Overview

Elastic Observability is a telemetry platform for engineering and operations teams that need to investigate application and infrastructure behavior across logs, metrics, traces and user experience data. It suits organizations with varied monitoring needs and the capacity to manage usage-based data costs; teams seeking a narrow, fixed-price tool may find it broader and harder to budget for than they need.

Key features

Logs, traces and incident work

Log pipelines, structured parsing, live tailing and archive export cover common stages from collection to retention. ES|QL supports log analysis, while distributed and transaction tracing, dependency mapping, and log and error correlation help teams connect symptoms across services. Alerting, incident investigation, cases and service level objectives extend the product from telemetry review into operational response. That breadth is useful for teams consolidating workflows, though it may be more than a logging-only buyer wants.

Application and infrastructure monitoring

Application performance and infrastructure monitoring sit alongside real user monitoring, interaction tracking, geographic breakdowns, Core Web Vitals and browser checks. These capabilities give teams several ways to examine service behavior from infrastructure through user experience. Mobile app monitoring is not supported, so mobile-focused teams should look elsewhere.

Instrumentation, AI and profiling

OpenTelemetry support includes native data collection without proprietary agents, which suits teams seeking vendor-neutral instrumentation. Elastic also documents zero-configuration anomaly detection, an AI Assistant, AI-powered log parsing with Streams, LLM observability and Universal Profiling. CPU profiling uses stack sampling. The breadth is compelling for teams investigating varied workloads, but the product’s extensive scope makes it less suited to buyers who only need a single specialized capability.

Integrations and deployment

Elastic describes more than 400 out-of-the-box integrations for infrastructure monitoring and over 350 for Serverless. Deployment choices include fully managed Serverless, Hosted and self-managed options; self-managed deployments can run on customer infrastructure. This flexibility suits organizations with different hosting requirements, while self-management shifts responsibility toward the customer. Elastic states a 99.95% monthly uptime service level agreement for Cloud Serverless.

Pricing

Elastic Observability is paid, with custom pricing and a 14-day trial. Serverless charges are usage-based, varying by telemetry type and project tier, with both ingestion and retained data affecting cost. That allows spend to track usage, but teams need to forecast data volumes and retention rather than rely on a simple per-seat price.

Observability Serverless Complete

Custom pricing. Logs and traces ingest starts at $0.09/GB, while metrics ingest starts at $0.023/GB. Retention starts at $0.019/GB/month for logs and traces and $0.005/GB/month for metrics. Egress includes 50 GB free, then costs $0.05/GB transferred per month. Complete is the stronger fit for teams needing the full-stack logs, metrics and traces tier and its broader security controls, including private connectivity and IP filtering. Its multiple usage meters make careful ingestion and retention planning important.

Observability Serverless Logs Essentials

Custom pricing. Ingest starts at $0.07/GB and retention at $0.017/GB/month; egress includes 50 GB free, then costs $0.05/GB transferred per month. Ad hoc log analysis, built-in and custom dashboards, integrations, alerts and notifications make this a more focused option for teams centered on logs. It gives up the broader Complete tier’s full-stack emphasis, so buyers needing metrics and traces as part of that tier should compare the offerings closely.

Limited support is included with a Standard subscription for Serverless. Gold, Platinum and Enterprise support cost 5%, 10% and 15% of consumption, respectively. No seat quota is given for these tiers; the published cost drivers are data usage and retention. A separate $99 /mo paid-from figure is associated with the entry, but no plan terms accompany it, so it is not a reliable basis for estimating a Serverless deployment.

Platforms

Platforms include API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. The combination of hosted and self-managed deployment is useful for teams spanning cloud and customer infrastructure.

Who it's for

Elastic Observability is best suited to engineering and operations teams that want logs, metrics, traces, application performance, infrastructure and user experience monitoring in one platform, particularly when OpenTelemetry support and deployment choice matter. It is less compelling for teams that need only log management, require mobile app monitoring, or need predictable fixed pricing without tracking ingestion and retention.

Pros and cons

Broad telemetry coverage: Logs, metrics, traces and user experience monitoring share a platform, supporting cross-service investigation.
OpenTelemetry collection: Native collection without proprietary agents suits teams seeking vendor-neutral instrumentation.
Flexible deployment: Serverless, Hosted and self-managed options accommodate different infrastructure preferences.
Usage-based cost exposure: Ingestion, retention and egress charges can make budgets harder to forecast than a fixed subscription.
No mobile app monitoring: Teams responsible for mobile app telemetry need another option.
Support adds cost: Gold, Platinum and Enterprise support are charged as a percentage of consumption.

Alternatives

Kubeshark is worth considering when a free Community plan for up to 3 nodes or 60 pods, with unlimited API call capacity, better matches a smaller deployment; it requires internet connectivity and includes community support.

Coroot may suit buyers who want a self-hosted, Apache 2.0 Community Edition with core features, or a Standard plan billed per monitored CPU.

DeepFlow is a free, open-source alternative for teams whose needs align with its support for Linux servers and selected Kubernetes, cloud and container environments.

Odigos is a focused alternative for teams seeking core OpenTelemetry tracing through a free, open-source Apache 2.0 plan.

Qpoint may fit teams monitoring up to 25 endpoints that want agent discovery, attribution and policy enforcement in its Community plan.

groundcover offers a free-forever BYOC plan with 12-hour data retention, suitable for teams able to work within that short retention window.

Inspektor Gadget is a free open-source tools and framework option for Linux environments meeting its Linux 5.10+ with BTF requirement.

Metoro Kubernetes Profiling may suit a small Kubernetes profiling setup: its free Hobby plan covers one cluster, one user, two nodes and 28-day retention.

Verdict

Choose Elastic Observability if your team wants one platform for broad telemetry analysis, incident response and flexible deployment, especially with OpenTelemetry instrumentation. Look elsewhere if mobile monitoring, a narrow specialist tool or a more predictable fixed-price model matters more than that breadth.
