Overview

Campfire brings manuscript work, story planning, and optional publishing into one platform. Its depth is most useful to authors managing intricate fictional worlds or working with collaborators; writers who want a narrower drafting tool may find more here than they need.

Drafting and worldbuilding are closely linked: the Manuscript Module handles chapters and progress, while dedicated modules organize story material. Campfire also supports publishing eBooks and digital bonus content through its store, but does not prevent authors from publishing elsewhere.

Key features

Drafting and organization

The Manuscript Module combines drafting with chapter organization, Index Card View, word-count goals, and writing statistics. The corkboard view and progress measures suit writers who want planning and drafting in the same workflow; the value is less clear for someone who only needs a place to write prose.

Worldbuilding and collaboration

Modules cover characters, cultures, items, locations, philosophies, religions, species, systems, an encyclopedia, magic, maps, research, timelines, arcs, calendars, languages, and relationships. That breadth gives sprawling projects a structured home, though authors with simpler stories may not need so many separate planning areas.

Campfire lets users invite as many collaborators as they want to view, comment on, or edit a project. This flexibility can support shared development without a stated seat cap. Campfire says storage is unlimited across its apps, backs up work using Amazon servers, and keeps projects viewable only to invited people until they are shared or published.

Export and publishing

Manuscripts can be compiled and exported as PDF or EPUB files ready for publication. Campfire’s own publishing supports eBooks and digital bonus content; authors retain ownership and can publish elsewhere simultaneously. Authors monetizing through Campfire connect a Stripe account for royalties and sales analytics, so its store is an option rather than a requirement.

Pricing

Campfire uses a freemium model, with a free plan and a stated paid entry price of $0.50/mo. The listed plans show different terms and scopes, so the entry figure should not be confused with the Standard Monthly plan price.

Try For Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly. It offers limited access to writing and worldbuilding modules and requires no credit card. This is a way to start without paying, but free access is narrower; browser and desktop use enforce free-plan element limits.
Standard Monthly: 19.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes all modules, collaboration, unlimited storage, and PDF and EPUB export. This fits writers who need the full planning set or collaboration and export; it is a substantial step up from limited free access.

The mobile app allows unlimited element creation, but lacks some modules, so it does not remove the free-plan limits on browser and desktop. No seat cap is stated for collaborators.

Platforms

Campfire is available on Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. The Mac and Windows desktop app is free and supports offline writing, making it the practical choice for disconnected sessions. The CF Creators writing app on iOS and Android requires an internet connection and omits some modules, so mobile is better suited to writing on the go than to the full planning workflow.

Who it's for

Campfire is best suited to authors who want drafting, extensive worldbuilding, and collaboration in one place, especially those whose projects benefit from organizing many kinds of story information. It also suits writers who want the option to sell digital work through Campfire while retaining the freedom to publish elsewhere. It is less compelling for writers who need full offline access on mobile or only want a focused manuscript editor.

Pros and cons

Pro: The wide range of dedicated worldbuilding modules can keep complex story material organized alongside manuscript work.
Pro: Unlimited invited collaborators and project storage support shared projects without a stated seat or storage cap.
Pro: PDF and EPUB exports plus optional store publishing give authors more than one route from draft to publication.
Con: Free access is limited on browser and desktop, and the listed Standard Monthly plan costs 19.00 USD per month.
Con: Mobile requires an internet connection and excludes some modules, limiting its usefulness for offline work or complete project management.

Alternatives

For a different balance of writing and planning tools, compare Book Writing Software and Writing Apps. For game-focused reference organization, see Game Wiki Software.

LivingWriter is another freemium option across web, desktop, and mobile; its free plan is limited to one manuscript and 25,000 words, with PDF export.
Novlr offers a free plan for two projects with online syncing, notes and planning, focus mode, writing sprints, and analytics; consider it when those writing-focused tools fit better than Campfire’s broad worldbuilding set.
Plot Factory has a free trial and a Basic plan limited to one story, one universe, and 250-word narrations per day; compare it if those story and universe limits suit your project.
Squibler is web-only and its free plan provides 1,000 AI credits per month and testing of full book and screenplay creation; consider it if that AI-credit model is a closer fit.
Dabble has no free plan but offers a free trial and broad device support, including Linux; its Writer plan is 19.00 USD per month.
bibisco has a free Community Edition with unlimited projects and novel planning and organization tools; consider it for project planning without a listed Community Edition price.
Wavemaker Cards is a free option.
yWriter is a freemium alternative.

Verdict

Choose Campfire if you want manuscript drafting, detailed worldbuilding, and flexible collaboration under one roof, with export and optional digital publishing built in. Look elsewhere if mobile offline writing or a more focused writing workflow matters more than its planning breadth.
