Overview

Markdown formatting appears as you type, without leaving markup in view. That makes structured drafting feel direct, but Calmly Writer is aimed at writing rather than collaboration or elaborate document production. Its strongest case is a quieter workspace with practical tools; its key trade-off is that the most useful features are in the apps, not the browser editor.

Key features

Drafting tools

The apps provide word and character counts, custom writing targets, reading time, a table of contents, comments, and document tabs. Targets and navigation can help writers manage longer work, while comments and tabs keep related material within reach. The browser version is a limited preview and lacks features including writing targets, backups, version history, and PDF export.

Formatting and exports

Calmly Writer imports Word documents and exports to Word, PDF, Markdown, or HTML. Themes, customizable fonts and layout, smart punctuation, type sounds, and an OpenDyslexic mode offer meaningful ways to shape the writing environment. These are useful accommodations and drafting options, not a substitute for a full-featured production suite.

Files and privacy

Desktop and Android apps work offline and keep documents, backups, and previous versions on the device. Users can save files in Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive folders for syncing; Android can also open and save documents in Google Drive or Dropbox. The browser editor saves documents in browser storage, and Calmly Studio says it does not store writing on its servers. That is a clear distinction for users choosing between local app files and quick browser access.

Pricing

Calmly Writer is freemium, with a free online editor and paid apps. Calmly Writer Online costs 0.00 USD per free and provides a limited subset of app features, making it suitable for occasional browser edits rather than feature-dependent writing. The online editor is browser-based, requires no signup, and auto-saves to browser storage.

The Android app is 16.99 USD per month, billed as a single payment with no subscription; the Google Play purchase is also described as 16.99 USD per once. It requires Android 7.0 or later and is a separate purchase from the desktop license. Android has no trial, but paid apps have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The desktop license covers three computers, and Calmly Writer Pro's three-computer license is pay once, with future application updates free, for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Both desktop plan listings have custom pricing. The desktop app has a 14-day trial with all features enabled, which lets prospective buyers evaluate the full app before committing.

Platforms

Calmly Writer supports Android, Linux, macOS, the web, and Windows. Desktop apps are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux; offline editing is supported in the desktop and Android apps. The browser version is not equivalent to those apps, so platform support should not be mistaken for feature parity.

Who it's for

Choose Calmly Writer if you write independently, want Markdown rendered as you type, and value offline documents, backups, or writing targets in an app. It is also a reasonable fit for writers who want adjustable typography or OpenDyslexic mode. Look elsewhere if your work depends on a full online feature set or a broad collaborative document workflow.

Pros and cons

Pro: Offline apps keep documents, backups, and previous versions on the device, which suits writers who want local access and recovery options.
Pro: App-based targets, reading time, counts, and a table of contents support both progress tracking and longer drafts.
Pro: Word import and Word, PDF, Markdown, and HTML export give writers several practical routes into and out of the editor.
Con: The browser editor is a limited preview, omitting app features such as targets, backups, version history, and PDF export.
Con: Android is a separate one-time purchase from desktop, has no trial, and requires Android 7.0 or later.
Con: The desktop license is limited to three computers; writers needing more seats should not assume broader coverage.

Verdict

Calmly Writer is a good choice for independent writers who want a distraction-focused workspace, offline files, and useful drafting tools in desktop or Android apps. Its app/browser divide is the main reason to choose carefully: if you need targets, backups, version history, or PDF export, use an app; if you need a capable browser-first or collaborative document suite, choose another tool.
