Overview

PayWhirl is subscription billing software for merchants selling memberships, payment plans, and recurring invoices, as well as one-time offers. It suits businesses that need varied billing formats and multiple ways to connect billing to a storefront or custom site. Its range of billing tools is balanced by transaction fees on top of gateway or processor charges.

It supports recurring plans, installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, and manually created subscriptions. Automated charges, invoices, emails, retries, and dunning can reduce routine payment follow-up. Subscribers can manage payment methods, billing details, and subscription changes through a self-service portal, though merchants control which options customers can use.

Reporting spans MRR and ARR, customer lifetime value, churn, a payment calendar, geographic reporting, and growth forecasting. Merchants can connect through embeddable widgets, hosted payment links, API access, webhooks, or custom scripts. PayWhirl lists integrations including Shopify, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Stripe, Square, PayPal, Authorize.Net, Braintree, ShipStation, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and Zapier.

PayWhirl says it supports more than 10 gateways and major credit and debit cards in over 100 currencies, subject to gateway capabilities. It says full card numbers and verification codes are intended to pass directly to payment providers, and that its PCI-related controls reflect its role and system scope. Its data protection addendum describes PayWhirl as processor for merchant subscriber data and says it will not sell that data or use it for unrelated advertising or profiling.

Key features

The combination of payment automation and reporting makes PayWhirl more than a way to collect recurring charges: merchants can track revenue, churn, customer value, and growth alongside scheduled billing. The broad set of offer types is useful when one business needs to handle both ongoing subscriptions and arrangements such as installments or retainers.

The customer portal gives subscribers a way to manage billing without contacting the merchant, but its usefulness depends on the settings the merchant enables. Integration choices accommodate both storefront connections and custom implementations. PayWhirl also lists human help with setup, gateway configuration, subscriber imports, and launch details.

Payment gateway capabilities govern currency and payment options, and PayWhirl's fees do not replace processor charges. Businesses should compare both cost layers before choosing a plan.

Pricing

PayWhirl has a free plan, paid plans from $9/mo, and a 14-day free trial of paid plans with the full application available during the trial. Every plan below also carries gateway or processor fees; transaction fees are additional.

Starter: $0 /mo with a 3.0% transaction fee, plus payment gateway processing fees. This is the no-monthly-charge option for merchants using PayWhirl outside the Shopify-app-specific plans.
Free: $0 /mo with a 3% transaction fee, plus standard payment processor fees; includes the Shopify app. It keeps the monthly cost at zero, but the transaction charge remains.
Pro: $9 /mo with a 2% transaction fee, plus standard payment processor fees; includes the Shopify app. It lowers the transaction rate relative to Free in exchange for a monthly charge.
Traction: $29 /mo with a 1.5% transaction fee, plus standard payment processor fees; includes the Shopify app. It may suit Shopify merchants whose transaction volume makes the lower rate worth the higher fixed cost.
Business Pro: $49 /mo with a 2.0% transaction fee, plus payment gateway processing fees. Its monthly price does not bring a lower transaction rate than the $9 Pro plan, so compare the plans' fit to your setup before upgrading.
Business Plus: $149 /mo with a 1.0% transaction fee, plus payment gateway processing fees. The reduced rate is the main stated distinction to weigh against the higher monthly charge.
Scale: $149 /mo with a 0.75% transaction fee, plus standard payment processor fees; includes the Shopify app. It has a lower stated transaction rate than Business Plus at the same monthly price, but the fee terms differ.
Business Ultimate: $249 /mo with a 0.5% transaction fee, plus payment gateway processing fees. It is the highest-priced fixed-fee option and has the lowest stated transaction rate among these fixed-price plans.
Enterprise: custom pricing for businesses processing more than $5,000,000 per year, with volume discounts and payment gateway processing fees; contact sales. This is the plan for merchants above that annual processing threshold.

The plan details give transaction rates and Shopify-app distinctions, but do not state seat counts or usage quotas. Compare the fee basis and gateway charges against your expected volume rather than treating the monthly price as the full cost.

Platforms

PayWhirl supports web and API access. The service is described for merchants using BigCommerce, custom websites, and a separate Shopify application; integration options include widgets, hosted links, webhooks, and custom scripts.

Who it's for

PayWhirl is a strong fit for merchants who need to combine multiple recurring and one-time offer types, automate payment recovery, and monitor subscription revenue. Its integration range also suits businesses connecting an existing storefront or building a custom website flow. It is less compelling for merchants focused on minimizing transaction costs, since plan charges stack with gateway or processor fees.

Pros and cons

Pros: Supports subscriptions, installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, manual subscriptions, and one-time payments, giving merchants flexibility across offer types.
Pros: Automates invoices, emails, retries, and dunning, while reporting covers recurring revenue, churn, customer value, geography, and forecasts.
Pros: Multiple integration methods and a self-service portal support both custom setups and subscriber account management.
Cons: Transaction fees are charged in addition to gateway or processor fees, so the monthly plan price understates total billing cost.
Cons: Portal actions depend on merchant settings, so subscribers may not be able to make every change themselves.

Verdict

Choose PayWhirl if your business needs flexible subscription and one-time billing, automated payment follow-up, and reporting across several revenue measures. Its integrations and connection methods suit storefront and custom-site merchants alike. Look elsewhere if layered transaction and processor fees are a poor fit for your economics, or if customers need portal controls the merchant may not enable.
