Overview

The free offering includes more than 1,000 learning resources and over 900 self-paced digital courses, with material for fundamental through advanced learners. That breadth makes it practical to begin learning AWS without paying, though the service is centered on AWS rather than a cross-provider curriculum. Learners seeking structured practice or exam preparation will need an Individual subscription.

Subscription courses are available only as part of a subscription. That matters to anyone who expects ongoing access to paid course content after cancelling: the subscription is not simply a one-time course purchase.

Key features

Practice and certification preparation

Individual subscriptions include AWS Builder Labs, game-based learning, AWS Jam challenges and a no-fee sandbox, alongside exam-preparation courses with guided labs and Official Practice Exams. These make the paid plans more useful for learners who want to apply material and prepare for exams, rather than only watch or read course content. AWS Certification exams themselves are not included, and the subscriptions do not include live classroom training.

Digital Classroom and team controls

AWS Digital Classroom courses are included with the annual Individual and Team subscriptions. They offer self-paced digital training based on classroom courses, a useful addition for learners who want that format without relying on live instruction.

Team plans let administrators assign and track training for individuals and groups. Reports cover course enrollment, labs, AWS Cloud Quest, active users and AWS Jam event challenge results. Learners can use company credentials where their organization has SSO integration, with ADFS, Azure AD, Ping and Okta supported. Purchasing organizations also receive a technical account manager for technical support questions. The audience restriction is important: Team seats are only for the purchasing company’s employees and contractors.

Pricing

Skill Builder uses a freemium model, so learners can start with free resources and pay for broader training features:

Free learning resources: 0.00 USD per free, with 1,000+ learning resources. This is the sensible starting point for exploration and self-paced study, but the paid Individual features such as labs and Official Practice Exams are not part of this plan.
Individual monthly subscription: 29.00 USD per month, billed $29 / month. It includes self-paced digital training, exam prep and immersive learning experiences. This fits learners who want practice and exam support without committing to an annual term; it does not include AWS Digital Classroom.
Individual annual subscription: 449.00 USD per year, billed $449 / year. It includes monthly-plan content plus AWS Digital Classroom. Choose it for a year of Individual training with the added classroom-based digital courses; it still excludes live classroom training and AWS Certification exams.
Team subscription: 449.00 USD per year, billed $449/year per seat, for teams of 5 or more. It adds administration, reporting and AWS Digital Classroom, making it the relevant option for organizations coordinating learning. The five-seat minimum and employee-or-contractor restriction make it a poor fit for a small group or external learners.

All paid plans leave live classroom training and AWS Certification exams out of scope. The free plan offers a broad catalog, but paid subscription content is not available outside a subscription.

Platforms

Skill Builder is available on the web. Learners can browse, search and enroll in courses using phones and tablets, but AWS says labs and game-based learning are best experienced on a laptop or workstation. Mobile access is therefore convenient for course discovery and enrollment, not the best choice for the more interactive work.

Who it's for

Choose Skill Builder if AWS is your cloud focus and you want self-paced courses with a route to labs and certification preparation. The free resources serve learners exploring the subject; the Individual plans suit people who want immersive practice or exam prep, and the annual plan adds Digital Classroom. Teams with at least five eligible employees or contractors can benefit from assignment, reporting and SSO options. Look elsewhere if you need included certification exams, live classroom instruction, or training across multiple cloud providers.

Pros and cons

Pros: The 1,000+ free resources and 900+ self-paced courses provide a substantial entry point without a subscription.
Pros: Individual plans combine labs, sandbox practice, AWS Jam and exam preparation, giving learners practical work alongside courses.
Pros: Team reporting, assignment controls and supported company sign-in help organizations coordinate and monitor training.
Cons: Certification exams and live classroom training are excluded, so exam preparation does not cover the exam fee or live instruction.
Cons: Team plans require at least five seats and restrict seats to company employees and contractors.
Cons: Paid subscription courses are tied to the subscription, and interactive labs are best suited to a laptop or workstation rather than mobile use.

Alternatives

For a wider choice, browse Cloud Training Platforms or MOOC Platforms.

KodeKloud offers Android, iOS and web access; consider it if mobile availability is important.
Tutorials Dojo offers an AWS sandbox environment, guided AWS labs and dedicated support.
Digital Cloud Training is another freemium web-based option for AWS learning.

Verdict

AWS Skill Builder is a strong fit for individual learners and organizations committed to AWS: its free catalog lowers the barrier to entry, while paid plans add practical exercises, exam preparation and, at higher commitment, Digital Classroom or team management. Choose another service if you need live instruction, included AWS exams, or a curriculum spanning cloud providers; also weigh the subscription tie to paid courses and the five-seat Team minimum before committing.
