Overview

Celestia spans planets and moons through star clusters and galaxies, allowing views from different locations in space and at different times. Solar-system positions and movements are calculated in real time, and the rate can be changed to suit the exploration. That makes it a stronger fit for following motion and perspective than for someone who only wants a simple, fixed sky guide.

The planetarium view brings the experience down to a world’s surface: users can land on celestial bodies and see solar-system objects in the sky. Add-ons can expand catalogues with objects, high-resolution textures, 3D models, spacecraft, and fictional objects. This makes the app extensible, though the breadth is most useful to people willing to explore beyond a basic preset catalogue.

Key features

Views across space and time: Move among planets, moons, star clusters, and galaxies from different positions and moments.
Adjustable orbital motion: Change the rate of real-time solar-system motion to observe how positions evolve.
Surface-based planetarium: Land on a celestial world and see solar-system objects from its sky.
Expandable catalogues: Add objects, textures, models, spacecraft, and fictional objects for a broader exploration set.

Pricing

Celestia is free software under the GNU General Public License. Its free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, so there is no paid tier to choose between; the project’s open-source licensing is also relevant to users who value access to source code.

Platforms

Celestia covers Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, but the route differs by platform. Android users can get it through Google Play, a GitHub APK, or alternative markets, whose versions may differ in features. Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, and macOS versions are on the App Store, with a direct GitHub download also offered for macOS. Windows users can choose Microsoft Store or sideload the GitHub version.

The browser edition is a lite version, so it is the option for a quick trial rather than a like-for-like substitute for the other platform versions. Linux users should note that the latest stable release of the original project, version 1.6.4, is listed as source code.

Who it's for

Celestia is a good choice for learners and astronomy enthusiasts who want to visualize orbital change, explore from different vantage points, or extend the catalogue with add-ons. It is less compelling for readers whose priority is a simple sky-identification guide, or who need a full-featured browser experience.

The site says it collects data only for analytic and diagnostic purposes. The project describes Celestia as open source and links to source code for its mobile frontends and original project. For support, the original project points users to its forum or GitHub discussions; frontend and website feedback can go through in-app feedback, GitHub issues, or email.

Pros and cons

Pro: Adjustable real-time orbital motion and views from different places and times make it useful for exploring how celestial positions change.
Pro: Surface navigation and a sky view add a planetarium perspective to its broader 3D exploration.
Pro: Add-ons can expand the catalogue with models, textures, spacecraft, and fictional objects.
Con: The browser version is explicitly a lite edition, so browser users should not expect the full experience.
Con: Linux support is presented as source code for the original project’s stable release, which is a less direct route than an app-store download.
Con: Android releases through alternative markets may differ in features, making the distribution choice consequential.

Alternatives

Astronomy Apps is the broader directory for comparing options. NASA Eyes is a free alternative across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows; choose it if a browser-based experience with an internet connection suits you better. Solar System Scope offers a free online version for desktop browsers with WebGL, making it a browser-focused option. Cosmic Watch has a free tier with sky, Earth, and solar-system views, a sky guide, layers, star names, world clock, and notifications; it is a better fit if those guide and utility features are the priority.

Night Sky, Star Chart, DWARFLAB App, squishyplanet, and BXA are also alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose Celestia if you want a free, open-source way to explore celestial objects across space and time, with adjustable solar-system motion and a surface-level planetarium view. Its strongest reason to choose it is that mix of temporal control and expandable exploration; look elsewhere if you need a full browser edition or a more focused sky guide.
