Overview

spectrwm is a configurable X11 window manager for people who want control over how windows are arranged without writing configuration in a programming language. Its mix of tiling, floating windows and workspace controls suits users who value a keyboard-centered, compact desktop; it is a poor fit if you need a general-purpose desktop environment rather than a window manager.

Key features

Sane defaults make spectrwm approachable, while configurable tiling, multiple layouts and a resizable master area give users room to shape screen space around their work. The trade-off is that this is still a focused window-management tool: its controls help organize windows, not provide a broader suite of desktop applications.

Workspaces and user-defined regions offer practical ways to keep windows grouped and reposition them. You can move windows between workspaces or within a region, and resize and move floating windows; dragging a tiled window to float is useful when a fixed tile is the wrong fit. Users who want every window managed in a tiled arrangement may prefer not to rely on that flexibility.

Dynamic RandR multi-head support and keyboard or mouse navigation across screens make spectrwm relevant for multi-display setups. A customizable status bar, quick launch menu and user-defined application key bindings help keep common controls close at hand. EWMH support aids compatibility with software that expects those hints, and restarting without losing state is useful when adjusting configuration.

Pricing

spectrwm is free: its sole listed plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is ISC licensed. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh against it. The project points users to its #spectrwm channel on OFTC IRC for feedback and questions.

Platforms

spectrwm is listed for Linux, macOS and Windows, and its purpose is as a window manager for X11. The X11 focus matters more than the broad platform labels: it is best suited to users whose environment supports that window system, not someone looking for a general window arrangement tool for any desktop.

Who it's for

Choose spectrwm if you want a free X11 window manager with tiling layouts, workspace movement and configurable controls, but do not want to learn a programming language just to set it up. Its layout and multi-display options also suit users who want to arrange work across screens. Look elsewhere if X11 is not the environment you need, or if window management is only one part of a broader desktop platform requirement.

Pros and cons

Pros: Configuration does not require a programming language, so users can adjust behavior without taking on a scripting workflow.
Pros: Layouts, a resizable master area, regions and workspaces give users several ways to control window placement.
Pros: RandR multi-head support and navigation by keyboard or mouse support multi-screen use.
Cons: It is specifically a window manager for X11, so it is not a general-purpose desktop environment.
Cons: Users seeking a purely tiled workflow may find floating-window controls unnecessary; spectrwm supports both modes rather than enforcing one.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Window Management Software.

Launchpad is a free option with Linux, web, API and self-hosted platforms, and a plan for open-source projects; consider it if that project-oriented scope fits better.
Amethyst is free macOS tiling window management with configurable layouts, keyboard shortcuts and application floating or tiling rules; choose it for a macOS-specific alternative.
awesome is a free Linux X window manager under GNU GPLv2; consider it if that alternative is a better fit.
bug.n is a free Windows window manager under GPL-3.0; choose it if Windows is your target platform.
DisplayFusion offers a free version after its trial and a Pro Standard license for 34.00 USD per once, billed per machine with a lifetime license; consider it for a freemium alternative.
dwm is a free X window manager for Linux under the MIT/X Consortium license; choose it if that option better suits your needs.
i3 is free and open-source under the BSD license for GNU/Linux and BSD; consider it if those platforms and license are a better match.
Qtile is a free, MIT-licensed Linux desktop window manager and compositor; choose it if you want that combination.

Verdict

spectrwm is a strong fit for users who want free, configurable X11 window management without scripting their configuration. Its most compelling reason to choose it is the combination of tiling layouts, workspace and region controls, and practical floating-window support. Look elsewhere if you need a broader desktop environment or a solution outside an X11-focused setup.
