Overview

Captions covers several stages of short-form video production: it can edit footage, generate a scripted presenter video, translate captions and dub a video in another language. Custom AI actors and voice cloning extend that workflow beyond conventional editing. A maximum resolution of 4K makes it relevant to creators who need higher-resolution exports, while the separate Mirage API gives developers a credit-billed way to generate videos from scripts, image references or actor IDs.

This breadth is useful if one tool needs to handle both source footage and generated presenter content. It is less compelling for someone who only needs basic captions: the free plan limits users to one caption template and basic editing, and includes no AI usage credits.

Key features

Editing and captions

AI Edit applies cuts, captions, music and formatting to uploaded footage. Automatic transcription and more than 100 caption styles give creators room to adapt clips to different visual treatments, while translation into more than 100 languages supports multilingual publishing. These tools make Captions a stronger fit for repurposing existing footage than a generator focused only on creating videos from scratch.

Generated video and dubbing

Prompt to Video turns a script into a talking-head video using built-in actors or an AI Twin. Users can also create custom AI actors and dub videos into more than 30 languages with a cloned version of their voice. That combination is useful for localized presenter content, but AI video and dubbing depend on paid-plan credits rather than the free tier.

API and enterprise controls

The Mirage API supports generation from scripts, image references or actor IDs, with credit-based billing. Mirage says users retain full rights to generated content and that AI-generated actors have no licensing restrictions. Its stated security measures include isolated US-based Google Cloud data centers, encryption, role-based permissions, audit trails and multi-factor authentication; Mirage also says it is SOC 2 compliant with independently audited security and operational controls. Clay is an integration for personalized AI avatar sales and talking-head videos.

Pricing

Captions is freemium. The free plan costs $0.00 USD per free and includes basic editing tools and one caption template, but no AI usage credits. It is a limited way to try basic editing, not a route to testing the platform’s AI generation.

Max: $24.99/mo, billed $24.99/mo, with 500 credits per month, AI Edit styles, AI video creation and digital twins or custom AI actors. This is the entry paid choice for individuals who want both footage editing and generated video.
Frontier: $69.99/mo, billed $69.99/mo, with 1,400 credits per month, customized usage tiers and advanced generative AI models. It suits heavier or more model-sensitive generation needs, at nearly three times Max’s price for less than three times its monthly credits.
Frontier 2x: $139.99/mo, billed $139.99/mo, with 2,800 credits per month, customized usage tiers and advanced generative AI models. It doubles Frontier’s credits at double the price, for higher-volume use.
Frontier 4x: $279.99/mo, billed $279.99/mo, with 5,600 credits per month, customized usage tiers and advanced generative AI models. It offers the largest stated monthly allowance, but is aimed at substantial ongoing generation rather than occasional clips.
Enterprise: custom pricing, with a custom package, custom seat options and dedicated account management. The flexible seats and support make it the plan for organizations that need a managed relationship.

Unused credits can roll over for up to two extra months, with a balance capped at three times the monthly allowance. That cushions uneven production schedules, but does not remove the monthly credit ceiling.

Platforms

Captions is available on Android, iOS and the web, and offers an API. The range covers mobile creators, browser-based workflows and developers building generation into applications. The maximum video resolution is 4K.

Who it's for

Creators making clips from longer footage can use AI Edit, transcription and caption styling in one workflow. Marketers creating ads or listing videos may benefit from scripted presenter videos, custom actors and voice cloning, while developers can use the Mirage API for script- or reference-led generation. Teams that need more seats and direct support have an Enterprise option. Captions is a poorer fit for a budget-conscious user seeking unrestricted AI experimentation: the free plan has no AI credits, and even the entry paid tier caps use at 500 credits per month.

Pros and cons

Pro: Combines footage editing, captioning, translation, dubbing and prompt-based talking-head video, reducing the need to separate those tasks across tools.
Pro: More than 100 caption styles and translation into more than 100 languages support varied presentation and multilingual clips.
Pro: Credit rollover of up to two months, subject to a three-times-monthly-allowance cap, helps users with uneven workloads.
Con: The free plan has no AI usage credits, so the central generation and dubbing capabilities require a paid plan.
Con: Max starts at 500 credits per month; users needing more must pay for a higher tier, and the Frontier plans rise to $69.99/mo and above.
Con: The free tier’s single caption template and basic editing tools offer little scope for evaluating the breadth of paid AI features.

Alternatives

Choose HeyGen if its free plan’s allowance of up to three videos per month, each up to one minute, better suits a small amount of presenter-video creation.

Krikey AI is an alternative with a free plan of 20 one-time credits and a Pro plan at $15.00 USD per month with 165 monthly credits.

AKOOL is another freemium option, with web, Windows and macOS platforms and a Starter plan shown at $0 per seat per month under its yearly selector.

Consider Atlabs AI UGC Avatar Video for a free trial that allows one video up to 25 seconds, or its Lite plan at $19.00 USD per month, billed at $15/mo annually for $180.

Genies Avatar SDK is free for developers and end users, including commercial projects, and is an option for Unity-based avatar work.

Hedra offers a Basic plan at $20.00 USD per month with 2,000 monthly credits, slower generations and commercial use, making it an alternative for users weighing a stated monthly credit allotment.

Synthesia has a free Basic plan with 1,200 credits per month, 10 minutes of video per month and 25 AI-generated video assets per month.

Tavus is an API-only alternative whose free plan includes 15 minutes of voice and video calls and support for more than 30 languages.

Verdict

Captions is a strong choice for creators and marketers who want one platform for editing footage, producing AI presenter videos and localizing clips with captions or dubbed voice. Its range and rollover policy are useful, but the free tier cannot demonstrate AI generation and the paid plans impose credit limits. Choose it when that combined workflow matters; look elsewhere if you need a genuinely useful free AI allowance or only want straightforward video editing.
