Overview

The API supports two-way messaging and routes including 10DLC, short code, toll-free, alphanumeric and global mobile number texting. Bandwidth says these options reach more than 120 countries, giving teams a range of ways to serve domestic and international traffic. That flexibility comes with route-specific costs, so the right option depends on the traffic and message type rather than a single universal rate.

Registration Center can autofill customer and campaign data for Short Code and 10DLC channels; RCS is described as coming soon. Traffic monitoring surfaces unregistered traffic and messages blocked by carriers or Bandwidth, and can send alerts by email or webhook. These tools help teams spot problems, but they do not replace the operational work of investigating and resolving them.

Key features

New accounts default to one outbound message per second for testing, while A2P traffic can go up to the account limit. That is a modest starting rate for validating high-volume workflows; teams should plan production capacity against their account limit rather than assume the testing rate will meet live demand.

When a webhook endpoint fails to return an HTTP 2xx response, Bandwidth retries delivery multiple times over the next 24 hours, then stops. The retry window offers a chance to recover from endpoint outages, but systems that depend on inbound events need their own monitoring and recovery process beyond that window.

Bandwidth says it does not store message text and retains only metadata for queries after webhook delivery succeeds. It encrypts data in transit and at rest using protocols including TLS, SIPS and SRTP, lists SOC 2 Type II compliance, and says eligible services meet HIPAA security requirements. Those are relevant assurances for communications handling, though the HIPAA statement applies only to eligible services.

Developer documentation includes integration guides for ServiceNow, Zendesk and Salesforce, and SDK languages include Node.js, Python, Java, C#, PHP and Ruby. Messaging customers receive Signature support, with optional Premium packages for on-call, ongoing assistance. This gives development and operations teams established integration paths and a support upgrade, while the standard support tier may not suit teams that require ongoing on-call help.

Pricing

Bandwidth uses paid, usage-based pricing, with overall pricing on request and a free trial but no free plan. The published U.S. outbound route prices are:

10DLC SMS: 0.00 USD per once, billed per message.
Short code SMS: 0.01 USD per once, billed per message.
Toll-free SMS: 0.01 USD per once, billed per message.
10DLC MMS: 0.02 USD per once, billed per message.
Short code MMS: 0.02 USD per once, billed per message.
Toll-free MMS: 0.02 USD per once, billed per message.

The 10DLC SMS rate is the lowest listed outbound charge, while short code and toll-free SMS cost more and all three listed MMS routes carry a higher per-message charge. These prices make route and format choice material to budget; teams should seek custom pricing for their expected traffic, since the listed U.S. rates do not establish costs for every destination or messaging option. The trial offers a way to evaluate the service, but the one-message-per-second default testing limit remains a constraint for load validation.

Platforms

The product is available through API and web access. SDK support spans Node.js, Python, Java, C#, PHP and Ruby, while Bandwidth's broader SDK platform coverage also includes iOS, Android and browser environments. This breadth suits teams embedding messaging in varied software stacks, rather than buyers looking for a standalone end-user messaging application.

Who it's for

Bandwidth targets companies that have outgrown a one-size-fits-all provider and need global reach or high throughput. It is strongest for technical teams that can manage route selection, registration, webhook reliability and account-level capacity. Smaller senders seeking a free ongoing tier or a simple flat monthly price should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple SMS and MMS route types, two-way messaging and reach across more than 120 countries give growing teams meaningful deployment options.
Pros: Traffic alerts, registration autofill and CRM or service-desk integration guides support operational oversight and implementation.
Pros: Message text is not stored after successful webhook delivery, and the company cites encryption and compliance measures relevant to sensitive communications.
Cons: Route-specific per-message prices complicate forecasting, and the overall pricing is on request.
Cons: The default testing limit of one message per second is restrictive for high-volume validation.
Cons: Webhook retries end after 24 hours, leaving recovery from longer outages to the customer.
Cons: There is no free plan, and premium on-call assistance requires an optional support package.

Alternatives

For a narrower focus on RCS, compare RCS-Box, which has a free tier of 100 sessions per calendar month and paid plans at 49.00 EUR per month and 249.00 EUR per month. SimplyRCS offers a free pay-as-you-go option with messaging at published rates and a 20.00 USD per month Starter plan; choose it when RCS and its builder or AI conversations matter more than Bandwidth's SMS and MMS route mix. Gupshup is another API and web messaging option with a free plan and a standard 0.001 USD per-message Gupshup fee, with WhatsApp fees billed at actuals. Orbit by Devotel offers a free pay-as-you-go plan with no monthly fee or minimums and two team members included, making it a different option for buyers prioritizing usage-billed AI agents. For carrier-rate-card RCS billing, consider Google RCS for Business; LINK Mobility RCS distinguishes RCS Basic, limited to 160 characters, from RCS Conversation, which uses a 24-hour session. Juphoon RCS.DEV and Monty Mobile RCS Messaging are alternatives for readers comparing RCS messaging providers.

Verdict

Choose Bandwidth Messaging API if your company needs programmable SMS and MMS at scale, with multiple routing options, monitoring and integration support. Its main advantage is control over routes and operations; the main reason to look elsewhere is the combination of custom overall pricing, per-message costs and a slow default testing rate. It is a better fit for established technical teams than for low-volume users seeking a simple free or flat-rate service.
