Overview

Lemon Squeezy brings several parts of digital commerce under one roof: checkout, payments, recurring billing, license keys, downloads, and sales tax collection and remittance. Acting as merchant of record, it says it handles digital sales tax and compliance. That can reduce the number of separate systems a seller must coordinate, particularly for businesses selling internationally.

Merchants can use no-code checkout forms embedded on their site or share checkout links. The platform says its no-code and API payment solutions support more than 20 payment methods and global bank payouts. These options suit both sellers who want a hosted way to take orders and teams building sales flows into a product.

Key features

Subscriptions and payment collection

Subscriptions can run weekly, monthly, or yearly, with support for upgrades, downgrades, cancellations, and free trials. That covers common billing changes without limiting sellers to one recurring schedule. The ability to offer a free trial is useful for subscription businesses, but it should not be confused with a free trial of Lemon Squeezy itself: the service has no product trial.

Licensing and digital delivery

The platform can issue software license keys automatically. It also describes its download links as securely signed and throttled, a practical fit for sellers who need to deliver paid files while limiting how download links are used. Those capabilities make it more relevant to software and digital-product sales than a checkout-only tool.

Fraud controls and integrations

Lemon Squeezy says machine learning and real-time analytics help identify and counter suspicious transactions. It includes fraud protection in the Ecommerce plan, alongside abandoned-cart recovery and reporting. Official integrations include ConvertKit, Mailchimp, and Zapier, offering connections to email marketing and automation tools.

API and support

The REST API supports up to 300 calls per minute. That gives developers a documented interface for building around the service, though the call limit is worth considering for integrations that make frequent requests. The company says its support covers technical questions and business advice, from initial setup through large migrations.

Pricing

Ecommerce

The Ecommerce plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no monthly charge for ecommerce features. Sales incur a 5% + $0.50 per transaction fee. Sales tax collection and remittance, fraud protection, abandoned-cart recovery, and reporting are included. This structure keeps fixed costs down for sellers with few sales, but the fee takes a percentage plus a fixed amount from each transaction, so sellers should weigh it against their order volume and transaction values.

Email marketing

Email marketing is 0.00 USD per free for up to 500 subscribers. Monthly or annual charges are based on subscriber count above that allowance. The free cap makes it a modest starting point for a small audience, but sellers expecting to grow beyond 500 subscribers should account for charges that scale with their list.

Lemon Squeezy has a free plan and no free trial. Recurring payments, sales tax tools, API access, and custom domains are supported. The free Ecommerce plan avoids monthly charges, not sales fees; the email marketing allowance is a separate subscriber limit.

Platforms

Lemon Squeezy is available on the web and through an API. The web option suits sellers managing checkout and commerce without building an integration; the API is relevant to teams connecting the platform to their own software. It is not presented as a native mobile app.

Who it's for

The strongest fit is a startup, software company, or digital creator selling downloads, subscriptions, or licensed software and wanting tax handling and billing tools alongside checkout. Sellers who need recurring billing, automatic license issuance, or signed download links can benefit from combining those functions. It is less compelling for merchants whose priority is minimizing per-transaction costs, since every Ecommerce sale carries a percentage fee and a fixed $0.50 charge.

Pros and cons

Pros: No monthly Ecommerce charge lowers the fixed cost of starting to sell, while the plan includes tax collection and remittance, fraud protection, abandoned-cart recovery, and reporting.
Pros: Subscription changes, trial offers, automatic license keys, and signed download links address needs common to software and digital-product sellers.
Pros: No-code checkout and a REST API give sellers both a direct setup option and a developer route, with support for more than 20 payment methods.
Cons: The 5% + $0.50 fee applies when sales are generated, so transaction costs rise with sales rather than remaining a flat monthly expense.
Cons: Email marketing is free only up to 500 subscribers; the ongoing monthly or annual charge depends on the count above that threshold.
Cons: The API limit of 300 calls per minute may matter to integrations that need to make frequent requests.

Verdict

Lemon Squeezy is a strong choice for software businesses and digital creators who want subscriptions, license delivery, checkout, and merchant-of-record tax handling in one service without a monthly Ecommerce charge. Its main trade-off is the 5% + $0.50 fee on each sale, so sellers who prioritize a lower per-transaction cost should compare alternatives before committing.
