Overview

Editsub is a web-based subtitle editor and management tool for working with existing files as well as creating captions from audio or video. It is best suited to editors who want timing, translation and shared projects in one workspace, provided their subtitle uploads fit the 10 MB limit.

Its wide media-format support and free short transcription make it approachable for occasional projects. Credit requirements for longer transcription and translation, however, make recurring AI work a cost to plan for.

Key features

Editing and timing

The editor handles SRT, VTT, SBV, SUB, ASS and SSA files, and exports SRT and VTT. Frame-accurate timing, batch shifting, waveform synchronization and real-time preview cover both precise cue corrections and changes across a track. The 10 MB subtitle-file cap may be restrictive for larger projects, even though the separate video-to-subtitle workflow accepts media up to 3072 MB.

Transcription and translation

Editsub accepts MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, AAC, FLAC, OPUS, WEBM, MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, M4V and WMV for video-to-subtitle work. Local audio or video up to 10 minutes can be transcribed free without an account; longer transcription and translation require credits. AI translation covers more than 100 languages, making the tool useful for multilingual workflows, but the free transcription allowance does not remove the cost of sustained use.

AI co-pilot and collaboration

The co-pilot flags reading-speed, timing, overlap, gap, line-length and transcription issues, and can fix or rewrite cues. That gives editors a way to address common problems, while retaining the need to review edits for accuracy. Shared project links let multiple users work on the same project simultaneously, a practical advantage for teams coordinating subtitle work.

Privacy and rights

Subtitle files processed in a browser session without an account are not stored on EditSub's servers. Account files are stored securely and accessible only to the user. EditSub says transmissions are encrypted and that it does not share personal information or subtitle content with third parties. Users retain full rights to subtitles they create and may use them personally or commercially.

Bug reports and feature suggestions can be sent through the in-app Feedback button or by email to support.

Pricing

Editsub is freemium. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, is billed monthly, and allows 10 subtitle files. It is a reasonable starting point for occasional file editing, but the file cap and credit requirement for longer transcription or translation limit it as a production option.

Pro costs 4.00 USD per year, billed at $48 per year, and includes 1,500 credits per month—approximately 13 hours of transcription. It is the clearest fit for regular transcription users who need a monthly credit allowance; the annual billing commitment matters for anyone who only needs occasional work. The published starting price is also described as $4/user/mo (annual).

For top-ups, the Starter credit pack is 5.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time pack, for 1,000 credits; the Standard credit pack is 20.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time pack, for 5,000 credits. One-time Starter and Standard packs cost 5.00 USD per once for 1,000 credits and 20.00 USD per once for 5,000 credits, respectively, and those credits never expire. These packs suit users who need credits without a recurring subscription; the monthly-labelled packs are still described as one-time purchases. Check which pack and billing terms apply before buying.

Platforms

Editsub is web-based, with platform support for Linux, macOS and Windows as well as the web. This keeps the editor accessible across desktop systems without narrowing the choice to one operating system.

Who it's for

Choose Editsub if you edit subtitles in several formats, need timing and waveform tools, or want transcription, translation and shared projects alongside file editing. It is less compelling for large subtitle uploads because of the 10 MB cap, or for frequent AI work if credit costs do not fit your budget.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad audio and video input support, including files up to 3072 MB, accommodates varied media workflows.
Pros: Frame-accurate timing, batch shifting, waveform synchronization and real-time preview offer useful control over cue timing.
Pros: A free, no-login transcription option for files up to 10 minutes lowers the barrier to trying caption generation.
Pros: Shared project links support simultaneous work, and users retain commercial rights to subtitles they create.
Cons: Subtitle uploads are capped at 10 MB, which can rule out larger subtitle files.
Cons: Longer transcription and translation require credits, so recurring AI use can add cost beyond the free allowance.
Cons: Pro's $48 annual billing is a larger commitment than the free plan for users with only occasional needs.
