile users get offline video downloads and a scratchpad alongside interactive practice. District plans add Clever or ClassLink rostering and single sign-on, while the core platform supports Google Classroom roster imports.

Who it's for

Students who want free academic practice, parents supporting school-age learners, and educators building lessons or tracking progress are the clearest fit. Khan Academy Kids gives families a separate free option for ages 2–8. Schools with up to 1,000 student licenses can consider Enterprise Starter; larger districts may need Enterprise for its administrative reporting, rostering, and implementation support. Learners seeking credentials, degrees, or paid Khanmigo outside the United States should choose another option.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 840 free courses and personalized practice provide substantial core academic study without a platform fee.
Pro: Mobile apps sync progress and offer offline video downloads, useful for study away from a reliable connection.
Pro: Teacher tools, classroom progress tracking, and roster integrations support both individual educators and district deployments.
Con: The platform offers neither completion certificates nor degree programs, limiting its value for credential-seeking learners.
Con: Paid Khanmigo access is limited to adults in the United States with a U.S. billing address.

Verdict

Khan Academy is a strong choice for learners, families, and teachers who want broad academic practice and classroom support at no cost. Its free catalog, mobile study tools, and separate early-learning app are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need recognized completion credentials or degrees, or if paid Khanmigo must be available outside the United States.
