Overview

World Machine is procedural terrain software built around a node graph with more than 100 devices for generating terrain and shaping erosion, rivers, masks, materials and outputs. That breadth gives artists room to build a landscape workflow from connected operations rather than a single generation step. Procedural generation and seed control are useful for repeatable work, and support for both map dimensions adds flexibility.

It exports heightfields, meshes, masks and PBR textures in RAW, EXR, TIFF, PNG, TER, OBJ, glTF and GLB. Compatibility includes Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Blender, Maya and Cinema 4D, so World Machine can serve as a terrain-focused part of a wider 3D pipeline rather than a standalone destination.

Key features

Flow-based and thermal erosion, snow accumulation, river channels, lakes and coastal erosion let artists build weathering and water into terrain formation. This is a strong fit for landscapes where those processes matter; projects that only need a simple heightmap may not benefit enough from the larger toolset to justify a paid plan.

Dragontail Peak adds 3D VDM terrain for overhangs, cliff faces and caves. Those forms extend beyond what conventional heightfields can represent, making the capability useful when a landscape needs more complex geometry. Professional and higher editions add tiled builds for worlds larger than available memory, with interrupted builds able to resume—a practical advantage for large environments, though not a Basic or Indie feature.

Pricing

World Machine is freemium, with no free trial. Basic has the same toolset as Indie, but caps each output asset at 1025×1025 pixels and permits non-commercial use only. It is a useful way to work on smaller personal projects, but the commercial restriction and output ceiling make it unsuitable for production deliverables.

Indie costs 119.00 USD per month, billed with one year of updates included. It allows four build threads and two workstation installs, making it the entry paid option for an individual who can work within those limits. Professional costs 299.00 USD per month, includes one year of updates, supports all CPU cores and permits two workstation installs. Its higher price is most defensible for workloads that can use the additional build capacity or need tiled builds for larger worlds.

Studio Site costs 1999.00 USD per month, includes one year of updates and allows unlimited workstation installs at one specific physical location. That structure is aimed at teams sharing a site license, not individuals or distributed teams. Paid licenses include one year of support and free updates.

Platforms

World Machine supports Linux, macOS and Windows, giving it broader desktop platform coverage than many terrain tools. Its listed engine compatibility includes Unreal Engine, Unity and Godot.

Who it's for

World Machine is best suited to digital artists building landscapes for games, film and visualization, especially when erosion, water shaping, multiple export types or large tiled worlds are part of the work. The Basic edition can serve non-commercial experiments, but commercial users need a paid plan. Anyone seeking only a small, simple map generator may find its extensive terrain workflow unnecessary.

The maker says terrain files and project contents are not collected. Pseudonymous telemetry can be disabled, and crash reports are sent only with the user's choice. Data is transmitted using TLS, infrastructure access controls are used, and telemetry is stored separately from customer and licensing records.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 100 terrain devices and several erosion and water simulations support detailed landscape construction.
Pros: Heightfields, meshes, masks and PBR textures export in a range of standard formats for multiple named 3D tools and engines.
Pros: Professional and higher editions can build tiled worlds beyond memory and resume interrupted builds.
Cons: Basic is limited to non-commercial use and 1025×1025-pixel output assets.
Cons: Indie is limited to four build threads, while even the lowest listed paid plan costs 119.00 USD per month.
Cons: Studio Site is tied to one physical location, limiting its usefulness for teams that need installs across locations.

Alternatives

Gaea is another freemium terrain option: its Community Edition is non-commercial and capped at 1,024 × 1,024 single-build resolution, while Indie is priced at 99.00 USD per month with a one-time price for a perpetual license. Consider it if that edition and licensing structure suit your project better.

Heightmap Level Generator is a free option available on the web, Windows and self-hosted, with no install or account required for its free plan. It is worth considering when access without installation or registration matters more than World Machine’s broader terrain workflow.

Infinity Generation offers free Alpha use with a 1% royalty on annual gross revenue above $100,000, or an Enterprise plan with custom pricing. MapMagic 2 has a free core asset and map generators; its Biomes and Functions add-on costs 45.00 USD once, covers one seat and requires an existing MapMagic 2 installation. Ymir is free GPL-3.0 software for Linux and Windows. 3D Dungeon Generator is a free web creator for dungeon sizes from 16×16 presets to 60×60 custom dimensions, with GLB export. WaveFunctionCollapse is free and runs on Linux, macOS, web and Windows. worldGen is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose World Machine if you need a dedicated procedural terrain workflow with detailed erosion and water tools, varied exports and a path to tiled large-world builds. Its main drawback is the steep step from non-commercial, low-resolution Basic to paid plans starting at 119.00 USD per month; budget-conscious users or those needing only a simple map should look elsewhere.
