Overview

Backyard AI is a character-chat platform for fictional conversations, text adventures, and interactive roleplay. It is best suited to writers and roleplayers who want to shape characters or run local models; the free hosted tier is a useful starting point, but its weekly message cap and limited model choice may not suit frequent use.

Key features

The Community Hub offers thousands of characters to explore, and customization tools—lorebooks, an author’s note, grammars, and model parameters—give writers several ways to guide how a character behaves. This makes the platform a stronger fit for building ongoing fictional scenarios than for users who only want an uncustomized chat.

Group chats support up to four characters at once, while voice calls provide a spoken alternative to text. Persistent memory is supported. Together, these options suit roleplay that benefits from multiple characters or continuity, though hosted-model access and limits depend on the subscription tier.

Backyard Cloud subscriptions provide hosted models, with model selection and limits varying by tier. The desktop app offers another route: it runs local models offline and keeps data on the device. That privacy and offline advantage comes with a compatibility constraint—the desktop model guide supports GGUF files, not FP16, GPTQ, or AWQ. Users can also access local models through a mobile browser or iOS app using opt-in tethering.

The plans page says data is protected with industry-standard encryption. The privacy policy says the company does not process sensitive personal information and may process data to provide, improve, and administer its services. Support questions can be sent to the company by email.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 300 messages per week, one included model, and a 16k maximum memory. It is a sensible way to try hosted character chats, but the weekly cap makes it a limited choice for regular use. There is no free trial.

The Desktop App plan costs 0.00 USD per free, is billed 100% free forever, and includes local models and offline use. The listed download is for macOS Intel. It avoids a subscription, but requires compatible local model files and does not provide the same hosted-model access as Backyard Cloud.

Standard costs 12.00 USD per month, billed $12 / month. It includes unlimited messages with every Standard model and a 16,384-token maximum context. This is the entry paid tier for users who want to move beyond the free message allowance while staying within Standard-model access.

Pro costs 35.00 USD per month, billed $35 / month. It includes unlimited messages, Standard and Pro models, and a 100,000-token maximum context. The larger context and broader model selection are aimed at users who need more room for ongoing scenarios; the higher monthly price is harder to justify if Standard models and context are enough.

Platforms

Backyard AI is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web. Native mobile apps are supported, and opt-in tethering enables local-model access from a mobile browser or iOS app. The desktop download identified for the free Desktop App plan is for macOS Intel.

Who it's for

Backyard AI is a good fit for people creating text adventures, interactive stories, and immersive roleplaying experiences, especially those who value character customization or want an offline local-model option. It is less compelling for someone seeking frequent hosted chats without a subscription, or anyone whose preferred local model files are not GGUF.

Pros and cons

Pro: Thousands of Community Hub characters and several customization tools provide both ready-made starting points and ways to shape a story.
Pro: The free desktop app runs local models offline and keeps data on the device, avoiding dependence on a hosted chat for local use.
Pro: Group chats for up to four characters, voice calls, and persistent memory support varied roleplay formats.
Con: The hosted Free plan is capped at 300 messages per week and one included model.
Con: Local model compatibility is limited to GGUF; FP16, GPTQ, and AWQ files are unsupported.
Con: Standard and Pro have materially different model access and maximum context, so users needing Pro models or 100,000 tokens must pay $35.00 USD per month.

Alternatives

For more free cloud messages alongside local LLMs and an LLM API proxy, consider HammerAI: its free plan includes 600 cloud messages per day and an 8,192-token context, compared with Backyard AI’s 300 weekly messages and 16k maximum memory.

Nastia is another freemium character-chat option, with a free plan that includes uncensored chat, daily token limits, and basic companion customization; its Unlimited plan costs 15.99 USD per month.

Choose SillyTavern if a free and open-source option is the priority. CHAI is free to start chatting with AI characters and offers a pay-as-you-use option for Pro subscribers. CrushOn.AI offers unlimited chats on free AI models, 100 monthly credits for Pro models, and 20 daily Inspiration Replies on its free plan. RolePlai includes unlimited AI character chat on its free plan, with ads and standard AI memory and intelligence. Ruby Chat makes AI companions free to chat with and keeps premium features optional. Serene Pub is a free option without accounts, tiers, or a hosted service, though hosted AI provider costs may apply.

Verdict

Choose Backyard AI if customizable fictional characters and the option to run GGUF models locally are central to your roleplay. Its free desktop app and broad character tools are the strongest reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need different local model formats or want a generous free allowance for hosted chats.
